Betty is a beautiful 3-1/2 year old female American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on August 2, 2023 by a Good Samaritan who found her on Brandy Drive in Marietta Ohio. Betty was accompanied by her best friend Veronica who is most likely her sister. Neither Betty nor Veronica were wearing a collar, and they were not microchipped. Betty has a black short smooth coat with an over-sized white bib on her chest, a long tail, and a pretty face with a narrow white stripe on her forehead, a chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Betty was 'in a family way' when she entered our shelter and is very pregnant. We anticipate that she will be giving birth to several babies in the near future. Her bestie/sister Veronica is the self-appointed mid-wife since she is always as close to Betty as possible. Betty weighs 75 lbs. Thanks to HSOV Volunteer Tracy Moore for taking Betty & Veronica outdoors (together of course) so that they could have updated glamour photos taken on August 11th. We had taken preliminary photos in their kennel a few days after they arrived, and they were snuggled up close to each other on their large blanket-covered kuranda bed. We had late-breaking news soon after we posted Betty's Petfinder 'baby bump' photos on the evening of August 13, 2023 and will include a birth announcement: Betty gave birth to six healthy puppies. All of the babies and momma Betty are doing well ... And "Aunt Veronica" is also doing well. UPDATE: Four of Betty's babies survived but, sadly, two of the puppies passed away during the month of September 2023. Her four remaining puppies (Curie, Einstein, Franklin, and Newton) have thrived and are happy, playful youngsters who will soon be leaving for their new homes. Betty has been separated from her puppies, and she is ready to begin the next chapter of her life. She will be spayed in the near future and will soon be looking for a fabulous home of her very own. Betty was spayed on September 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Spice is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was found on Colegate Drive in Marietta Ohio around 10:30am on the morning of October 31, 2023. Fortunately for Spice, a Good Samaritan was able to persuade him to accompany her to the safety of our shelter and away from the busy road where he was roaming around. Spice was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. Spice has a dark brown/brindle-and-white short smooth coat, a long tail, and a beautiful symmetrically-marked face with dark brown eyes, a dark chocolate nose, and short floppy ears. This big boy was understandably very nervous when he was brought to the HSOV. It broke our hearts to see how scared and terrified he truly was. Our compassionate staff and kennel techs are doing their best to calm his fears and to help him realize he is among friends who care about him. These photos of Spice were taken after hours on the evening of October 31, 2023 when HSOV Executive Director Amy Rogers and HSOV Volunteer/Board Member Tracy Lynn Moore teamed up to spend time with Spice and to accompany him for a short walk in order to begin gaining his trust. Our photographer stayed a safe distance away and snapped his pictures 'from afar' so as not to make Spice nervous or feel that he was being pursued. Spice is a friendly boy but tends to be reactive. Spice weighs 55 lbs and has already been neutered. We hope that someone will recognize this boy and help us reunite him with his family. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Spice was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Spice.

Tabatha is a beautiful 4-year old female Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on July 23, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden along with Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) who is most likely her brother. Tabatha has a white short smooth coat with large black patch on her left side and at the base of her long tail. Tabatha has the most adorable face and the nicest 'smile'. She appears to have borrowed an eyebrow pencil to enhance her black eyebrows but didn't have access to a mirror when she applied her makeup (smile). Tabatha has a slender muzzle and short black semi-erect ears. This little lovebug was a pleasure to photograph when HSOV Kennel Tech Cadince Bibbee accompanied her for outdoor glamour pictures on July 26, 2024. Tabatha displayed a sweet, cheerful personality and adored attention from Cadince. Tabatha wags her tail the moment you make eye contact with her (and looks up at you with hopeful eyes and her cute smile). Tabatha weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Cadince. Tabatha and Kenny had an unfortunate incident which placed them on a 10-day bite quarantine when they were brought to our shelter. They have 'done their time' and have been great 'guests' in our shelter. Their owner decided to surrender them to our shelter, so they are now looking for a new home. Tabatha will be spayed before being adopted by her new family (a requirement for HSOV adoptions to be finalized). Update: Tabatha was spayed on December 3, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine. She is ready to find her dream home with someone as special as she truly is. Tabatha's male companion (Kenny) has been neutered and is also still in our shelter and is looking for a fabulous home.

