Story
Joy -  1 year, 20lbs Cairn Terrier Mix, Spayed  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: "Joy has been SO fun to foster. She has incredibly chill energy so far, loves to snuggle on the couch and sleep in bed with you. She’s working on her walks and was scared of our stairs at first but now goes up and down them no problem! She seems submissive and loves to roll over for belly scratches. She also never barks… like ever? She did steal a sandwich off the dining table but has been practicing “down” and starting to understand. Her gorgeous underbite has been getting a lot of attention on the street!" Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Cuddle Bug LevelJoy has been loving snuggling on the couch with us and also sleeps in our beds! But she’ll also just conk out wherever, in the dog bed or the living room floor. Potty TrainedShe’s had a couple accidents in the house but also goes outside in the backyard when prompted. I imagine once she’s settled in somewhere the accidents would stop. Comfy with strangers?Yep -- Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello.Good with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)Yes for all ages -- very gentle, low energy, tolerant, not mouthyI dont have kids at my home but she’s been really gentle with everyone so far including kids she’s met at the park. She doesn’t seem to be mouthy at all and is reallllllly chill around people. Good with Other Dogs?Yes -- Generally good with other dogs but may be picky (scared of big dogs or plays too rough for small dogs, for example)She’s been great with our smaller dog, but doesn’t seem to have interest in playing at all. She did bark/growl at a bigger shiba who had really high puppy chaotic energy. I think she’d do well with a smaller or older dog who matches her energy. Good with Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.)Yes -- Seems to get along with other animals, either tries to play with them or is mostly uninterestedUnsure about a cat but she doesn’t chase birds in the backyard or at the park, but does notice them. Mouthy Behavior? Low – Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in its mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime, doesn’t wreck your stuff -- only chews on appropriate things like dog toys and bones. Leash Manners?Getting the Hang of it – Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in its life but he/she is figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction. Okay in the city?Yes -- Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, they may as well have been born here.We do live in a quieter area of Greenpoint but she went on the train and was fine! Was a little spooked at the trains loudness at arriving but did well. Jumping on People to Say Hi?Medium – Jumps up only on people the dog knows when really excited. Stops with correction. She loves to say hi with a hug!!! Separation Anxiety? Medium – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone.Crate training? Yep/mostly – Seems comfortable in the crate, may whine a little at first but settles pretty quickly. We use the crate when we leave the pup alone and/or at night. Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intakHow this dog ended up with Social Tees: Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. Story
This adorable little guy is Reggie. He is 18-months-old and weighs 14 lb. We think he is a cairn terrier mix with his scruffy fur. Although Reggie is small, he has the confidence of a big dog and a friendly, playful personality to match. Reggie entertains himself with toys and enjoys going for walks or playing in the yard. Reggie can be a little sensitive so we recommend kids 10 and up who will be gentle with him. Reggie likes other dogs but also would be fine as an only dog. Reggie would be happy in an apartment or a house--he will fit in just about anywhere! He is going to make someone a wonderful companion! We don't know what Reggie thinks of cats but can cat-test him if needed. Reggie is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and healthy. His adoption fee is $400. If you would like to meet/adopt Reggie, please complete our online application at https://daws.org/daws-forms or stop by our shelter Wednesday-Sunday between 12 and 6 PM. The DAWS shelter address is 147 Grassy Plain St. Bethel. Email daws@daws.org if you need assistance or have any questions. Reggie can't wait to meet you!
