Story

ZuZu is a lovely 2-1/2 year old female (possible) Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on April 19, 2026 by a Good Samaritan who found her on State Route 555 in the Little Hocking Ohio area. ZuZu was wearing a collar but, unfortunately, there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on her collar .. And she was not microchipped. ZuZu has a white short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful face with hopeful innocent eyes, a black button nose, a square muzzle, and short floppy ears which are sprinkled with black spotting. This sweet girl has a friendly outgoing personality and loves attention. She appears to have had litters of puppies in her lifetime. ZuZu weighed 36 lbs when she entered our shelter and could easily gain several pounds to fill out her slim trim figure. ZuZu is fairly strong on a leash in spite of her size. These photos of ZuZu were taken on the afternoon of April 24th when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Sherrard accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures. ZuZu was such a 'good girl' and looked so cute in her heart-covered pink bandana. She thoroughly enjoyed being the center of attention. ZuZu appears to be housetrained, so someone has surely loved ZuZu and cared about her. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, ZuZu was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that her family would have an opportunity to reclaim her with proof of ownership. Since nobody called or came looking for her, ZuZu can be fostered or fostered-to-adopt with an approved HSOV foster/adoption application. Since she was not reclaimed, ZuZu went home with a foster family on May 12, 2026 who offered her a fabulous temporary home so that she could enjoy the comfort of a nice home environment instead of being in a shelter kennel/floor crate. Her foster family reports that ZuZu is good with children and other dogs (and our HSOV staff/kennel techs feel that ZuZu is also good with cats). ZuZu is still available for adoption. Please complete/submit an HSOV foster/adoption application if you would like to meet ZuZu so that we may arrange a meet-and-greet with ZuZu and her foster family. Note: ZuZu was returned to HSOV by her foster family on May 30, 2026 for a happy reason (to meet a potential adopter). The meet-and-greet went extremely well, and ZuZu went home with another foster family on May 30th 2026 who planned to adopt her after she was spayed. Unfortunately, ZuZu was returned to HSOV by her foster-to-adopt family on June 26th 2026 because she and the resident dog in the home were not compatible with each other .. So her original foster mother took ZuZu back to her home where she is available for foster/adoption with an approved HSOV foster/adoption application. Update: ZuZu was spayed on July 20, 2026 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Story

Henry is a handsome 1-1/2 year old male Boxer/Terrier mix who was surrendered by his family on October 10, 2025. Henry was dearly loved by the family, but he had developed a bad habit of nipping/snapping at their children (and is the reason he was returned ..So we will a bit of Henry's background history with his current Petfinder/Facebook/Adoptapet listing: Henry made his original debut in our shelter when he was brought to the HSOV on July 1, 2024. Henry was an adorable 10-week old puppy at that time. Since there wasn't any location provided as to where he was found, it was unclear whether he was a stray or possibly an owner surrender. Henry had a brown short smooth coat, a long tail, and a cute puppy face with dark brown eyes, black shading on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Henry weighed 7.5 lbs on July 4th when he scampered across the floor scales. This little playboy had a happy, outgoing personality and loved attention more than anything else in the world. Henry had typical puppy behavior and was always looking for mischief to get into during the chewing stage of his young life. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Henry was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Since nobody called or came looking for this baby boy, Henry went home with a foster family on July 24, 2024 who planned to adopt him after he was neutered (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Henry was neutered on October 1, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. He was adopted by his foster family later that afternoon. Henry enjoyed one-year+ in his adoptive home and was very much loved by the family. But when Henry began nipping/snapping at the children, they made the difficult decision to return him so that he could find a more appropriate home. These updated photos of Henry were taken on October 11th 2025 when HSOV Volunteer Hannah MClain and HSOV Shelter Manager Tracy Lynn accompanied him for outdoor pictures. Henry has matured into a magnificent young man. He has a stunning tan short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful chubby Boxer/Terrier face with brown 'teddy bear' eyes, a black button nose, and short semi-erect ears. Henry had not yet stepped on the scales for a weigh-in when these photos were taken, but an estimate would be that he weighs 60 lbs or so. Henry is very strong on a leash. He quickly obeyed the 'sit' command for several of his photos. Henry would likely benefit from some obedience/training classes and perhaps an experienced 'alpha' person to help him reach his full potential. Henry is a good dog who needs a little assistance to become the best dog (smile).

