*IF THIS LISTING IS STILL POSTED THIS DOG IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. NO NEED TO EMAIL ASKING IF THE DOG IS AVAILABLE. PLEASE READ THROUGH THIS BIO THOROUGHLY AS INFORMATION ON HOW TO APPLY IS CONTAINED IN THIS LISTING** For Adoption: Dierdre! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. This lovely lady is Dierdre. She is a 7yr old Cocker Spaniel and just the sweetest girl. She weighs about 25lbs and is at an ideal weight for her breed and build. Dierdre is a sweet natured, gentle dog looking for a quiet life with lots of outside sniffs and grass to roll in, and most importantly, a lap to sit on and someone to snuggle with. Dierdre came to us from a puppy mill where she had spent her life up to this point being used solely for breeding as many Cockapoo puppies as possible. Once she was past prime breeding age she was discarded but thankfully ended up in our rescue. Amazingly, though treated poorly and heavily neglected prior, Dierdre is a very social dog and absolutely craves human affection and companionship. If there was a photo definition of “Velcro dog” it would be of Dierdre. She is a dog that is happiest when on your lap getting pets. If she can’t be on your lap then she would like to be lying right next to you, touching you…offering little kisses and seeking pets. Dierdre is 100% a lap dog and wishes to spent the majority of her day being a lap dog if possible. When being attached to her person isn’t a possibility Dierdre can be found lying on a dog bed nearby but needs to have her person in her sight. If you leave the room, Dierdre will be right behind you. There is no telling Dierdre that its ok, she can stay, you’re only going to the bathroom…she will follow you. Dierdre wishes to be with her people all of the time. She will require a home where someone is home most of the day; she is definitely not a dog suited to those who work outside of the home all day. Dierdre takes her velcro dog role very seriously and wishes to be at her person’s side always. You won’t find a more dedicated and loyal dog. In fact, often in the yard, we will be looking around wondering, “Where’s Dierdre?” only to look down and see she is right at our feet. If you can’t find Deirdre, look down! We recently had Dierdre at a public meet and greet and she spent the entire time there convincing complete strangers to sit on the floor of a pet store so she could sit on their laps! She isn’t picky about who’s lap she sits on, she just wants to be there and get pets and give kisses. Because of her puppy mill life up until rescue, Dierdre had never been exposed to anything other than the inside of a barn for 7yrs. She is only now learning about the world outside and the world inside of a home. Dierdre is doing so well and she has learned to love being outside, and rolling in the grass and leaves has been one of her favorite things to do. She LOVES a good roll! She is nervous of loud noises or sudden appearances of things. Dierdre is a definite flight risk and must be secured on leash at all times when outside of a very secure fenced area. Dierdre startles easily and will try and bolt. We always have a good grip on her leash and she is walked on a martingale collar for safety to ensure she can’t escape. Her people need to be very aware of her propensity to try and flee from scary things and keep her safe. Inside the home too, sometimes things scare her. Something dropped, the baby gate tipping over, a loud sudden noise on TV, etc, can cause her to startle. She is getting better and better with these things, but we always have to keep in mind that she is a mill dog…she never experienced anything at all prior, and she can’t see well to gauge what scary things are..so we have to give her some leeway with this and just reassure her that all is well. She settles quickly and calms once she realizes that she is safe. Dierdre’s home will need to be a quiet and calm home without a lot of people coming over. A peaceful home environment is needed for her so she can feel safe and not be started by a lot of things happening. She would be fine in a home with children that are of an age where they can be counted on to shut all doors to the outside quickly and not leave them open for Dierdre to run out. She is a gentle and affectionate dog so a home with quieter natured children that want a dog to cuddle and pet rather than romp and wrestle is suited for her. She is not one to play with toys or want to run around. Dierdre is a calm and gentle dog…always one for the cuddles, not so much for rough housing. She requires a home that has easy access to a secure fenced yard. Ideally a yard that is larger and will allow her to roam around and sniff as she loves to do this. When she is outside her nose is always to the ground. She loves to explore and sniff all over! Dierdre would do well being the only dog in the home, but could do just as well with a dog sibling that is calm and mature. Dierdre does not wish to play with other dogs but coexists nicely with them, She is very dog friendly and doesn’t cause any issues with the dogs in her foster home. She enjoys going on walks with them and hanging out with them but is not one to seek out a dog to interact with or lie with. Dierdre is also very good around cats, finding the cats in her foster home very interesting and wanting to smell them, but very appropriate with them. Dierdre is crated when we aren’t home and at night. She is good