Story
"Jake" is an approx 5-yo, well-over 100-lb neutered male Caucasian Shepherd mix (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_Shepherd_Dog) who is simply the sweetest, most mellow, gentle giant you'd ever want to meet! Jake is vaccinated and microchipped. I've never been so stumped on a dog's primary breed as I am with Jake. Though the shelter he came from (Merced County animal shelter) listed Jake as a Malamute mix, I'm not sure that's his primary breed. He does have a deep chest, extraordinarily thick coat and short, perky ears like a Malamute. However, he does not have a Malamute's characteristic curled tail, and his sabled coloring is very different from a Malamute. Nonetheless, we have to pick a primary breed to describe Jake, so for now it's Malamute. Jake is surely one of the friendliest dogs you'll ever meet. He not only loves meeting new people, he is immediately affectionate with whoever shows him affection. Though I have not observed Jake with children, I wouldn't hesitate placing him in a home with even toddlers; he is just that gentle. Jake is fantastic with the other dogs at GSRSV's rescue ranch. He loves to chase one of my more active dogs in play, and has never even been close to a fight. I'm sure that Jake would be good w/ small dogs and likely cats as well. Jake is completely housetrained. He alternates between hanging out on the front porch and inside the house (via a dog door). He's not a very active dog; he pretty much lays around most of the day. When I walked Jake at Southside Park in Sacramento after receiving him from the transporter, he did great on leash. (I haven't had him on leash since.) Jake LOVES to go for rides in a vehicle. I haven't seen Jake play with toys nor swim in the pond here. While Jake is healthy in general, his hips are not good. He walks and runs with a somewhat stiff gait, and came to GSRSV's rescue ranch acting like a much older dog--likely due to his overweight condition and the 3 1/2 months he had spent at the Merced County Animal Shelter with little exercise. I immediately put Jake on a crash diet, and let the freedom of 45 acres to romp on and several other dogs to play with work their magic. Jake is way more mobile now than when he first came to GSRSV, but he will never be a long-distance hiker. I give Jake both a high-quality glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement daily, as well as CBD oil. I also give him a two 81 mg safety-coated aspirin daily. I will recommend that his adopter continue with these supplements. It will also be extremely important for whoever adopts Jake to exercise him regularly and often to keep his joints from becoming overly stiff and to minimize his calorie intake, as Jake has a very slow metabolism. Jake LOVES to eat! GRSRV rescued Jake in January 2025. His adoption fee is $250.

Story
We got Zen from the pound when she was a puppy. She is approximately 3 years old now. We are looking for a new home for her because we feel she would be happier in a family where she is the only dog. Zen was food aggressive and would resource guard water and toys as a puppy. We currently have a 5 year old golden retriever as well, which for the most part they get along very with each other. Zen goes for walks, plays in the pool, runs at the park. Overall she is a sweet girl and would do great in an active family that goes on long walks, visits parks, or anything outside. More about her and her personality: - Husky/German Shepherd mix. - Social - Potty Trained. - We’ve spent time training her, she knows: sit, stay, spin, drop it, shake, come, and leave it. - She is kennel trained. She is a great guard dog. She has protected our fruit trees from many critters and always alertive. We’d be more than to answer any questions or give more information about her personality.

Story
Silver came into the rescue with a badly injured rear leg. At his first vet visit it was discovered after imaging that he had actually been shot in the rear leg. Because of silver's young age the vet approximated the wound to have happened when he was around 4 months of age. Unfortunately the bullet fragmented a lot as well as completely destroyed the ability to surgically reconstruct it . In addition to all this the leg was badly infected because the wound was at least 6 months old already and never was cared for.He does use his rear leg to a degree and all the nerves seem to be intact. But he will have a limp for the rest of his life. He is the sweetest boy and loves getting attention and learning new skills.

Story
Onyx has an estimated birthday of 1/15/2025. We are not positive of his breeding. He definitely has Shepard ears and has slight colored spots with German Shepherd coloring. We estmate he will be a large dog approximately 70+ lbs. Onyx is extremely smart. He is very cuddly. I find dogs rescued from the homeless tend to be very cuddly. He is a puppy with lots of puppy energy. He loves toys. He minds really well. He knows basic commands of sit, wait, and sits patiently for release command to eat his meals. He walks really well on a leash. I'm the foster and have been training him to walk on my side. I will be teaching more basic training while he is in foster care. He is kennel trained. Onyx was rescued rescued the day after Easter 4/21/25 with a broken leg. He was a puppy that was owned by a homeless man, but then the man moved into an apartment and couldn't take puppy Onyx so he tied him to a fence post and left him. Luckily for Onyx another homeless woman took him, but she only had him for a month when she was riding her bike and Onyx was on a leash running next to her when is little leg got caught in a spoke. Other homeless witnesses heard Onyx scream and saw his snapped leg. Poor little guy was in a lot of pain. I was notified the next day and I was able to get him from the homeless lady at 9 pm. A trip to the vet and an x-ray verified it was broken so he wore a doing for six weeks. Onyx is very friendly with all people. Loves kids. He is ok with cats that know dogs. He is living in a foster home with foster cats. He should be OK with other dogs at this time he has not been allowed to play with the other foster dogs because of his split he was on mostly rest time for his leg to heal. He sees the other dogs and his kennel is next to the other dogs and is not reactive. He has two weeks of physical therapy which ends 6/20 then he will get time to play with another dog. I'm sure he will love it. He will be a great family dog. Great playmate for another dog. A great walker if you want company on a walk. He had been on kennel rest with the broken leg and would wine if he needed to go potty. We will begin normal potty training as he can use his leg longer through the day. Onyx is fixed, vaccinated and microchipped.
