Snow White is a small, 6yr old Bichon Frise dog weighing in at 12.5 pounds. She is totally white incolour, hence her name Snow White. She does have a patch of pink skin on her back at the bottom end of her where she has unfortunately lost her woolly white fur. But despite that she is still a real cutie and slowly becoming a cuddle bug.
Snow White is a retired commercial farm breeding dog. She has lived in a cage most of her life with time spent outdoors in a grassy field. Who knows for sure how many litters of pups she has produced in her lifetime, we don't know but now it's time for her to enjoy her golden years being loved cuddled and pampered. Because of coming from a breeding farm she did not know how to walk on a leash but she is slowly learning how to do that. She scares easily at the noises outside when on her walks and at times she wants to turn around and run back to her safe place at her foster house. She will need someone who is patient and willing to continue working with her and show her that the out doors is not a big scary world when out for a walk on her leash. Snow White requires a quiet and calm setting outdoors, a rural home, small town, or quiet subdivision. She will not do well on a busy street or
urban setting. But she does love her time of being outside and running around in the fenced in back yard that she has at her foster house. She loves to spend time outdoors just soaking up the sunshine and warmth and loves to follow her foster mom all around the backyard, supervising the digging, weeding and watering of the many flower beds that her foster mom has and maintains.
She doesn't really do stairs well. She can easily go up and down the 2-3 steps into and out of the foster house but she doesn't understand how to go up and down the stairs inside the house. She's perfectly content staying on the main floor of her foster house, she's not one to do a lot of exploring inside. She can easily be carried up and down stairs though if needed.
Snow White would do well in any type of housing – apartment, condo, semi detached or detached home. She is a very quiet dog until someone shows up at the door, then she likes to bark to let you know that someone is there and usually once she sees who it is she stops barking but the odd time she will continue to bark for several minutes after. A home with a patch of grass would be her most favourite place to be. For the most part though she is a very quiet dog. The railroad track is close to her foster's house but the noise from it never fazes her. Snow White has been getting two walks per day on her leash plus lots of time outside in the backyard off the leash. She is not treat motivated and is still learning to enjoy her walks on the leash. She has a timidity about going through an open door,
she will not go through it when someone is standing there so her foster mom has to walk away from the door before she'll come in or go out (this is for going out into the fenced in backyard). For the front door when we go for her walk the foster mom picks her up, carries her outside and sets her down on the front porch. Whenever Snow White gets picked up she flattens herself out, almost like a pancake. She isn't used to being picked up and carried and is learning.. She gets a treat after each walk but will not accept it from her foster mom's hand, instead she takes it from the couch. This is all totally normal for
puppy mill dogs adjusting to life in a home and that people are kind…it takes time for them to fully settle in, but she has come a long way. Her family will need to be patient with her and also understand that gentle pushes are needed to build her confidence. It would be easy to never take her out for a walk as this is sometimes scary for her…but that would limit her world so much. With every walk she goes on she learns that the world isnt as scary as she thinks, that she is ok, her foster mom has her back, and that there are sights and smells that are so enjoyable.
Snow White loves to laze around on the couch when she's not outside. She discovered the couch a few days after arriving at her foster home and now that is her most favourite spot in the house. She is crate trained and there are no issues with that. She goes into it willingly every evening for bedtimeand during the day whenever no one is home. She is in the crate for over night and anywhere from 1-6 hours during the day. She has had two accidents in the house when she first arrived but since then she does all her business outside. She doesn't know how to let anyone know when she has to go so she just holds it until she gets outside so we have to be proactive and let her out regularly. She routinely gets outside at least 4x/day.
She is not interested in playing with toys or chasing after balls instead she loves to lay on the couch and relax or spend time cuddling with her foster mom. She is definitely a more relaxed, laid back type of dog. Going on car rides is another story. She goes in her crate willingly and doesn't make a sound while travelling but she gets an upset stomach easily and so far has vomited on each car ride she has been on. She just needs more practice with car rides. Grooming will definitely need to be done on a regular basis. She has that wonderfully soft, woolly type hair that does need routine attention.
Snow White lives with two foster feline brothers. They like to sniff one another but otherwise they don't have much interaction with each other. Snow White would be fine in a home where there are cats for sure but as for other dogs she hasn't met too many yet. The few she has met she seems to like, hasn't done any growling or shown any aggression at another dog when out walking. She almost seems indifferent or not really interested in them.
Snow White does not like children and will continue to bark and growl at them when they are in her foster home when she can see them. So a home with adults only or older teens would be best.
Snow White is slowly learning that the outside world isn't such a scary place. She is getting better with her leash walking and able to come in the front door with a human standing in it when she returns from her walks. But she continues to need patience and learning with it. She is also a very shy and timid girl who hasn't had much of a life or freedom outside the breeding farm so she is just loving her naps on the couch where it's soft and warm. She is thriving on the attention she's been given and has finallystarted approaching her foster mom when she wants some cuddles.
Snow White has been spayed and recovered well from that surgery. She is up to date on her all her vaccinations. She has a full dentistry as well. She did well at the vet for her first
visit there. It has been noted that she has a grade 1 heart murmur but it does not require medication at this time. For the most part she is a healthy dog except for that patch of skin where her fur has not grown. She is getting a supplement with her food once a day to help stimulate the hair follicles to grow. She is a fairly good eater, although she won't eat in front of you. She waits until you leave the room and sometimes even the house before she'll eat. Her supper meal often isn't touched until she goes in her crate for the night. She likes her treats after her walks but only when they're on the couchor on the floor and not from someone's hand. All totally typical of mill dogs.
Snow White is definitely a little gem of a girl. She is shy and timid but with time and patience she can be a real sweetheart who loves nothing better than to cuddle on the couch with her human. The first six years of her life were not easy so now it's her turn to relax and enjoy a life with someone who will love her for who she is and be willing to help her navigate life outside of a commercial breeding facility.