in the crate at night and will sleep through the night, but she is an early riser and needs to get outside for a potty break right away or she may have an accident in her crate. She is not one for sleeping in so needs an early riser person in her home. You will be greeted with a wiggly tail thumping away in her crate when you go to her crate in the morning. She is generally clean in her crate but care has to be taken that she gets her bathroom duties done before she is crated. Dierdre tho is vocal in her crate during the day if you arent home and won’t be a dog suited to apartment , condo or other attached living arrangements. She just wont be a dog that will do well being crated for a full workday, Dierdre would like to have someone home more than away. Ideally we are looking for a home for Dierdre where someone is home the majority of the day and doesn’t mind a little redheaded sidekick for the days activities. Dierdre has not messed in the home, but we take her out regularly and are proactive about getting her outside for bathroom breaks. She doesn’t know how to let you know she needs to go, you have to take her out. If you don’t take her out and don’t notice her getting anty, then an accident that may happen, but again, with supervision and regular outings she has been very clean in her foster home. Dierdre has come to really enjoy her walks and is doing much better on leash. She is a dog that is still learning to go the way you want and prefers to set her own path based on where the good sniffs are, but she is figuring out the whole going for a walk in the direction the people want to go thing. She needs a quiet and calm outdoor environment as well. Things like bikes, skateboards, kids etc coming fast at her will be very scary for her. She is being fostered in a rural area that is very quiet and she loves this. Her adoptive home will need to be a rural area, or a small town or very quiet subdivision where she can explore on her walks without having things terrify her when she is out. She does ok with some traffic noise as long as it isn’t super loud like the garbage truck, but general traffic noises she is ok with. She is a low energy dog and does well with some casual walks that let her explore and sniff rather than formal walks. She also enjoys yard time to explore and sniff. She is building up her endurance but for now is a dog that is best for short walks at a casual pace, letting her just take in all the smells, and definitely time for some good grass rolls. Dierdre is getting more comfortable in the car and is still getting used to the whole car ride thing. We crate her in the car and she tolerates this decently enough. She needs more short car rides to fun areas, like a remote park to go for sniffs, to learn that car rides can be great! Medically Deirdre has been spayed and had all her core vetting done. She also had an extensive dental and lost 7 teeth. She will probably need to have another dental done in her lifetime, but would be a great candidate for teeth brushing and oral care…for her teeth brushing time will just be cuddle time so she will be all for it. But any mature smaller dog is expected to have a few dentals in their lifetime so her family will need to be prepared for that. Dierdre seems to be a bit hard of hearing. She does hear and it doesn’t affect her at all, she just doesn’t seem to hear quieter things. She came to us with an ear infection and 7yrs of untreated ear infections will have had their toll on her hearing. Dierdre also had some mammary masses removed. She came through her surgeries like a trooper, this is no dainty dog. She is a hardy little dog. Overall Dierdre is very easy to live with. She asks for little; a couple good meals a day, some snacks in between (Dierdre is becoming quite the connoisseur of snacks), a lot of good scratches and petting sessions, a dog bed to call her own to lay on during her many naps, and a good place to safely sniff outside to her hearts content. Her home needs to be a quiet one where she can continue to build confidence and become comfortable with this wide world around her. She is a complete doll and bonds well with her people. She does well with the occasional visitor as long as they are ok with a dog that wants pets and cuddles from them too. I don’t know if we have stressed this enough but Dierdre is an affectionate dog and craves gentle attentions!! She is an easy and quiet dog who brightens our day with her sweetness. Someone is going to be very luck to be able to call Dierdre their dog! *IF THIS LISTING IS STILL POSTED THIS DOG IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. NO NEED TO EMAIL ASKING IF THE DOG IS AVAILABLE. PLEASE READ THROUGH THIS BIO THOROUGHLY AS INFORMATION ON HOW TO APPLY IS CONTAINED IN THIS LISTING** For Adoption: Bashir! Meet Bashir, a 2-year-old red American Cocker Spaniel with a lean, athletic build and a personality as warm as his beautiful russet coat. He weighs 30lbs and is an ideal weight for his frame. He is an active, curious, and charming boy who is just discovering the world around him – including, it turns out, the tantalizing edge of the kitchen counter when something delicious is cooking nearby! Bashir was named after Dr. Julian Bashir from the beloved Star Trek series Deep Space Nine – a character who started as a supporting player but grew into one of the show's most beloved leading men. His foster family is hoping this little guy follows the