It has been a long hard road for Xena warrior princess , but she is ready for the next chapter. Xena is now available for adoption. Please read her bio in full as Xena has a life long medical condition and is not a hospice dog, she is only 2 years old, so please keep in mind you will be responsible for long term medical care and daily medication for hopefully a decade or more 💜 this is a BIG commitment and we will treat her applications as such. Xena is 2 -2.5 years young and weighs just under 7 pounds. Her weight fluctuates between 6 and 7 . Xena has Lupus with outbreaks of pemphigus when she flares up. This is a rare diagnosis and took us and her amazing vet staff a while to figure out. She had to have quite a bit of testing and biopsies. Currently she is on prednisone 2.5 mg daily and is doing really well. She has had no flare ups and is thriving. She has to stay on this daily forever, as soon as you try and go under this dosage she will flare again. Her pemphigus causes sores and pain, discomfort and because they tens to be in and around her mouth and throat, she ends up with a secondary infection then also needing antibiotics. Luckily the prednisone is inexpensive. It is a very tiny pill and she takes it very well in a little treat. Xena loves food as long as she is feeling well. Once her lupus was under control, she has had zero problems and has been doing amazingly well. This does not mean she is always going to do amazingly well or that she will never have another flareup although we truly hope that is the case we cannot guarantee anything of her long-term health or long-term outcomes . Although the prednisone is very inexpensive, her care if she has a flareup is not . So she does need to go to an adopter who is financially capable of taking care of her long-term. Now onto the fun stuff about Xena . For one, she is a beautiful dog. She is very quirky and weird. You can tell she was extremely mistreated in the past or lived mostly outdoors in the past as she came to us acting like a feral little creature and not a dog. I believe now we are about 75% dog and 25% little creature. Her foster calls her the house elf. Xena bonds quickly to her person but is very shy and timid of newcomers. She loves hard. She has mild separation anxiety from her human. This is worse the first day or two in a new environment but she quickly calms down and acclimates to a new place and routine. She is pretty good at going on the per pads. She will go outdoors potty as well but I would not call her “house trained” if there is not a pee pad down she will pee on the floor. She has a funny walk, her spine has a mild curve to it and her front legs hyper extend . She is not in pain, just a genetic mess. She is mostly calm and quiet after the initial decompression time. She LOVES food which is good because sometimes it is hard to keep weight on her when she is not feeling well but the last couple months for her has been great. No issues. She is good with other dogs her speed. Xena has an old soul. She can be a cranky at times with hyper big dogs or hyper puppies , then the little chihuahua comes out. But she likes other dogs, especially older dogs and sweet dogs that lay with her and just kind of enjoy one another’s company without being intrusive. She is sweet with old chihuahuas and her foster has big dogs, and she is bossy with them haha. Once she bonds with you she is a cuddle bug . Adores being geld and kissed and sitting in your lap and wants to be your velcro dog, but this will take a day or two in some cases. She is funny , brings a lot of joy, love and admiration into your life. She is also a bit of a miracle because how she survived is beyond me. She was probably a day or two away from passing when we rescued her. She is a fighter for sure. We are happy to talk to all potential adopters more about her journey and medical care and silly disposition. Apply www.texaschihuahua.org

He is apx 12 years young and 10.5 pounds .He was adopted but returned because he bit the neighbor. Cricket takes a while to warm up to new people, more than a day, maybe more than a week, but he does. He never attacks or bites people out of no where , he is fine with having friends over but he does not like being cornered or picked up by strangers, provoked or pet by people he does not know. He also does not like boy dogs but he loves the ladies and has several girlfriends here at the ranch. He does not like people kissing him in the face even if he does love you he is not a face kisser. Cricket is also heartworm positive and on the slow kill method. He was born in his home, he lived with his elderly human father for 12 full years. He has always been wonderful with me and adores me, since day one. So he is just particular with his people. He loves everyone that works and volunteers at the rescue but some took longer to warm up than others. He is a very sweet and loving gentleman once he warms up to you. He is an easy dog once he warms up, you just have to give him time and space and within a few weeks he will following you everywhere and crawling in your lap for cuddles and sleeping next to you in bed. He had a dental. He had a proheart injection, he loves food, he is not a big barker unless a stranger comes over. He has pretty good potty manners but may mark the first couple days. He is actually a gentle quiet soul that just thinks for some reason he has to make himself larger than life when he is scared or uncertain or nervous. You will fall in love with Cricket. It may not be the first night , but he weasels his way into your heart, you will see. Adoption fee waived for approved adopters

He is apx 8 years old and a chunky stout 13.5 pounds. Chico is a great dog in many ways, however he would have to be the only dog in the home. He is fine with other dogs out and about at walks, dog parks, he is not just going to attack a dog, but he gets very persnickety about sharing his person or his stuff or his space in a home like his “pen” or his bed. If you are petting him or he is on your lap and another dog comes up he will growl and snap at them. He also has a bit of separation anxiety . He hates a crate or pen and wants to be out with his people. Which really is not a problem because he appears fully potty trained and is not destructive. He walks on leash and we have never heard him bark. Chico is great with cats and kids. He would love a hime with home body or retired person that stays home a lot with him. He would make a fabulous companion and lap dog. He is very clean, well behaved and would do fine in a small home space or apartment type dwelling. He will also use wee pads if you put one down and he never misses. He will have some anxiety the first few days in a new environment as he is just so unsure and scared of all the change. We can send him home with some medication to assist with this transition. He will settle in after a bit once he feels safe. Chico gets a dental on June 29th . He was neutered young and squats to pee so no marking. Chico loves all people and is very submissive to people and adores attention. He was an owner surrender to animal shelter so it is understandable he has some trauma he needs to work through. Chico is actually a very good boy aside from the dog aggression, and if he just had someone give him a chance a couple weeks of decompression time, he will be your best friend and most loyal companion.
