Meet Sherwood – the Regal Fluff with a Loyal Heart and a Gentle Soul Looking for a companion with the soul of a lion and the heart of a teddy bear (on their terms)? Sherwood is a classic Chow Chow – dignified, independent, and quietly devoted once you earn his trust. But don’t be fooled by his noble demeanor—he’s also the kind of dog who makes you smile without even trying. With his soulful eyes and calm, curious nature, Sherwood has a quiet charm that sneaks up on you. He’s crate trained, mostly potty trained, walks nicely on a leash (even if he's still figuring out the finer points), and rides well in the car. He settled into his foster home like he’d been there forever—unbothered by the noisy welcome committee of resident pups, he simply followed his foster upstairs and got on with life like a seasoned pro. Sherwood has that perfect energy balance: happy to tag along, but calm and respectful. No jumping, just a little excited dance when he sees you. He hasn’t quite figured out what toys are for yet, but he’s clearly eager to learn. He LOVES food and has impeccable mealtime manners—waiting patiently while the others finish before checking if there’s anything left for him. He’s dog-friendly with the right introductions and thrives in a calm, controlled setting. While he’s respectful and composed—even when barked at by others—he does best with polite canine companions. Pushy little dogs with big macho energy? Not his scene. Like most Chows, Sherwood isn’t the type to gush affection right away. He values his space, builds trust slowly, and forms deep, loyal bonds once you’ve earned your way into his inner circle. He’ll do best with a calm, confident adopter who appreciates that kind of quiet devotion and knows how to honor boundaries while still helping him blossom. We haven’t tested him with kids just yet, but with his gentle, even-tempered nature, we think he’ll do well in the right home. Ideal adopter: Someone patient and dog-savvy who respects a Chow’s unique personality. Bonus points if you’ve got snacks, a peaceful household, and an appreciation for quiet company with just the right amount of sass. Ready to meet your new best friend? Sherwood is waiting. Sherwood is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 6/28/2025 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application.