Astro is a handsome 4-1/2 year old male Boxer mix who arrived at HSOV on January 5, 2026 after he was picked up by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden on Barnett Ridge Road in the Fleming Ohio area. Astro was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. This good-looking guy has a dark brown/brindle short smooth coat with a large patch of white on his chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown 'teddy bear' eyes, black shading on his muzzle, and large dark brown floppy ears. Astro was rather shy when he first entered our shelter but within a few days he had warmed up to our HSOV shelter staff and kennel techs when he realized that he was indeed in good hands with folks who already loved him. These preliminary photos of Astro were taken in his large floor crate on January 11th, 2026. Astro weighs 49.2 lbs. He has already been neutered so someone once cared about him to have had that procedure done for Astro. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Astro was held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Surprisingly nobody called or came look for this 'good boy'. Since he is already neutered, Astro could go home with his new family immediately with an approved HSOV adoption application.

**REST IN PEACE SWEET DUKE July 15th 2026** Duke is a handsome 2-year old male Boxer mix who was brought to the HSOV on January 30, 2024 by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff who had picked Duke up (along with his beautiful sister Lucy) on Dana's Run Road in the Newport Ohio area. Duke has a dark brown/black short smooth coat in a brindle pattern, a large white bib on his chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable symmetrically-marked face brindle/white face with beautiful brown eyes, a black button nose, and short floppy ears. These photos were taken on February 3, 2024 when HSOV Kennel Tech Sydney Satow spent time with Duke for his Petfinder/Facebook/Adoptapet photos. Duke weighs approximately 65 lbs and is very strong on a leash. Duke has already been neutered and was given rabies vaccine on February 14, 2023. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Duke was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Neither Duke (nor his sister Lucy) were reclaimed. We've learned that Duke does NOT do well with other dogs (or cats), so he would be looking for a home that he did not have to share with other animals.... with the exception of his sister Lucy with whom he is very bonded. Sad Update: We were heartbroken when Duke began to have some health issues in the summer of 2026 when his belly/stomach was visibly bloated. We hoped against hope that Duke just needed some Drontal wormer treatment and he would be back to his normal self. Duke had an appointment with one of our compassionate local veterinarians who gave us the news that we didn't want to hear. On July 14th Duke was diagnosed with cancer of his spleen which had rapidly progressed to the point that chemotherapy or other options for a cure/submission were not an option. So the difficult decision was made to make arrangements for Duke to be humanely euthanized the following day. One of Duke's favorite volunteers (Brayden Sallee) who had faithfully walked Duke (and his sister Lucy) for the past 2-1/2 years was understandably devastated .. But Brayden put his personal grief/sorrow aside and came to HSOV late in the afternoon on July 14th to give Duke one last walk at the shelter and to give him a nice soothing bath before taking him home to spend their last night together. Duke was pampered, spoiled with gourmet meals, and loved ... And slept in the 'big bed' with Brayden. HSOV shelter staff/kennel techs (both current and past) and volunteers came together to say last good-byes to Duke on July 15th 2026 (and his sister Lucy also had her chance to spent some time with Duke that morning as well).

Story

Punky is a beautiful female Mastiff/Boxer mix who was surrendered by her family on July 15, 2024 (and unfortunately that is not a typographical error on the year 2024 since Punky has been in our shelter for nearly 1-1/2 years). Punky was 3-years old when she came to HSOV and is currently 4-years+ Punky has a brown short smooth coat with a large white bib on her chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable symmetrically-marked face with black shading around her brown soulful 'teddy bear' eyes, a black button nose, a chubby muzzle, and semi-erect ears. Her family told us that Punky had been in their home since she was a 6-week old puppy. Punky is good with her people friends (including children). She is selective about which dogs she included in her circle of friends. Punky is not good with feline friends. When she was in her home, Punky's exercise routine consisted of spending time in the fenced-in yard, but her favorite routine was being a lap dog (smile). When she was frightened, Punky would climb in bed with her people. Punky's favorite pastimes were cuddling on the couch and enjoying stuffed toys. Punky has become a favorite of many of our kennel tech/shelter staff as well as volunteers. Punky has also made some doggy friends at HSOV and especially loves to walk with Spice (a neutered male brindle/white Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier mix) when they each have a kennel tech/volunteer walking them side-by-side on leashes. Punky was spayed on September 29, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine. She weighed 68.2 lbs that day. These updated photos of Punky were taken on October 11, 2025 when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Payton Sherrard spent time with Punky in our outdoor photo area. Punky LOVES to spend time in the green grass, so she chose to 'sit pretty' or leisurely stretch out and simply look adorable in most of her new glamour pictures. Punk displayed her sweet disposition and loved attention (and 'good girl' treats) from her fan club members who were nearby. Punky was recently the first runner-up in an AI-generated Halloween Costume contest which featured several HSOV dogs. Punky was a cute Flower Child/Hippie and donned the costume well .. And she was treated to a special day away from the shelter to celebrate her second-place win in the contest thanks to HSOV Volunteers Alicia Byrd and Matt Carlisle. Punky dreams of winning the "I Found The Best Home Ever" Lottery .. And that someone special will complete/submit an HSOV Adoption (or Foster) Application with her name at the top (smile). Punky's adoption fee has been sponsored~ Punky went home with a foster family on October 30, 2025 who plans to adopt her if all goes well. Unfortunately Punky came back to our shelter on November 4th. Punky was good with the family's older children but was anxious around the infant/baby in her foster home .. And Punky displayed severe separation anxiety issues. So she is looking for a home without young children and with a family who could help her overcome her separation anxiety when left alone. And Punky was still working on her housetraining routine.

