There is a secret in this house and everyone is keeping it. Everest has three legs. Everest believes she has four. Nobody has had the heart to correct her, and at this point it feels too late to bring it up, so we have all silently agreed to let her live in her beautiful lie. She is thirty pounds of white fluff with one ear that flops the wrong way and a chin she likes to park on the edge of her bed while she watches you make dinner. She is not begging. She is supervising. There is a difference and she would like it noted. Everest is the quiet smart one. Not the dog who barks at the door, the dog who watches the door, learns the door, and then figures out which specific footstep on the walkway means someone she likes. She studies things. Give her a new toy and she will carry it to a private corner, turn it over, test it against her back teeth, and render a verdict. Squeaky hedgehog: approved. Rope: acceptable. Anything crinkly: five stars, would destroy again. She is a little shy when you first meet. Not scared, just careful. She will hang back, take your measure, and decide in her own time. Sit down on the floor, keep your voice low, and let her come to you. She will. And when she does she will press her whole head into your hand and lean, and you will understand that you have just been chosen and there is no appeals process. The leg is the least interesting thing about her. A car took it. That is the entire story and she has moved on from it more gracefully than most people move on from a bad haircut. She runs. She plays. She does a little bunny hop up onto the couch that she is very proud of. She has never once looked around for the missing piece. Three legs. Zero self pity. One extremely good dog who would like you to keep petting her, please, you stopped.
