Introducing Dracula—a two-year-old, 59-pound Flat-Coated Retriever mix who looks like he was assembled from midnight, velvet, and one industrial-sized bottle of conditioner. With his glossy black coat, impressive fluff, and name that sounds like he should be lurking dramatically in a castle, you might expect a mysterious creature of the night. Instead, Dracula is a SWEET BOY!!! We cannot emphasize this enough. Despite the dramatic name and gothic wardrobe, Dracula’s overall temperament is pure sugar. He is about as threatening as a stuffed animal that has recently completed sensitivity training. He isn’t here to drink your blood, steal your soul, or haunt your ancestral estate. He would, however, be delighted to occupy your couch, collect your affection, and follow you around like an enormous fluffy shadow with feelings.

Dracula loves other dogs and approaches canine friendship with the enthusiasm of someone who has just discovered unlimited appetizers. His favorite games include Wrestle, Grab the Collar, and Chase Chase—three highly sophisticated athletic events governed by rules that make sense exclusively to dogs. He also enjoys teaming up with his foster siblings to patrol the fence line and tree line for squirrels. Dracula does not know exactly what will happen if they ever catch one, but that is a future problem. For now, the neighborhood is secure, the squirrels remain deeply inconvenienced, and Dracula takes his duties very seriously. Another friendly, playful dog would be wonderful for him. Dracula is a social butterfly tucked inside a large black fur coat, and he genuinely enjoys having canine friends around for companionship, games, and collaborative squirrel surveillance. He could also do well as an only dog with a family who is home most of the day and willing to provide plenty of interaction. What would not suit him is spending long days alone while everyone disappears to work, school, errands, dinner, and whatever else humans apparently find more important than cuddling him. Dracula wants to be included. He is not clingy in an emotionally complicated way; he simply feels life is better when someone else is present to tell him how handsome and sweet he is. Dracula has not been fostered around cats, so we cannot say whether he would view one as a friend, a supervisor, or an unusually judgmental squirrel. He also has not lived with children in his foster home. Based on his friendly temperament, we think he could do well with kids who are comfortable around an excited, nearly 60-pound dog and understand that he may jump up when enthusiasm briefly overrides his manners. He would not mean to knock anyone over. He would merely be attempting to deliver affection through an overly ambitious full-body greeting. Meeting new people is one of Dracula’s favorite activities. In fact, he does not really believe in strangers. He believes there are friends, future friends, and people who have not yet realized they are supposed to pet him. He may jump up in his excitement, because waiting patiently at floor level feels terribly inefficient when affection is happening several feet above him. His foster family is working with him on keeping all four paws grounded, but his intentions are entirely sweet. Dracula simply feels that every newcomer deserves an enthusiastic welcome and a reasonable opportunity to tell him how handsome he is.
He lands around a 7 out of 10 on the energy scale. Dracula is playful, social, and ready to participate, but he is not operating at the frantic pace of a caffeinated border collie who has just discovered competitive sports. He enjoys playing with other dogs, taking walks, exploring new places, splashing in water, and joining his people on outings. Once the activity is over, however, he is equally happy to settle in for pets and cuddles. He is an excellent combination of “Where are we going?” and “Would you mind moving over so I can lie directly against you?” Dracula would love an active, social family who wants to include him in their adventures. He is the type of dog who would happily accompany you on walks, car rides, day trips, and other outings—especially if there is a strong possibility that strangers will admire him. He does not require a fog-covered castle, a horse-drawn carriage, or several hundred acres of Transylvanian countryside. A regular vehicle will do just fine. Dracula can load himself into the car and rides very well, spending much of the trip looking out the window and observing the scenery. He is a total car dog and appears perfectly content to let you handle the driving while he monitors traffic, watches the world go by, and silently judges anyone who does not notice how handsome he is. He also LOVES going for walks and is a very good leash walker. He may pull if a squirrel or rabbit suddenly crosses his path, because apparently woodland creatures do not respect traffic laws or Dracula’s concentration. However, he does not generally drag his foster family down the street like a runaway parade balloon. He walks nicely, enjoys exploring, and makes a wonderful companion for anyone who would like their daily strolls to include a handsome black shadow with a cheerful attitude.
