Story
Have you ever started something new and found yourself totally out of your depth? Moved to a new country where you didn't know the language? Started a new job that was so totally and completely different from your old one that you hardly knew which way was up? For me, it was coming to the shelter after being a stray in Cadet, possibly for a long time. When I got here, they gave me a name: Chickie. They estimated that I was about a year old. I had been running with two other dogs, whom they guess may be my sister and mom. Thing is, being in a situation like that is daunting. You don't have anything familiar to hang onto. But luckily... I just so happen to be really brave and sweet. What can I say? I'm awesome. As it turns out, people can be really nice! Hey, have you guys ever had your ears scratched? It's amazing. And sometimes, they put a leash on you (that's a little weird) and then you get to walk around together and sniff stuff. That's amazing. I'm curious about toys, but not exactly sure what to do with them. Oh, and the stuff they give you to eat? Oh MAN. It's the BEST! I do suspect that I've still got a lot to learn about this whole "pet dog life" thing, but hey... I'm more than willing to put in the effort if you are! In the shelter, I seem interested in making friends with the other dogs in their kennels and, of course, I was friends with the dogs I came in with, but I haven't had an official dog playdate. I'd love to meet any potential dog siblings in any potential new family before making it official! Overall, I'm gentle and curious, but you can sometimes still see that I'm unsure when something is really new or weird or daunting or moves too fast. And going from being a shelter dog to a beloved part of a family will also be an adjustment! But I'm ready. I can hardly wait. If interested please fill out a preliminary at odas.org/canine and someone will contact you to schedule your visit.

Story
Liv. Here’s what I know about her so far—it’s all good! She's super kid and dog friendly, playful and active, always up for some fun! She loves to snuggle and is just the sweetest little thing. Her petite size makes her even more adorable, and she's so easy-going. Plus, she's brave and not shy at all. Liv is doing really well! She’d do wonderfully in an active home, especially one with another dog. She’s ready to learn her basics, manners, and share lots of love. She’s been having a great time playing with the other dogs here, respecting their boundaries, which is fantastic. If you're interested in meeting her, please visit www.nttsars.com and fill out an application. December 12, 2025, 12:27 am

Story
I got my dog from a lady who rescued it from another lady. She was born March 2024. I’m looking for a home that can help her with her anxiety, and be there more than us. We work way too much. She is wild, hyper, smart. She does have a bit of separation anxiety.

Story
Sadly needing to rehome our 7mo old German Shepherd/Jack Russel Mix. He looks all German Shepherd. He is house trained but still working on his excitable jumping. He loves to play and be close. Does great with our 4 kids and our 6 year old Aussie. Unfortunately our 6yo Aussie doesn’t feel the same about him. She has a very anxious personality and while he loves to play with her she is very temperamental. We have tried many different things to make it work but unfortunately we think it’s best to separate them.

Story
I've been sponsored by the Petfinder Kia Grant to help reduce adoption fees. Thanks to the wonderful Petfinder Foundation my adoption fee is only $6.25! Hiya, I'm Finn! I am a 3 year old German Shepherd/Husky mix (best guess). I'm quite the chatterbox. I love to 'talk' to anyone who'll listen. It's my way of saying, 'Hey, let's be friends!' I've got enough energy to keep up with the most active of families, but I'm also a champion snuggler when it's time to wind down. I'm looking for a forever home with someone who loves playtime and cuddles as much as I do. If you need a brave, loyal, and hilarious sidekick, I'm your guy! I do good with other dogs as long as we are properly intoduced. However, I do need a home without cats as I like to chase them. I would do best in a home with older children due to my active nature. Did I mention I'm working on training right now? Well I am and I can tell you that I am the best at 'sit' and 'down' that any dog could ever be! Adopt me and I promise you won't regret it. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##1783284##
