Hello everyone, please allow me the pleasure of introducing our wiggle bum, Shelly! Shelly is a stunning female Cocker Spaniel who is 9 years old but you would never guess that. She’s been on a weight loss journey since her rescue and currently weighs about 35lbs. She has gorgeous red and tan colouring with beautiful brown eyes. Although trimmed short, her coat is very soft and her long ears are covered in curls. She has these pancake looking paws which are super cute. Maybe she would be a good swimmer? Her name came easy to us this time. She had a previous vet booklet and her name on the booklet was Shelly. We all liked the name and since she is older we thought it might be better to stick to something she may have known already. Shelly was rescued from a puppy mill and is so happy to be in her retirement phase of life! Without having any previous socialization, she can be anxious with sudden movements and noises. She seems to feel better being approached lower to the ground and slowly. Shelly needs a forever home that understands that she is still learning how to navigate this new world and is willing to give her time to settle in. She enjoys meeting new people but she is stand-offish with adult men, although this is starting to improve. This is not uncommon with dogs who have come from puppy mills so any men in Shelly’s new life need to be patient as she learns to trust. She has more confidence in the company of women, girls and young/teenage boys. Shelly arrived with some of her vetting already completed so she hasn’t been in our home that long. We have only had the pleasure of getting to know her for just over 3weeks. Shelly has been spayed and had a dental cleaning done and has completely healed. As is typical with Cocker Spaniels her ears are a work in progress so she has had them cleaned at the vet and we have done them as well. This kind of maintenance will have to be kept up in her future home and is very normal for Cocker Spaniels. Our vet discovered a very mild 16 grade heart murmur that will simply have to be monitored. Her vaccinations were updated, she was microchipped and she got a clean bill of health. We heard she liked to eat all the other dogs' food in her temporary spot before coming to our home so we’re focusing on healthy food, portion control and exercise to help our girl shed those last extra pounds! Shelly has warmed up as expected in our care and greets her favourite people with a full body tail wiggle. Currently, she is closer with the girls in the house but this should improve. Shelly will continue to warm up to men but it will be very important for new men in her life to understand how to approach her and how to show her patience and support. She has been crate trained and is amazing and calm in the crate. She is crated when the family is out of the house, overnight and for meal time. Most times we can say “in your house” and she will go in on her own, especially if it’s meal time! She has not been destructive so she has a cozy blanket in the crate. She will stay quiet all night even with an early morning departure from a family member. She will do her business in the backyard or on a walk, she isn’t picky on that. She really seems to like being outside and even frolics in the grass sometimes. Just one of the ways we can see her acting much younger than her 9 years! Shelly hasn’t really discovered toys yet, but she has found little treasures to nibble on so she needs to be monitored in the home. Charging cords seem to be a fun choice, she never damages them but we do catch it fairly quickly. She sometimes is interested in kids' toys, or dirty socks but she will just carry them to where she wants to lay down. Shelly loves to sit near her favourite people and it’s one of her most endearing traits. She cannot jump on the couch (although she gives it a good effort!) so we will pick her up and she loves to curl up against us and sleep. She has also recently discovered a dog bed and enjoys curling up on that as well for times when she wants her own space. She has asked that her new home allows for this same freedom to cuddle on the couch or stretch out on her own! Shelly has never had any accidents in the house or in her crate. Safe to say she is fully house trained but transitions can be hard so her new family needs to be patient and use the crate as well to help Shelly find her new routine. Some regression should be expected but consistency and training will have a huge impact. Shelly loves car rides and has had no issues with them, curling up and relaxing for the ride. She had one instance of an upset tummy on a car ride but it was not repeated. She just needs a boost to get into the car! Shelly enjoys walks but as a senior dog, she does not require endless exercise. Mostly she just loves to sniff and seems to often have her nose to the ground. A few quiet walks a day will also help her maintain her ideal weight. She has not shown any prey drive towards any little critters but there has not been a lot of exposure. She doesn’t seem to like bigger-than-her dogs, but smaller isn’t an issue so far. She encountered a family member's cat and she was curious but didn’t really care too much. Any cats in the home should be very dog savvy. She would be fine living in a home with another dog as long as they were not pestering her to play. A small, senior dog would be a suitable companion for her. She would also love to be the only pet in the house, soaking up every bit of attention possible. Shelly rarely barks but we have heard it a couple times. It's more of a “hey, look at me and give me attention” type of thing. Walks are quiet as well and she never barks at other dogs, even if they bark at her. She is a very chill and relaxed girl. Shelly would do well in any type of home, either apartment/townhouse/house but not a high rise building with lots of stairs, busy lobby etc. She is just learning about the world around her and needs a quiet setting in which to live. She has learned to do stairs so a multi level home would not be an issue for her. She would do well in a home that has a woman to help her feel comfortable and men who realize that she will take time to learn to trust them. She needs consistency and patience as she continues to grow into the amazing dog we have seen. An older couple or older family would be fine too, and any children in the house should be at least 10 years old and able to treat her with love and respect. Shelly is looking for her forever family who will give this retired girl her best chapter yet. With time and encouragement, Shelly will show herself to be a loving and affectionate family member.