Loki (fka Idaho) is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male Pit Bull Terrier mix who originally was in our shelter as a tiny newborn puppy when his mother (Layla) was brought to HSOV on December 17, 2021 along with her four newborn babies (Idaho, Russet, Yam and Yukon). Layla was a good mother to her puppies and she eventually went back home with her family. Her puppies all found homes during the new year (2022). Loki came back to our shelter in the Fall of 2023 and has been readjusting to shelter life for the past several months while enjoying a large 'bachelor apartment' in our Safe Haven facility. He has recently made a move from Safe Haven to a smaller apartment adjacent to the lobby of our shelter .. Loki is usually seen looking through the window when visitors come to our shelter in hopes that special someone will offer him the home that he has been dreaming of for the past six months+ Loki is ready to move on with his life and find an appropriate home of his very own. This magnificent boy has a black-and-white coat, huge paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with blue eyes, a black button nose on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Loki's left ear is white and his right ear is black. Loki is looking for a home where he could be an 'only child' since he is not good with other dogs or cats. He would most likely be ok with older children who would be strong enough to withstand his 'hugs' and robust playtime. Loki is big boy who currently weighs 105 lbs and is very strong on a leash (especially when he jumps). He would probably do best with an experienced handler who could give him the attention and exercise that he loves. Loki is merely an overgrown puppy in a very large body. He is full of playful energy and doesn't know his own strength. This collage of photos were taken on July 2nd 2024 when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash accompanied Loki for outdoor Fourth of July pictures in his festive red/white/blue bandana when Loki was chosen to announce our HSOV Wednesday Wish List for July 3rd. Loki has already been neutered, so he could leave our shelter immediately with an approved HSOV adoption application. And as an added bonus, we can offer BABY PHOTOS of Loki (whose baby name was Idaho since he was such a cute little pudgy potato) UPDATE: Loki went home with a foster family on October 4, 2024 so that he can enjoy a real home environment while he waits for someone to adopt him and give him a forever home. Loki has been slowly introduced to the other dogs in his foster home, and they are getting along well. Loki went home with foster family on October 13, 2024 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Loki was returned to HSOV on December 7, 2024 by his heartbroken foster family. They truly loved Loki but could no longer keep him since he did not get along with one of their resident dogs and had caused bodily injury to her.

Tabatha is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on July 23, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden along with Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) who is most likely her brother. Tabatha has a white short smooth coat with large black patch on her left side and at the base of her long tail. Tabatha has the most adorable face and the nicest 'smile'. She appears to have borrowed an eyebrow pencil to enhance her black eyebrows but didn't have access to a mirror when she applied her makeup (smile). Tabatha has a slender muzzle and short black semi-erect ears. This little lovebug was a pleasure to photograph when HSOV Kennel Tech Cadince Bibbee accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures on July 26, 2024. Tabatha displayed a sweet, cheerful personality and adored attention from Cadince. Tabatha wags her tail the moment you make eye contact with her (and looks up at you with hopeful eyes and her cute smile). Tabatha weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Cadince. Tabatha and Kenny had an unfortunate incident which placed them on a 10-day bite quarantine when they were brought to our shelter. They have 'done their time' and have been great 'guests' in our shelter. Their owner decided to surrender them to our shelter, so they are now looking for a new home. Tabatha will be spayed before being adopted by her new family (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Update: Tabatha was spayed on December 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. She is ready to find her dream home with someone as special as she truly is. Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) has been neutered and is also still in our shelter and is looking for a fabulous home.
