Story
We have a transport where we will be personally driving our dogs home leaving on 1/2/26 to NorCal, OR, and WA. Surrounding states will be added to our route as needed ☺️ We would love to add Holly to our trip for the right home! Holly’s story is one that stays with you long after you hear it. Born on 5/15/23, she is a beautiful Cockapoo with a soft, hypoallergenic poodle coat and the gentlest spirit. But the life she lived before coming into our rescue was anything but gentle. Holly spent her young life with a breeder who viewed her only through the lens of profit. She was bred repeatedly until her body gave out, and when she could no longer produce, she was thrown away without a thought for what she had endured. What we didn’t know until she was surrendered to us was just how much pain she had been silently carrying. Both of her back legs were severely injured. Her hip was completely dislocated. Her knee on the conjoining back legs was also dislocated and unnaturally twisted. Her knee had been breaking down from the strain of trying to survive with barely any functional mobility. She had been living this way for far too long, her suffering overlooked by those who were meant to care for her. Even so, Holly arrived with a sweetness that stopped us in our tracks — a quiet gratitude, a willingness to trust, a softness that showed just how much love she still had left to give despite everything she had been through. We moved quickly. Our orthopedic surgeon performed an FHO (femoral head ostectomy) to stabilize the weight-bearing leg. Once she began healing, she underwent another complex and specialized surgery to reconstruct her knee — a surgery that gave her not just comfort, but a true chance at a pain-free life. She has been spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, received a complete dental cleaning, and has been monitored through countless exams, x-rays, medications, and follow-up appointments over the course of many months. Every step forward was one she fought for — and one we fought right alongside her. Today, after more than $10,000 in medical care, months of recovery, and the unwavering commitment of everyone who has loved her through this journey, Holly has finally been cleared by our vet to begin looking for a forever home of her own. And she is so, so deserving. Holly moves gently and confidently now, free from the constant pain that once overshadowed her life. She enjoys soft play, leisurely walks, cozy spaces, and quiet moments with the people she trusts. She is an incredibly tender girl whose heart opens fully when she feels safe. She bonds deeply, listens beautifully, and carries herself with a calm elegance that makes you instinctively want to protect her. She does wonderfully with other gentle, respectful dogs and would thrive with a calm canine companion or as the only dog in a home that offers her softness and stability. She isn’t a dog who needs chaos, constant activity, or a busy lifestyle. She is a dog for a peaceful home — one built on love, routine, patience, and understanding. She is a companion for someone who values the emotional connection a dog can bring, someone who sees her not just for where she is now, but for what she survived to get here. Her journey has been long, emotional, and incredibly costly, but every ounce of effort has led to this moment — where she finally gets to be considered for the kind of life she should have always had. Her adoption fee is on our website at the bottom of her adoption listing at https://www.breadoflifek9refuge.org/post/holly-1 Her adoption fee is placed at our highest tier, not because it reflects her worth — that could never be measured — but because it acknowledges the extraordinary medical care she required to reclaim her life. Though we have invested well over $10,000 in her surgeries and treatment, this fee simply helps us continue offering the same chance to future dogs who come to us broken, discarded, or in desperate need of intervention. We have complete medical records and receipts documenting every part of her journey. If you feel drawn to Holly… if her resilience, her grace, and her quiet strength speak to you… if you believe you are the person who can offer her a lifetime of comfort, gentleness, and unwavering love… then we would be honored to hear from you. Holly has waited her whole life to be someone’s cherished girl. Whoever she chooses will be receiving one of the most special souls to ever pass through our rescue — a dog whose heart survived what her body could not, and who is finally ready for the kind of home where she is treasured, safe, and loved beyond measure.

Story
Our elder cocker-spaniel mix, Lily, is in need of a dog-free home. She is a playful, smart, healthy pup who loves going on walks, snuggling up with people, and engaging in a good nose puzzle. She's 10 years old and just shy of 40 pounds. She's lived with us her entire life. As she's gotten older, she has grown less and less tolerant of other dogs, including the other dog in our home, despite having lived peacefully with him for many years when they were both younger. At the recommendation of our trainer and our vet, we are looking for a place where she can thrive. Lily has always lived well with cats and has never been aggressive toward people at all. This has been an extremely hard decision, but we know she will be happier as the solo dog in her space. (For several reasons, rehoming our other dog is not an option.) If you're interested, please reach out to schedule a video call. If that goes well, we can go ahead with a meet and greet. She truly is such a good dog.

Story
Ellie here! I'm the (soon-to-be) one-eyed wonder with a love of everyone I meet. I'm a cuddly, adventerous, and joyful pup, and I'm so excited to meet you. I was originally rescued at the vet because my previous owner was unable to provide the healthcare I needed. Since moving in with my awesome foster, I've been groomed and got all the vet care I need. As you can probably see, I've got advanced glaucoma in one eye. We're going to get that removed so that it does not cause any more pain. I'm mostly blind, but that doesn't stop me from loving life and making friends. I also have a mild heart murmur that has been thouroughly checked out and is nothing to worry about at this time. I do great with dogs and people of all ages. I'm not sure how I'd feel about cats, but the people caring for me seem to think I wouldn't mind them. I enjoy lots of quality time with my people, going on regular walks, and listening to the sounds of the neighborhood. I may look like a senior, but I've got plenty of good years ahead of me. Animal Aid is dedicated to ensuring I recieve all necessary medical care before sending me home with my forever family, so I'll most likely need to recover from the eye removal before going home. I will eventually need a dental that Animal Aid will pay for. Want to meet me and fall in love? I'm in a foster home, so visit animalaidpdx.org to fill out an application and schedule a meet and greet. Est. DOB: 8/11/19 Weight: 23lb
