🚗 Meet Charlie – Looking for a Co-Pilot for Life! 🐾 *located in the Cedar Rapids Area* If you're searching for a laid-back best friend who would rather cruise the countryside than run a marathon, Charlie is your guy! At 75-80 pounds, Charlie is a handsome tan and black German Shepherd with a heart that's as big as his love for car rides. In fact, if you let him, he'd happily move right into your vehicle! Short walks, sniffing every interesting scent, a little playtime with his dog friends, and then a long nap by your side? That's Charlie's perfect day. Charlie is potty trained, knows sit and has great off-leash recall. He's working on down, stay, place, and off, and is eager to keep learning. He enjoys having his kennel available as his own quiet retreat and often chooses to nap there with the door open. He's lived successfully with dogs, cats, and even chickens! He ignores chickens completely and does well with cats, though he may occasionally need a reminder not to chase. Charlie enjoys playing with other dogs after introductions, but can be a little bossy at first and sometimes plays a bit too enthusiastically before settling in. Charlie loves squeaky stuffed toys, dental chews, liver treats, cow ears, and simply hanging out with his people. He's not much of a lap dog, but he'll happily keep you company in whatever room you're in. Like many dogs, Charlie has a few things he's still working on. He can be vocal when people approach the house—especially unfamiliar men—but he's much calmer out on walks and has never shown aggression beyond barking. He'll also need a family that can keep him on a twice-daily feeding schedule, help manage his mild hip stiffness with ramps or steps when needed, and plan for some future dental work. If you're looking for a loyal companion who's happiest riding shotgun, taking leisurely sniff walks, and spending quiet evenings together, Charlie is ready to climb into your heart... and probably your car, too. ❤️

Story
Meet Togo! *fostered in Cedar Rapids* Togo came to us from Wichita Animal Shelter as a stray and was sadly placed on the euthanasia list a few years ago. We were able to pull him to safety, and he was adopted by a family who invested time and training into him. Unfortunately the family had to return him due to a move so he is back with us. Togo is a German Shepherd/Husky mix, possibly with a bit of Malamute. From the Shepherd side, he gets his loyalty and intelligence. The Husky in him brings the personality — a little dramatic and very expressive. His Malamute traits show in his calm, sometimes aloof, and strong-willed nature. Togo already knows sit and down and has been working hard on polite leash walking and keeping all four paws on the ground instead of jumping. He is also potty trained and kennel trained, giving him a great foundation for an easy transition into his forever home. Togo is a big boy who doesn’t always realize his size, so he could accidentally knock someone over. Because of this, a home without small children would be best. He is extremely friendly and thrives around other dogs. Togo currently lives at a doggy daycare/boarding facility and absolutely loves to play, making him a great candidate for a home with other canine companions. He would love to continue going to doggie daycare to help burn off energy and keep him busy. While he can clear a 6-foot fence, he hasn’t attempted to at daycare. In his forever home, he will need supervision outside, and having another dog friend could help keep him happy and engaged in the yard. Things to know about Togo: • He can jump — and clear a 6-foot fence — if left unattended • He does best with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation • He wants to be part of a family and included in daily life (and yes, spoiled a little!) Togo is full of life, love, and personality. If you’re looking for a loyal, fun, devoted companion and are ready to keep up with this smart, active boy, Togo might just be your perfect match.

Story
Karl can exhibit anxious behavior when meeting new people and in new environments, but he will settle into the daily routine very quickly. Karl is easily kenneled up and is calm, quiet in a crate. Karl's behavior around other dogs was overall pretty good, but I would have concerns potentially placing him with another male. His posture and level of arousal elevated around 2 male dogs. One was a large Rottie, the other a small terrier. Both are neutered dogs, but both are also confident, and somewhat forward in their behavior. Karl is possessive of the ball, likes to carry it in his mouth, rather than drop, but does not seem to resource guard objects or food. He is highly food motivated. Karl responded well to have several people take him in and out of the kennel and work with him. He was very responsive to the ecollar work we did with his recall. We also worked on a Place behavior and a limited amount of leash walking. His leash skills improved easily in the training room, but once outside, he was challenging to hold onto. We switched from his martingale collar to working with a Wonder Lead (available at GunDogSupply.com) It is not a common tool, but it made a significant difference in being able to better handle him. I suspect a prong collar may also work, but regardless, he will need someone willing to put some time into his ability to walk on leash. Karl was pretty stinky, dirty when he arrived, so I got out the baby pool, played with him and rinsed him. No soap and full bath, but cleaned him up a bit. I toweled him and put a fan on him to dry. I also brushed him a little bit and put some ShowSheen on his coat. He was very good about all of that handling. Kar will bond very quickly, I believe he would bond well with anyone that provided structure and clarity for him. His anxiousness is the result of not know what to do or expect. As he learns a routine of waiting at doors, kenneling up, steadying on leash, he fell into line pretty quickly and his level. a anxiousness, while it did not go away entirely, it greatly diminished. When Karl finds his forever home, if interested Robin Macfarlane has offered a series of lessons to help him acclimate to a new home and to help him be a good companion. Robin is in Central Iowa.
