Please note that SNARR NE is a volunteer-based organization. While our volunteers will try to respond to you as quickly as possible, it is helpful if you review the below information about our adoption process before emailing: LISTED BREED(S) & AGE: We are taking our best guess on age, breed, and size when fully grown, based on the puppy's/dog's physical appearance and what we might have learned about one or both parents depending on the situation. *NOTE* We rarely know a dog's exact age, nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. Because we often do not have access to medical records at the time that we are listing for dogs for adoption, there are sometimes discrepancies between what is posted on their profile and what might be listed on a dog's medical records. Story
If you are a lover of black dogs, hold onto your heart because Barry is about to steal it! This 4-year-old hunk is incredibly affectionate and just loves being with his people! Barry came to our rescue in 2021 and has been living with his current family since that time. Unfortunately, due to unexpected changes in the family’s lives, they have come to the tearful decision that they can no longer give Barry the care and attention he needs. Barry can best be described as smart, loving, and kindhearted. He has a moderate energy level and loves to go for walks where he does well on a leash. He also loves to go for rides in the car, especially when it's to someplace fun – he loves being where the action is! Barry knows his commands like sit, stay, paw, and lay down. He responds to his name and is a polite-mannered dog. He will only jump on the couch or bed if invited and his mom does that often with him because Barry is a champion cuddler! Rub his belly and his ears and you’ll have a friend for life! Although Barry is now an only dog, in his prior life he lived with other dogs and loves playing with other dogs at daycare. We feel he would likely do well with a canine companion to keep him company when the humans are out. Barry greets everyone he meets on outings, young and old, like they are old friends. He has truly never met a stranger!! We imagine he would do well with children over the age of 10 years. This beautiful retriever mix weighs in around 60 lbs, an ideal weight for his frame. He has a beautiful, shiny black coat that you will want to pet over and over. And that will be just fine with Barry!! He will reward you with soft murmurs of contentment. We know you can hear the sounds in your mind already!! Barry is neutered, heartworm negative and up-to-date on his vaccinations. He is in the northeast and is available for immediate adoption. If you are looking for a happy companion dog to share in your adventures and are home most of the day, Barry could be the perfect fit for you. Just be sure you don’t mind being stopped when out walking when people ask, “what kind of dog is he?!” He’s that adorable!! If you’re considering adopting a dog, please remember that a dog of any color can fit your lifestyle. Don’t overlook this black beauty because you may be overlooking your new best friend. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. If you would like to be part of Barry's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Michael to be considered to adopt Barry. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to lean more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Black Dog Syndrome Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website. You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did! Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. SGRR ADOPTION FEES - Effective May 1, 2020 (subject to change) $750 Puppy - up to 6 months $650 Young 6 months - 6 years $550 Senior 7 - 9 years $450 Senior 10 years and older $550 Young Special Needs $400 Senior 7+ Special Needs $1000 Young Bonded Pair $900 Senior 7+ Bonded Pair A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog. Please click on the Donation link below to support SGRR! Barry