When it comes to toys, Dracula is a fan of plush toys and squeaky toys. Balls, however, are beneath him. You may throw one with all the optimism in the world, and Dracula will watch it leave with the calm detachment of someone who understands that your poor decisions are not his responsibility. Fetch requires one person to throw something and another person to bring it back, and Dracula sees no reason he should be assigned the second, less sensible half of that arrangement. Give him something soft, squeaky, and suitable for carrying around, though, and he is delighted. Dracula also enjoys playing in water, because even creatures of the night need recreational activities. Whether he is splashing, playing with dog friends, walking with his humans, or stretching out for cuddles, he approaches life with cheerful enthusiasm. He has no known fears, dramatic overreactions, food guarding, or resource guarding. Vacuums, storms, mysterious noises, and the general indignities of domestic life have not sent him into a theatrical collapse. For someone named after one of literature’s most dramatic figures, Dracula is refreshingly low on emotional monologues. He would do well in either a home with a secure fence or an apartment where he receives regular leash walks, exercise, and companionship. However, if his future home has a yard, his family will need to be outside with him and keep an eye on things. Dracula is social, curious, and interested in knowing what is happening beyond his immediate jurisdiction so a secure none see through fence would be best. Since settling in, making dog friends, and becoming part of the household routine, Dracula has not escaped or attempted another unauthorized field trip. Still, he will inspect a fence for low areas, and his future family should not assume that a fenced yard means he can be placed outside alone and forgotten. He wants his people nearby anyway, so supervised yard time is the best setup for everyone. A tall, secure fence would certainly be helpful, but attentive humans are the most important part. Dracula does not need acres of land; he needs exercise, companionship, and someone willing to keep an eye on his occasional architectural evaluations.
Inside the house, Dracula does very well. He is potty trained and has not been chewing things he should not. Your shoes, furniture, baseboards, and vaguely expensive decorative objects can all release the breath they have been holding. He eats his meals in his kennel and walks into it by himself when it is time to eat. Apparently the quickest way to make Dracula embrace enclosed spaces is to establish that food will be served there. He has not been routinely kenneled for long stretches, though. When his foster family is away, he stays in the laundry room and kitchen, and he sleeps in that same area at night. This arrangement works well for him. He settles indoors without chewing the house, summoning supernatural forces, or reorganizing the laundry by flavor. Dracula is not much of a barker. He has joined the other dogs for a few strongly worded announcements while chasing squirrels, but otherwise he has been pretty quiet in his foster home. He does not feel compelled to comment on every passing vehicle, falling leaf, or suspicious breeze. The couch is where Dracula’s true calling becomes clear. His foster was asked whether he gets on the couch, and the answer was simply, “Dracula is a cuddle bug!!!” This does not technically answer the furniture question, yet somehow it answers it perfectly. Dracula would very much like to be wherever the cuddling happens. If that is the couch, he will happily join you. If you were hoping to maintain a respectful gap between dog and human, Dracula regrets to inform you that your proposal has been reviewed and denied. He is affectionate without reservation and believes being petted is not merely pleasant but an essential part of household operations. At nearly 60 pounds, he may occupy more lap than you technically have available, but Dracula is willing to work around that limitation. He can lean against you, drape himself beside you, place his head in your lap, or simply become a warm black blanket stretched across the portion of the couch you mistakenly believed belonged to you.
Dracula’s ideal home is one where he will be treated like part of the family and included in everyday life. Another friendly dog would give him a built-in playmate, wrestling partner, and fellow squirrel patrol officer. If he is the only dog, he would do best with people who are home much of the day and excited to provide the companionship he craves. He would love regular walks, car rides, adventures, playtime, and a reliable supply of affection. He does not need constant entertainment, but he does need connection. This is not a dog who wants to live alone in the backyard while occasionally receiving food through a door. Dracula wants to be inside, beside his people, preferably close enough to absorb body heat and overhear every household conversation. So, if your home is missing a velvety black cuddle monster who loves dogs, adores people, rides beautifully in the car, walks nicely on a leash, and considers personal attention one of life’s basic necessities, Dracula may be your boy. He will not sleep upside down in your attic, turn into a bat, or demand that you address him as Count. He will, however, make you laugh, join you on adventures, patrol your property for suspicious squirrels, and love you with his entire soft, ridiculous heart.