same trajectory, stepping into his forever home and becoming the undisputed star of the show. Bashir came from a puppy mill, and as a result, has been on quite a learning journey since arriving in his foster home! Some lessons came quickly – he mastered stairs in no time, motivated largely by his determination to keep up with the other dogs in the house. House training took a little more patience, but after his neuter, Bashir has made wonderful progress and has recently begun actively letting his humans know when he needs to go outside – a huge milestone! Where Bashir is still growing is in his confidence with the wider world. True to his Cocker Spaniel nature, he can be hesitant when meeting new people outside of his foster home. His foster family has been working hard to help him find his footing through walks in busy parks, neighbourhood celebrations, and introductions with willing human friends. Bashir has also recently found his voice, and will bark or howl at noises outside the home – something that is very normal for a dog discovering the world for the first time. For these reasons, Bashir would do best in a detached home, where his vocalizing is less likely to impact neighbours. An apartment or condo setting would not be the right fit for him at this stage of his journey. Bashir's forever family will want to continue this socialization work, offering him patience, encouragement, and gentle exposure to new experiences as he continues to build his confidence. Bashir is also discovering the many joys of the great outdoors! He has taken great delight in exploring his foster family's backyard, enthusiastically hunting for squirrels and other backyard invaders, and carefully sniffing along every inch of the fence line – because you never know what treasures might be hiding there! When it comes to walking on leash, Bashir is a work in progress. He is slowly learning that there is, in fact, a human at the other end of the leash – one who would prefer not to be tripped, tangled, or wrapped around a tree! He has a big personality and an even bigger curiosity, and consistent leash training will be an important part of his ongoing journey. As for car travel, Bashir does quite well riding in his crate, however, arriving at the destination can sometimes bring out a little anxiety, and he may need some extra time and encouragement before he is ready to step out and face the world. Patience, gentle persuasion, and a pocket full of treats will go a long way in helping him gain confidence. Bashir would truly benefit from frequent car rides – some leading to grand adventures and some simply for the joy of the ride – helping him to build trust and excitement around travel over time. This playful boy is rapidly blossoming into an adventurous companion who is learning just how fun playtime can be! Lately, he has unlocked the sheer delight of dog toys – alongside a couple of household items he insists count as playthings, such as the stray slipper! He thoroughly enjoys diving into the toy basket to unearth his top pick of the moment, leaving a path of endearing chaos in his wake. After selecting his prize, he will happily shake a rope bone with pure delight or entertain himself with the satisfying crinkle of an empty water bottle. Yet, when handed plush stuffies, he reveals an unexpectedly sweet, tender streak – gently carrying them throughout the home and softly suckling on them for cozy comfort. Mealtimes are another absolute high point in his routine! The moment food is served, he trots excitedly over to his spot, making a crate the perfect dining setup while he settles in. Should he share his home with canine siblings, separate feeding areas will be necessary; his boundary-free enthusiasm for food means he will gladly wander over and sample whatever is inside his housemates' bowls! As mentioned, Bashir would do best in a detached home, where his occasional bouts of singing are least likely to disturb the neighbours! When it comes to canine companionship, Bashir would thrive alongside a confident, easy-going female dog. He is a quick learner and will naturally look to her to set the routine – but his forever family should be aware that Bashir can be a bit of an attention hog! His canine companion will need to be secure and confident in her place within the home, unbothered by Bashir's enthusiasm for the spotlight. He could also be an only dog and get all of the attention, but it should be known that his confidence building to the world around him will be faster and easier for him with a dog to pattern off of. Not to say he can’t manage on his own, it will just take longer. Bashir would also do wonderfully in an active family home with older, teenage or above, children. He has energy to burn and will thrive with a family that can match his enthusiasm and provide him with plenty of activity and mental stimulation. Consistent training will be key to helping Bashir continue to grow and flourish. As is common with Cocker Spaniels, Bashir has the potential to become very deeply attached to his family – and quite possibly, to one person in particular. To support his confidence and independence, his forever family will need to share his care and maintenance tasks equally across all members of the household, and commit to consistent crate training as a tool for building his self-soothing skills and overall sense of security. Ideally, Bashir's forever family will be one with prior Cocker