BIRDIE DIDN’T EVEN LET HER FOSTER MOM MEET THE OTHER DOGS.
When Jana came with us to the shelter, the plan was simple: meet several dogs, spend some time with each of them, and decide who she wanted to foster.
The shelter staff had given us a few of their favorites.
Birdie was first.
And apparently Birdie understood the assignment. 😂
The moment she walked into the courtyard, she went straight to Jana, who was sitting on a bench. Birdie pressed her little body against Jana’s legs, wagged her tail, leaned in for pets and basically said, “Hi. It’s me. You can stop looking now.”
And that was that.
Jana never met the other dogs.
Birdie had done her job well.
We don’t know much about Birdie’s first three years of life. We believe she’s a Black Mouth Cur mix, about three years old and a petite 40-ish pounds.
What we do know is that someone left her in the shelter’s night drop.
Nobody came looking for her.
We don’t know the circumstances that led to Birdie being left there, and we hope the people who once loved her are okay. Because Birdie certainly seems like a dog who has known love. She trusts people. She seeks affection. She melts into you when you pet her.
She quickly became a staff favorite at the shelter.
But being wonderful doesn’t always get a dog out of an overcrowded shelter.
So we stepped in.
And the funny thing is, Jana already thought Birdie was pretty special when she chose her. Then she got her home and discovered that Birdie is somehow even better than expected.
She’s house trained. She rides beautifully in the car. She’s doing great on walks. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs. She loves people. She’s affectionate without being demanding, easygoing without being boring, and she has apparently earned an advanced degree in professional snuggling.
Her foster family describes her as a complete delight.
And sometimes those words can sound generic in rescue bios. Every dog is sweet. Every dog is special.
But Birdie really is one of those dogs.
She doesn't need a particularly specific kind of home to thrive. She's calm enough that we could see her being a wonderful companion for a senior. She's gentle and loving enough that we think she could be fabulous in a family with children. She loves other dogs, but she loves her humans just as much, so we think she could be perfectly happy as an only dog, too.
She doesn't currently live with cats or very young children, so we can't make promises, but based on her gentle nature and what we've seen from her, we suspect she'd do beautifully with them as well.
Birdie doesn't need someone to manage a long list of quirks.
She just needs someone who deserves her.
Someone who will never leave her wondering where her people went again. Someone who will let her press herself against their legs for pets, take her along for car rides, make room for her on the couch and give her the security of knowing that this time, she's home for good.
Birdie didn't deserve to end up alone in a night drop.
She didn't deserve to sit in a shelter while being passed over.
And while we're incredibly grateful that she's safe and loved with Jana, a foster home was only supposed to be the bridge.
Now we need to find the person waiting on the other side.
