Story
Say hello to Max! Max is available for adoption after spending the winter in the SW. He had a great time and his foster parents learned a great deal more about him. He remains the sweetest boy ever and there has not been a person that has met him that hasn't fallen in love with him. Although foster mom and dad adore him, they know there is a better setting for him that includes another dog and a fenced-in yard. Initially, when he came into foster care he was nervous in new settings, but now he just goes with the flow as long as his people are there. Over the last 5 months he has met and played with lots of dogs. He reads dogs very well. They can be big, small, old, young, wildly playful, calm, quiet, and even standoffish to his youthful exuberance, but no matter what, he figures them out quickly. His play style can be a lot for small dogs. He had a golden girlfriend by the name of Tess who had the same hard play style and they were the best buds when together. Sadly, he had to leave her behind to come back to Iowa. He did doggie daycare at least one day a week with an in-home dog sitter and also spent a few nights in her care. He did very well but was very happy to see foster mom when she picked him up. The daycare has a pool and he kept a wide path around it until he fell in. Apparently, he screamed like a baby and all the neighbors came out to see what happened. This behavior was not surprising as he has never been a fan of the water. If you are looking for a dog that enjoys the water, Max is not that dog. His crate anxiety has gotten better, but his adopter will need to be willing to put the time in to desensitize him to a crate in his new home. He can currently be left alone, with a TV on for up to 4 hours, but we think with another dog in the home that is calm and content he will do even better. This is his biggest challenge and it will take time so the adopter must be willing to make accommodations as he learns he will be okay crated when left home. I do not believe that he will ever be the dog you can leave home a full workday. Training to desensitize him to the crate will be provided to any adopter interested in him. Max's requirements: Dogs - Max requires a dog to act as a good role model and be his play buddy. A playful, yet calm dog would be ideal. Cats - Probably not cats in the home. We will test him with the grandcat again, but he has a very strong prey drive in the yard to squirrels, bunnies, and birds. Fence - physical fence required due to his high prey drive. Max should always be leashed when outside a fence because when his prey drive kicks in, he doesn't listen or make good choices. He is unaware of the risk of crossing the street without looking. Kids - He does well with the 16, 11, and 1.5-year-old grandkids, but the 3.5-year-old is too much for him. kids should be fine, but each child is different so we can talk about the kids in the home. A calm home - a lot of yelling will make him anxious. Energy - Max can be high energy, but he can also be a couch potato. Once he has a play buddy I think he will be more of a medium energy dog. If you are interested in Max please fill out an application and someone will contact you to talk about him. https://grroiowa.org/adoption-information/

Story
4/9/25 – Buddy is ready to start looking for his forever home while he waits for his eye surgery (cherry eye) later this month. This cutie will turn one on April 19th! At his vet appointment this month, he weighed 55.5 lbs. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. More about Buddy from his foster parents: *Very sweet, craves attention *Requires another playful dog as he loves to play with his foster siblings *He takes cues from other dogs in the home *Good with cats *Physical fence is required (no invisible fence) He is high energy and it helps to burn his puppy energy along with walks. *Needs training classes *Kids preferably older and dog savvy *Very food motivated *Gets car sick *Someone home more than not as he does have separation anxiety. He is not destructive but will bark. *Currently can’t be crated The foster is looking for a home where the adopter will be willing to attend training classes with Buddy. If Buddy sounds like the boy for you, read through our adoption eligibility requirements. If you meet those and the requirements his foster has set, submit your application today to start the process! https://grroiowa.org/adoption-information/

