Story
Meet Mo! A soulful five-and-a-half-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix currently living in Atlanta, GA, whose gentle heart and tricolor coat are just waiting to be cherished in the right peaceful setting. Mo is a sweet snuggler, at 75 pounds, he still believes laps are made for him! While he’s calm and low-energy indoors, Mo bonds deeply once he feels safe, especially with women, and becomes a loyal shadow to his favorite person. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and knows basic commands like sit, stay, and come. His favorite activity? Snuggling close and soaking up affection! He's the kind of dog who makes quiet evenings on the couch feel like the coziest place on Earth. But Mo’s heart beats a little faster in today’s noisy world. Since moving to a busy city apartment, the hustle and bustle have become too much for him. City walks filled with strangers, dogs, and unpredictable sounds leave him anxious and reactive. His ideal home is a calm, structured environment in a quiet rural or suburban area, with a securely fenced yard where he can enjoy the outdoors without overwhelming stimuli. Mo needs to be the only pet in the home. He’s a curious guy with a strong prey drive and unfamiliar animals can stress him out. He’s selective about other dogs and would thrive in a home without cats or frequent visitors. A guardian experienced with anxiety or reactivity in dogs, who uses positive reinforcement and has patience in spades, will help Mo begin to rebuild his confidence. Consistency and gentle companionship are key, and he’d do especially well with someone who works from home or has a predictable routine. While Mo does need ongoing support, he gives back tenfold with his affection, loyalty, and the quiet joy of simply being close to someone who makes him feel safe. He's neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and just needs to avoid poultry due to allergies. He also has mild arthritis in his hind legs, but that doesn’t stop him from curling up beside his favorite human for a good cuddle. Are you the calm, compassionate guardian ready to give Mo the peaceful home he needs? Reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more about bringing this tenderhearted companion into your life!

Story
Looking for a dog who’s part social butterfly, part lovable weirdo? Meet Peter Pan, the 8-year-old, 55lb pup who does jazz hands when he sees other dogs (yes, actual jazz hands). Peter has been charming humans for over three years at the shelter. He’s friendly and social, but it’s the little quirks in how he does everything that make him unforgettable. Rescued in 2022 from an overcrowded shelter where he was skin-and-bones and on the euthanasia list, he’s now thriving, starring on his own beer label at Gulf Stream Brewery, and perfecting his belly rub negotiation skills. His hobbies? Sunbathing like a total diva, rolling in the grass like he’s auditioning for a rom-com, and befriending everyone at the local bar. He’s dog-friendly when properly introduced to other dogs, but not all dogs enjoy his enthusiastic roughhousing. He is very calm in his kennel and well-behaved and he never barks. Pet Pan’s underbite smile could win its own award, but he just needs to win over someone’s heart!Apply to adopt this lovable oddball at AbandonedPetRescue.org Want more of Peter’s adventures? Story
Meet Bucky! A spirited four-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Retriever/American Pitbull Terrier mix currently living in Charlotte, NC, whose essence is a loyal heart wrapped in a strong, cream-colored frame and powered by one very wiggly tail. At 85 pounds of affectionate muscle, Bucky is the kind of companion who’ll stick to you like Velcro—always ready to be your sidekick whether you're tossing a ball in the backyard or cruising around town (car rides are his thing)! He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and knows his commands like a pro—sit, shake, come, leave it—and is constantly on the lookout for his next belly rub or squeaky toy to chase. Bucky is a sweet, goofy, and incredibly smart boy who bonds deeply with his people. He thrives in a calm, structured home where he can be the center of attention. But he’s not for every household—Bucky has a high prey drive and must not be placed in a home with cats or small animals. He also had an altercation with another dog in his foster home and has shown reactivity, especially around pushy or aggressive dogs. Because of this, Bucky needs to be the only pet in the home or, possibly, placed with a calm, giant-breed dog under the guidance of an experienced pet guardian. Despite his challenges, Bucky responds incredibly well to confident leadership and consistent routines. He’s eager to please, especially when rewarded with praise or treats, and he adapts quickly when expectations are clear. He’s friendly with people, including children, and generally does well when meeting new faces! This strong, energetic guy does have a few sensitivities—he’s not a fan of loud noises like hair dryers, and while he can be a bit nervous with nail trims, he’s cooperative when handled by someone he trusts. Bucky does well when left alone for short periods and is always ready to greet you with happy tail wags when you return! He comes with the essentials—crate, bed, leash, toys, and food—and a heart full of love! All he needs is the right guardian to help him continue becoming his best self. Could Bucky be the steady, snuggly companion you’ve been searching for? To learn more or apply to adopt Bucky, reach out to adopt@joyfulpets.com!