Story

Precious is a 2-1/2 year old female American Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on April 9, 2025 and placed in one of our outdoor kennels during the overnight hours. The individual(s) who left her there did not leave any information about her (or call the Washington County Ohio Sheriff's Department), so we don't know if she was an owner surrender or a stray. Precious was covered in fleas when we found her, so she immediately was given a nice soothing bath and received Nexguard treatment. She also had sparse hair (most likely due to a severe allergy or demodectic/non-contagious mange). Precious was a healthy weight (62 lbs) when she arrived on April 9th We posted a preliminary photo of Precious on our HSOV Facebook pages in hopes that someone would recognize her, but nobody called or came looking for her. Precious has a brown-and-white coat, a long tail, and a beautiful symmetrically-marked face with dark brown eyes, a liver-colored nose, and short floppy ears. These updated pictures of Precious were taken on May 8, 2025 when HSOV Volunteer Jennie Sherrard spent time with Precious during her photo session for her Petfinder/Facebook/Adoptapet debut. As with many dogs, Precious does not have a good 'kennel presence' (and is quite vocal) but when she is out of her floor crate/kennel she is a completely different dog. Precious loved attention from Jennie and our photographer while she posed for her first 'glamour photos'. Precious' fur is beginning to grow back in and she looks like a different girl than the one we first met on April 9th. We will plan on another photo session in a few weeks to show her progress, and we hope that potential adopters can envision her future appearance. It was touching to see Precious watching another dog being fostered-to-adopt and hopping it her new owner's car .. It was as if Precious were envisioning the day that this could be her going to a home of her very own. Precious will be spayed before she is officially adopted. She could be fostered while she awaits her spay procedure with an approved HSOV adoption/foster application.

These updated photos of Spice were taken on March 25, 2024 when HSOV Kennel Tech Hannah McClain spent quality time with him on a bright sunny afternoon. Spice casually meandered around our photo area but always stayed close to Hannah and looked to her for moral support, comfort, and security. Spice has a friendly, rather cautious personality and prefers not to rush into a relationship. Hannah wanted to let potential adopters that Spice is a sweet dog who just takes a few minutes to warm up to new people that he doesn't yet know, so please don't judge him based upon his kennel presence. Spice was a pushover for 'good boy' treats' and waited patiently until Hannah told him it was ok to take the small treats .. And then Spice gently took them from Hannah's hand. Spice weighs 55 lbs and has already been neutered. We kept hoping that someone would recognize Spice and help us reunite him with his family, but that happy reunion has not taken place. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Spice was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Sadly, nobody called or came looking for Spice. Loki (fka Idaho) is a handsome 2-1/2 year old male Pit Bull Terrier mix who originally was in our shelter as a tiny newborn puppy when his mother (Layla) was brought to HSOV on December 17, 2021 along with her four newborn babies (Idaho, Russet, Yam and Yukon). Layla was a good mother to her puppies and she eventually went back home with her family. Her puppies all found homes during the new year (2022). Loki came back to our shelter in the Fall of 2023 and has been readjusting to shelter life for the past several months while enjoying a large 'bachelor apartment' in our Safe Haven facility. He has recently made a move from Safe Haven to a smaller apartment adjacent to the lobby of our shelter .. Loki is usually seen looking through the window when visitors come to our shelter in hopes that special someone will offer him the home that he has been dreaming of for the past six months+ Loki is ready to move on with his life and find an appropriate home of his very own. This magnificent boy has a black-and-white coat, huge paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with blue eyes, a black button nose on his chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears. Loki's left ear is white and his right ear is black. Loki is looking for a home where he could be an 'only child' since he is not good with other dogs or cats. He would most likely be ok with older children who would be strong enough to withstand his 'hugs' and robust playtime. Loki is big boy who currently weighs 105 lbs and is very strong on a leash (especially when he jumps). He would probably do best with an experienced handler who could give him the attention and exercise that he loves. Loki is merely an overgrown puppy in a very large body. He is full of playful energy and doesn't know his own strength. This collage of photos were taken on July 2nd 2024 when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Jared Nash accompanied Loki for outdoor Fourth of July pictures in his festive red/white/blue bandana when Loki was chosen to announce our HSOV Wednesday Wish List for July 3rd. Loki has already been neutered, so he could leave our shelter immediately with an approved HSOV adoption application. And as an added bonus, we can offer BABY PHOTOS of Loki (whose baby name was Idaho since he was such a cute little pudgy potato) UPDATE: Loki went home with a foster family on October 4, 2024 so that he can enjoy a real home environment while he waits for someone to adopt him and give him a forever home. Loki has been slowly introduced to the other dogs in his foster home, and they are getting along well. Loki went home with foster family on October 13, 2024 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Loki was returned to HSOV on December 7, 2024 by his heartbroken foster family. They truly loved Loki but could no longer keep him since he did not get along with one of their resident dogs and had caused bodily injury to her.

