Story
Meet Togo! *fostered in Cedar Rapids* Togo came to us from Wichita Animal Shelter as a stray and was sadly placed on the euthanasia list a few years ago. We were able to pull him to safety, and he was adopted by a family who invested time and training into him. Unfortunately the family had to return him due to a move so he is back with us. Togo is a German Shepherd/Husky mix, possibly with a bit of Malamute. From the Shepherd side, he gets his loyalty and intelligence. The Husky in him brings the personality — a little dramatic and very expressive. His Malamute traits show in his calm, sometimes aloof, and strong-willed nature. Togo already knows sit and down and has been working hard on polite leash walking and keeping all four paws on the ground instead of jumping. He is also potty trained and kennel trained, giving him a great foundation for an easy transition into his forever home. Togo is a big boy who doesn’t always realize his size, so he could accidentally knock someone over. Because of this, a home without small children would be best. He is extremely friendly and thrives around other dogs. Togo currently lives at a doggy daycare/boarding facility and absolutely loves to play, making him a great candidate for a home with other canine companions. He would love to continue going to doggie daycare to help burn off energy and keep him busy. While he can clear a 6-foot fence, he hasn’t attempted to at daycare. In his forever home, he will need supervision outside, and having another dog friend could help keep him happy and engaged in the yard. Things to know about Togo: • He can jump — and clear a 6-foot fence — if left unattended • He does best with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation • He wants to be part of a family and included in daily life (and yes, spoiled a little!) Togo is full of life, love, and personality. If you’re looking for a loyal, fun, devoted companion and are ready to keep up with this smart, active boy, Togo might just be your perfect match.

🐾 Meet Karl! *located in the Cedar Rapids Area* Looking for a loyal, intelligent companion who thrives on routine? Karl is a handsome, older gentleman ready for his forever home! He is a resilient dog who settles into household schedules quickly, bonds deeply with his handlers, and is incredibly eager to learn. 🏡 Home Manners & Crate Behavior Crate Superstar: Karl is incredibly quiet, calm, and goes right into his kennel without a fuss. Routine Oriented: While change can make him a little anxious, providing a predictable routine causes his anxiety to melt away. Bath Time Gentleman: He tolerates bathing and full-body handling exceptionally well. Friendly Companion: He warms up quickly to both men and women who offer a structured environment. 🐕 Social Life & Environment Suburban or City Life Only: Karl was surrendered for chasing livestock, so he cannot live on a farm or ranch. Polished in Public: He showed excellent manners in a training room surrounded by other dogs, with zero outbursts. Dog Selectivity: He gets along well with most dogs but probably shouldn't live with a dominate male. Prefers Calm Friends: He becomes tense around forward, confident male dogs, so he needs a home without other male pets. 🧠 Smart, Driven, & Eager to Learn Highly Food Motivated: Karl will do absolutely anything for a treat, making training a total breeze! Toy Enthusiast: He loves playing fetch—though he prefers proudly carrying the ball around rather than dropping it. No Guarding: He happily shares and does not guard his food, toys, or resources. Great Foundation: He already knows "Place," has an excellent recall, and transitions easily between different handlers. 🦮 What Karl's Perfect Adopter Looks Like A Guide & Leader: Karl's initial anxiety comes from simply not knowing what is expected of him. Practicing simple boundaries—like waiting at doorways and steadying on the leash—brings out his absolute best, most confident self. Dedicated to Leash Walk Practice: While he is an angel walking indoors, the exciting outdoor world makes him a strong puller! He responds beautifully to specialized walking tools (like a Wonder Lead). He needs an adopter committed to continuing his outdoor leash manners.

🚗 Meet Charlie – Looking for a Co-Pilot for Life! 🐾 If you're searching for a laid-back best friend who would rather cruise the countryside than run a marathon, Charlie is your guy! At 75-80 pounds, Charlie is a handsome tan and black German Shepherd with a heart that's as big as his love for car rides. In fact, if you let him, he'd happily move right into your vehicle! Short walks, sniffing every interesting scent, a little playtime with his dog friends, and then a long nap by your side? That's Charlie's perfect day. Charlie is potty trained, knows sit and has great off-leash recall. He's working on down, stay, place, and off, and is eager to keep learning. He enjoys having his kennel available as his own quiet retreat and often chooses to nap there with the door open. He's lived successfully with dogs, cats, and even chickens! He ignores chickens completely and does well with cats, though he may occasionally need a reminder not to chase. Charlie enjoys playing with other dogs after introductions, but can be a little bossy at first and sometimes plays a bit too enthusiastically before settling in. Charlie loves squeaky stuffed toys, dental chews, liver treats, cow ears, and simply hanging out with his people. He's not much of a lap dog, but he'll happily keep you company in whatever room you're in. Like many dogs, Charlie has a few things he's still working on. He can be vocal when people approach the house—especially unfamiliar men—but he's much calmer out on walks and has never shown aggression beyond barking. He'll also need a family that can keep him on a twice-daily feeding schedule, help manage his mild hip stiffness with ramps or steps when needed, and plan for some future dental work. If you're looking for a loyal companion who's happiest riding shotgun, taking leisurely sniff walks, and spending quiet evenings together, Charlie is ready to climb into your heart... and probably your car, too. ❤️

Meet Zeus! Located in the Des Moines Area **GSDRI is not involved with this dog at all, other than a courtesy listing. Please contact Lori** We are needing to rehome our male GSD. He is almost 4 yrs old; I rescued him from a farmer wanting him as an indoor dog only. He is obedience trained by the best, Holly Leas, All Breed Dog Obedience Training-Neal D Leas in Des Moines Iowa. He understands German and English commands. He has become a bit mouthy around children under 10, so I would recommend a home with older children. He has not been around cats, but he does have a high prey drive so I would not recommend him around cats or smaller pets. He loves the outdoors, snow and water, and most definitely walks. He sleeps in his kennel, although it is not locked, he still prefers it. He is a Velcro dog, and needs an alpha owner, as Zeus tries to be the alpha. Zeus is up to date on vaccinations, and he has been neutered I believe he would do good with another dog; he currently lives with a female dog. He has been around other dogs and kenneled with both male and female dogs. Please reach out if you would like to meet Zeus. To find the best fit his trainer and owner will meet up with you. **Please contact Lori @ #(515) 443-3031 or email: ljanmyers@gmail.com**

Meet Sophie! *Located in the Des Moines area* Sophie is a 16‑week‑old breeder release pup who found herself at the shelter simply because she got “too old” to sell — but her second chance is already shining bright. She’s a big girl in the making with an even bigger personality, and she absolutely adores playing with her foster sister. Sophie is growing into a confident, spirited pup with a bold play style that suggests she may be a naturally dominant dog as she matures. She’ll thrive with an owner who is 100% committed to training, socialization, and plenty of structured activities. She already shows a bit of ball drive, so she might even enjoy dabbling in sport dog work someday. We suspect she came from a large breeding operation and spent most of her early life in a kennel, so she’s still learning all the basics — including potty training and how to head into the grass when nature calls. She’s making progress, but she’ll need patience, consistency, and lots of positive experiences. Sophie is still getting settled and isn’t quite ready for adoption yet, but she’s already proving to be a smart, lovable girl with tons of potential. Stay tuned — her perfect person is out there!