Story
Meet Amelie! A sweet and spirited almost eight-year-old Labrador Retriever/Shepherd mix currently in Swannanoa, NC, whose sleek black coat and gentle eyes are just the beginning of her charm. At 40 pounds, she’s the perfect medium-sized companion for a family craving both a loyal shadow and a playful partner. Amelie is the kind of pup who wears her heart on her paw. Deeply affectionate and endlessly loyal, she thrives on cuddles, companionship, and being near her people, literally. She's been lovingly nicknamed “the shadow” because wherever you go, she’ll be trotting right behind, ready to offer a nose nudge or a wagging tail! Her favorite place to be? Curled up close, preferably with a child to adore. She’s grown up with young kids and would happily make herself part of their bedtime stories, pillow forts, and backyard adventures! While she may bark at strangers and get nervous around new faces, Amelie warms up quickly with a little reassurance. Before long, she’s leaning in for pets or climbing into a lap like she’s known you forever! She’s gentle, crate-trained, house-trained, and knows several commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “off.” Thunderstorms and fireworks? Not her favorite. But a cozy couch and a caring voice help her settle right down. Amelie loves the outdoors, especially the smell of mountain air and a wide-open space to run. Her ideal home includes a fenced yard, daily walks, and maybe even a rope toy or two to chase around. She isn’t comfortable with traditional car rides due to extreme car sickness, but she truly enjoys riding in the bed of a pickup truck, where she feels much more at ease. Because of this, we strongly believe she would thrive with a family who has the ability to take her along in their truck and who lives a more settled lifestyle without frequent travel. Amelie takes a daily Vitamin D supplement to manage a minor calcium imbalance, which is easily maintained and very affordable. She’d likely do best as the only pet in the home, where she can soak up all the love she craves, but she has peacefully lived with other dogs before. Amelie is also open to a foster home, so if you're not ready to adopt but still want to make a difference, fostering could be a perfect fit. Story
Meet Nova! A spirited eight-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Retriever currently living in Charlotte, NC, whose essence is a radiant beam of affection wrapped in a glossy black coat and powered by the heart of a puppy. Weighing in at a sturdy 75 pounds, Nova is the kind of companion who lights up at the sight of a familiar face—or even a brand-new one! She’s never met a stranger, only future friends, and she’ll happily shower her people with enthusiastic kisses and tail wags that could rival a metronome! Nova is all about joyful connection. Whether she’s bounding after a squeaky llama toy, proudly showing off her “sit” and “shake,” or curling up after a long walk, she brings warmth and laughter to every moment. She thrives on structure—two good walks a day, consistent mealtimes, and a cozy nighttime routine help her feel at peace. Though she’s a big fan of couch snuggles and belly rubs, she’s also got a mischievous streak when it comes to unattended snacks or curious mulch piles. Supervision and a sturdy crate (with a peanut butter Kong, please!) are her recipe for success when left alone. This lovable lady needs to be the one and only furry friend in the home, as she prefers the solo spotlight when it comes to animal companionship. Nova has had past challenges getting along with other dogs and has a bite history involving two incidents with other canines over the years. She does not show aggression toward people—on the contrary, she absolutely adores them—but she thrives in a pet-free environment where she can feel relaxed and secure as the center of attention. Nova is not just looking for a house—she needs a family. One that understands her need for affection, patience, and structure. She would do wonderfully in a home with older children and active caregivers who can keep her engaged, exercised, and loved. She has a sensitive stomach and sometimes experiences stress when left alone, but with the right care, she blossoms into a deeply loyal and affectionate companion. Nova is fully house-trained, crate-trained, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccinations. If you’ve been hoping for a loyal shadow who will trot beside you on walks and brighten your every day with her loving gaze, Nova may be just the girl for you! Are you ready to welcome Nova into your heart and home, and give this cheerful, kiss-happy pup the spotlight she needs to shine? Contact adopt@joyfulpets.com to learn more!