Sophie is a beautiful 2-year old female Boxer mix who was brought to the HSOV on October 7, 2025 by a Marietta Ohio City Police Officer who had picked her up in the 400 block on Eighth Street in Marietta Ohio. Sophie was wearing a collar but there was neither an id tag or license tag on her collar .. And she was not microchipped. Sophie has a dark brown/brindle-and-white short smooth coat, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, a splash of white on her muzzle, a narrow white stripe on her forehead, and large floppy ears. This little sweetheart has a friendly disposition and an affectionate personality. Sophie weighs 58 lbs and walks fairly well on a leash. These photos were taken late in the afternoon on October 18th when HSOV Lead Canine Kennel Tech Emily Beaver accompanied Sophie for outdoor glamour pictures. The sky was beginning to cloud over in anticipation of an impending rain storm, so the lighting was not conducive to showing off the true color of Sophie's gorgeous brindle coat .. We will take more flattering photos of Sophie if she is not reclaimed, but we really really hope that Sophie's family will see her photos on our Facebook pages and know that she is safely in our shelter. Sophie misses her very own house/family and would love to go back home again.

Bolt is an adorable 3-year old male Boxer/Labrador Retriever (??) mix who was brought to the HSOV late in the afternoon on August 19, 2024 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who had picked him up in the vicinity of the Kiwanis Club (Gilman Avenue in Marietta Ohio). Bolt was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. This good-looking guy has a snow white coat, a patch of brown at the base of his long tail, and a beautiful face with soulful brown eyes, a black button nose on his cute long muzzle, and extra-large floppy ears. Bolt has a super sweet disposition and happy, outgoing 'Type A' personality. Bolt adored being the center of attention when we took preliminary photos in the shelter lobby shortly after his arrival. This little sweetheart was a pushover for attention when HSOV Executive Director Amy Rogers spent time with him (and HSOV Kennel Tech Rachel Elizabeth offered him 'good boy' treats). Bolt appeared to have been accustomed to spending leisure time on a comfy sofa since he was quick to take the initiative to sit on HSOV Volunteer Wendy Jo Irvin's lap. Bolt is a wanna-be lap dog. Bolt weighs 31.8 lbs and could easily gain a few pounds to fill out his slim trim physique. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Bolt will be held for three days so that his family will have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Note: We've learned that Bolt is NOT good with cats. Bolt went home with a foster family on October 22, 2024 who plans to adopt him after he is neutered. Bolt was neutered by the foster family's veterinarian, and he was officially adopted by his foster family on November 19, 2024. Update: Bolt was picked up near the Washington Street Bridge in Marietta Ohio on April 11, 2025 by the Marietta Police Department and brought to HSOV. Fortunately Bolt had a microchip, and we were able to contact his adopted family and he was placed on a 14-day hold for them. Sadly, his family decided to surrender him back to our shelter instead of reclaiming him .. So Bolt is looking for a new family who will love/cherish him forever and ever. He is such a good boy!! Bolt weighed 52 lbs when he entered the shelter on April 11, 2025. Bolt went home with a foster family on May 27, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Unfortunately Bolt was returned by his foster family on May 28th 2025. Update: Bolt went home with a foster family on July 27, 2025 who offered him the hospitality of a real home environment while he waits for his forever home (so that he doesn't have to be in a shelter kennel).