Story
4/16/25-Foster Update: Bella continues to get braver every day!! She still shows no interest in playing with our resident dog, but she does enjoy having him close by. Potty training has gone well, and she is still sleeping in her crate overnight. She loves attention, and if she had her way, somebody would be petting her 24 hours a day. 🙂 We are not sure how she is around cats, but she did show interest when she saw one on TV! Good interest or bad interest… We are not sure. If you are someone with a patient, resident dog, and you are willing to work with her, she might be a wonderful addition to your family. ******* 3/11/25-Foster Update: Bella is a sweet 6-year-old Golden Retriever and ready to start looking for her forever home. She was surrendered from a breeder and has normal breeder issues such as being afraid of new people, noises, and new situations. She has learned to trust us and comes to us for attention but will crouch down when we walk up to her. She has learned to like and trust her foster brother but it took a week or so for that to happen. She eats and sleeps (at night) in a crate and during the day sleeps in it with the door left open. She is good about letting you know if she needs to go outside as she will pace around and not lie down. We are not sure about kids and cats but feel she might be best with kids a little older (8+) who don’t make lots of sudden movements and loud noises. She will need a physical fence and another dog similar in size so she can continue to be more confident. Bella needs a patient family willing to work with her on trust. If she sounds like she might be a fit for your family, please submit your application today! https://grroiowa.org/adoption-information/

Story
6/16/25- Vince is a two-year-old gorgeous, large cream colored boy in need of a family, including a dog sibling. What a lover! He is crate trained, working on leash manners while loving his walks, and loves his meals…. with this in mind, he needs to keep moving and maybe drop a few pounds. An active playmate in a fenced yard would be best for helping him to get in better shape. New experiences can cause him some stress, so his family will need to be patient during his transition to his new home, but his medications are doing wonders! We’re not sure how he’ll do with cats yet (his foster home is catless), but he is more of a couch potato than hunter right now. He has had some interaction with children, but might do best with older children as he’s a big guy. Think 90-pound gentle giant. He will do best with people who are home more than not due to his tendency to get anxious. And he really needs that dog sibling to snuggle up with at the end of a play session. What a beautiful dog! And now he just needs an experienced family to help him find his forever home. Submit your adoption application today! https://grroiowa.org/adoption-information/

Story
Meet Arlo! Arlo is a medium-sized sporting dog with a zest for life and a serious love for water! He and his buddy Mack were found exploring the outskirts of Marshalltown, but despite efforts to find their owner, no one came forward. Based on their similar age and looks, we think Arlo and Mack might be siblings—but they don’t need to be adopted together. This fluffy adventurer has a long, beautiful coat that will need regular grooming to keep him looking and feeling his best. He’ll bring you his bucket when he wants it filled with water, just so he can splash around! After a good romp outdoors, he settles down into a calm, well-mannered pup who lives for ear scratches and good company. If you’re looking for an active, water-loving companion with a big heart and an even bigger personality, Arlo might just be your guy. Come meet him today—he’s ready to make a splash in your life!

Story
Old Yeller, is that a new trend? Old stuff made NEW?? Cause I am NOT old, although I am Yeller, a really pretty YELLER COLOR!!! :) I am a Yeller Chesapeake bay retriever/ YELLER lab mix, it is important for my new family to know about the Chesapeake bay breed. We can be very stubborn, smart and independent and I really like to be in charge, so my new family needs to be strong leaders too. I am a handsome bloke, with swirls of yellow and white all through my coat. I am very smart and very sweet. I can from a high kill shelter with no hope- Now I EXUDE hope!! And LOVE!!! I WAS heartworm positive but have already finished the treatment and am NEGATIVE and just stay on prevention for the rest of my life. I am good with other dogs, but really would be best in an only dog home, cause I want all the attention :) I LOVE MY people and I tend to take "control" of my home so have to have a couple of things... 1) STRONG leadership owner, 2) I have to have an owner who will be wiling to not let me meet everyone who visits.. I want to protect my home a little too much... and 3) I have to stay in the San Antonio/TX area so my rescue friends can keep close tabs on me and how i am doing :) I have been running and playing since I am safe, but really am a couch potato. I am a bigger boy and about 65-70#. Look me up, get my number, text or call me OR just APPLY to ADOPT ME!!! I will be waiting by the phone!!! Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX)