Spaniel experience, as understanding the unique needs and wonderful quirks of the breed will set everyone up for success. He needs a home filled with activity, love, and – equally important – a stable and predictable routine. Bashir is a dog who gives his whole heart to his family, and in return, he thrives when he knows what to expect from his day. After a busy and stimulating day, Bashir loves nothing more than winding down with his people – a quiet evening together and a cozy snuggle on the couch have proven to be the perfect way to ease him into a calm and restful night. He is a dog who will match your energy, keep you active, and then curl up beside you at the end of it all, ready to do it again tomorrow. If you are looking for a dog who will love you fiercely, keep you moving, and seek out your company at every opportunity, then Bashir is your boy. He has so much love to give – he just needs the right family to give it to. Story
Zinnia-American Cocker Spaniel female's Story Meet Zinnia: Your Future Shadow, Cuddle Bug, and Best Friend. If you are looking for a gentle soul who will fill your home with quiet devotion, look no further than Zinnia (lovingly called Zinni). This 6-years-young American Cocker Spaniel has the most soulful eyes that will absolutely melt your heart! Zinni was recently rescued from a commercial breeding facility, where she spent her life as a commercial breeding dog and is now celebrating her "rebirthday" as a beloved indoor dog enjoying all of the comforts of beds and gentle TLC Zinni is learning what it means to be a cherished family pet, and she is embracing her new life with incredible resilience and grace. View Zinnia's full album of photos and videos here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.927363186580975&type=3 Fully Vetted & Ready for Her Forever Home Zinni is completely healthy and ready to go! She has completed all of her vetting, including: Up-to-date vaccinations Bloodwork excellent and heartworm/tick disease tested Negative Heartworm/flea/tick preventatives Microchip implant Spay surgery Full dental surgery Gaining Confidence Every Day Because of her past, Zinni is very shy and timid around new people. However, in just a few short weeks in her foster home, she has been steadily gaining confidence, thanks to having another dog in her foster home who is teaching her how wonderful life can be. She has officially discovered that love, safety, and pampering are wonderful things! Here is a glimpse into her sweet personality: Morning Rituals: When the morning alarm goes off, she happily wags her tail and waits patiently for her morning neck massage. She has even recently trusted her fosters enough to roll over for belly rubs! The Ultimate Cuddle Bug: It took some time, but Zinni is now comfortable jumping up on the sofa to enjoy evening cuddle time while her foster family watches TV. Cozy Bedtime Partner: While she loves the security of her crate and will happily go in and out of it throughout the day for naps, night-time is a different story. She has discovered that jumping up into bed with her foster is the best thing ever, sleeping contently all night. Quiet as a mouse: Zinni has not yet made a single peep! She does not bark or whine, making her a truly peaceful presence. This may change of course as her confidence grows. House-Training Superstar: She was quickly house-trained! She only has occasional accidents inside if she is feeling particularly nervous or stressed. Things We Are Working On: Zinni is trying her best and learning new things every day! Her perfect adopter will need to help her continue working on: Hand-Feeding Confidence: She loves tasty treats, but she is still too timid to take them directly from your hand. For now, she will happily enjoy them if you gently toss them in her direction. Leash Training: Zinni has not yet learned to go for walks on a leash as she is still too timid. It will take her some time to get familiar with the hustle and bustle of the outside world and unfamiliar street noises. She thrives in a fully fenced yard for exploring. Her Ideal Forever Home: Because the big wide world can still be intimidating to her, Zinni is looking for a patient, quiet environment where she can continue to blossom at her own pace. Her ideal home: People Home Often: Because she loves her humans and is still learning to settle into domestic life, she would thrive in a home where people are home often to continue working on her socialization and training. A suitable canine companion: She requires a home with a gentle companion dog. Having a canine sibling for companionship and confidence, to watch and mimic, will continue to help her build confidence and learn how to navigate the world. No Young Children: Due to her timid nature, a home without young children is necessary to keep her environment safe, peaceful and stress-free. Zinni is a nervous flight risk and children coming and going through doors pose a serious escape risk as well Cats: Zinnia is very respectful of cats. Understanding Transitions: Her new family should be prepared to give her grace during her first week or two in a new environment, as stress can cause temporary potty accidents. Watching a resilient dog like Zinni discover the joy of a soft bed, a belly rub, and the gentle touch of a loving hand is the most rewarding experience in the world. She is so ready for her true happily-ever-after. Does Zinni sound like your new best friend?
