Meet Alpha, a super sweet adult neutered male Cairn terrier/small terrier mix! This adorable scruffy boy is currently overweight at about 28 lbs, we are working on getting him to a healthier weight (22-25 lbs would be a better range for him).  When he was originally taken into rescue in east TN, the vet estimated his age at 2-4 years. We now think he may be older than this, although we are unsure of his actual age. He has some stiffness in his rear legs and he hops around a little funny (possibly age related arthritis or an old injury - likely exacerbated by his weight). This doesn't stop him one bit though, he gets around just fine and has no problem with stairs. He loves walks and spending time outside, but he is a lower energy guy and does not require a ton of exercise. Alpha is a friendly boy who loves people! He is happy as can be when he is by your side, he loves to nap on the couch or by your feet and is a wonderful companion. Ear scratches are his favorite! He also loves to play with toys! He generally does well with other dogs, however he can be dog selective. He tends to do best with other lower energy, mellow dogs who give him space. He has been cat tested and does fine with dog savvy cats, he ignores them.  We think Alpha would do best in a calm home with older children 12+ who know to respect a dogs space, or no children.  He is medically up to date, crate trained, and housebroken. Paws Rescue League, Inc is an all-inclusive rescue that does NOT only rescue puppies and young, healthy dogs.  We make a point to also rescue seniors, dogs with special needs, moms, and other “less desirable” dogs, knowing that we will likely incur higher veterinary expenses and that these dogs may take longer to get adopted.  As such, an individual adoption fee is not only reimbursing PRL for expenses directly related to that dog, but it is also helping us to continue our mission of taking in dogs that would otherwise be too much of a financial burden to save. Welcome Boscoe to CCPAL Rescue. Boscoe is a 2-year-old Cairn Terrier mix with maybe Schnauzer. He is a lower energy and a little shy. His teeth are white and clean as his adult teeth haven’t been in too long. He is good on a leash and bigger than the other two at 15 pounds. He has nice long legs so he would be a great walking companion. He is very content being beside someone and doesn’t have to be in your lap. He came from a homeless person that had about 6 dogs. The homeless person had rescued all as strays. A good Samaritan stepped up to help and called CCPAL Rescue. CCPAL took in all the homeless person’s dogs except one she wanted to keep. We will be vaccinating them and spaying them to get them ready for their forever home. This boy is not a shedding dog and is very very affectionate. He would probably look Schnauzer if he had the cut. His coat is a little course and not as soft as the schnauzer coat. He would be fine around kids but I think her best home would be with a home that someone wants a lap dog and a quieter home. He would be a great one or two person dog. He will be great company and will not require too much exercise. A small condo type yard would work for him. He is good in a crate and with other dogs. He is more vocal than his sister Merry. He is currently in Texas and can be adopted locally or we can work with one of the wonderful transporters to get him to Washington, Portland (Oregon), Minnesota, Vermont or all along the East Coast. The adoption fee is a donation to the mission and goes far beyond getting a fully vetted pet.    The rescue’s hard costs alone (excluding transport) for a healthy dog to go through our program typically range between $412 to $859, which includes boarding, food, medications, vaccines, and spay/neuter. For heartworm-positive dogs, hard costs are upwards of $1,368. Additionally, dogs requiring extended boarding, extra training, or extra medical care—such as dental work, vision care, or orthopedic care—can lead to expenses running into the thousands. Also, included in the adoption fee are costs to cover transport up to the Pacific Northwest or East Coast. Transport is a significant additional expense to the rescue.  While adoption fees help cover part of these expenses, we want to emphasize that the rescue does not receive government funding and must fundraise to offset the remaining expense balance which ranges $100-1,000++ per animal on these direct costs.   It doesn’t stop there!
