Story
Laura (aka Winnie) is a 9 year old Terrier mixed breed who was returned recently due to circumstances beyond her control. Her paper lists her as a Shih Tzu but we feel she's mislabeled - she's approximately 25 pounds. Her former home said she is very well behaved and does great with their kids. She loves to go for walks and play with toys. She sleeps in her dog bed at night and she loves car rides. She had the run of the house when the family would leave and she did well. She is playful, sweet and loving and she'd love to find her forever home soon! To get started in the process of meeting Laura, visit https://azfriends.org/testing/adopt.html to complete an adoption consultation form, and then come by the Adoption Center to meet with one of our adoption counselors. You are welcome to submit an inquiry for more information about this dog, but please note that we strongly encourage potential adopters to come and see us in person and speak with an adoption counselor. We do ask for 24 hours time to respond to an inquiry (48 hours on weekends) and often a dog is adopted before you get a response back. If this dog was not good with other dogs, cats or has a restriction with kids, we will note them in the bio. Because each animal is different, we do always require introductions with resident dogs, dogs that visit frequently, and all family members. We are located at 952 W Melody Avenue in Gilbert. Hours: Tuesday 10a-2p, Wednesday 3p-7p, Thursday 3p-7p, Friday 10a-2p, Saturday 10a-4p. You can also call during our open hours to inquire if an animal has been adopted yet (480-497-8296). Thank you!All animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, licensed (dogs). Cats tested for FELV/FIV. Dogs tested for Heartworm. All animals are available to the first family that is a good match, and if we have more than one animal who is a good match, there will be a lottery for all matches. Note that families must have come in to our adoption center and spoken with an adoption counselor prior to any lottery (when we have lotteries, they usually occur on Saturday mornings).

Meet Burrito Straight from the Yuma Humane Society, Burrito is an 9-10 year old, 19 pound gentleman with fluff, depth, and main character energy. He is slightly round. Slightly seasoned. Slightly wiser than the average bear. And yes. He is entering his middle aged fitness era. The Health Glow Up Burrito has been diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease and a collapsing trachea. Both are manageable with lifelong medication, and he is doing much better now. The rescue will even sponsor half the cost of his medications for the first year. He also has a cataract in one eye and is likely mostly blind on that side. He handles it like a champ. He simply turns his good side toward the action. Iconic behavior. Weight management is part of his long term plan, and he has fully committed. His leash walking is excellent. He is increasing his daily steps and casually considering a senior dog 5K. At his pace. With snack breaks. Personality Profile Burrito does not rush into relationships. He does not leap in with all four paws. He is discerning He might swipe right. But he believes in a moderate pace connection. He can be a little aloof at first, but once he feels safe, his sweetness comes through. He builds rapport one step at a time. When he chooses you, it means something. He is good with dogs of all sizes and carries himself with quiet confidence. Manners and Home Life He walks beautifully on leash. He can also be trusted free roaming in the home. He is doing well with his potty routine. In other words, he has his life together. The Real Burrito Yes, his fluff draws people in. He knows he is cute. But he is working on helping the world see his full self. He is thoughtful. He is steady. He is sweet once you earn it. If you are looking for a mature companion who values connection, consistency, and calm affection, Burrito is ready to build something meaningful. One step at a time.
