Story
Meet Mowgli — our gentle giant with the softest soul. 🖤🐾 This stunning Great Dane came to us from one of our rural shelter partners. He was originally adopted from that same shelter as a puppy, but through no fault of his own, his owner recently returned him due to unforeseen circumstances. Now, at around 5 years old, Mowgli finds himself starting over. When he arrived, it was clear he’d been through a lot. He’s extremely emaciated and needs some serious groceries to help him fill back out to the majestic boy he’s meant to be. But even with his ribs showing and his past uncertain, his spirit is nothing short of incredible. Mowgli is one of the easiest, calmest, most docile dogs we’ve ever had the honor of helping. He doesn’t make a peep in his crate, moves through life with the gentlest demeanor, and gets along wonderfully with all other dogs. He’s submissive, sweet, and just wants to be loved — that’s it. If you’re looking for a loyal, low-maintenance companion with a heart as big as his paws, Mowgli is truly something special. This boy deserves a forever home that sees the beauty in his quiet strength and gives him the chance to thrive again. Give Mowgli the happy ending he’s waited far too long for. ❤️ Apply to adopt on our website!

Story
Tux is the stereotypical Great Dane. Wanna laugh? He’s goofy. Have a cat? He has zero prey drive and will want to be friends. Have a lap? He’s climbing on it because he’s a lap dog. Want a horse but aren’t allowed to keep one in your yard? He’ll fill the gap. Tux is kind, silly, bubbly, and loves nothing more than a cozy spot to nap. He came to the shelter unbelievably emaciated, and despite being totally failed by humans in his past, he has loved every human he’s met. He is dog-friendly (male and female), cat-friendly, and people friendly. He’s crate and house-trained. The vet estimates he’s right around a year old, so his golden years are still ahead of him.Tux is also kid friendly, however he would likely do best in a home with older children due to his size. He has never shown an ounce of aggression, but he’s still learning that when he jumps, he’s big enough to knock an adult over, so a child doesn’t stand a chance! He has been in a foster home for almost a month and has been a wonderfully easy and pleasant addition to our family of two pre-existing dogs.

Story
Surrey arrived at the shelter as a pregnant stray and bravely raised her puppies right here in our care. Now that all her babies have found their homes, it’s finally Surrey’s time to step into the spotlight and find a family of her own- and her adoption fee has been sponsored by the adopters of one of her puppies! We believe Surrey is an Anatolian Shepherd mix, and true to her breed, she is a large, powerful dog with strong protective instincts. Because of this, she will need an experienced adopter who understands guardian breeds and can provide confident, consistent leadership. Surrey is incredibly sweet with people she trusts—she adores being pet and brushed, welcomes affection, and has a soft, loving presence once she bonds with you.Surrey does have some particular needs:She can be selective with other dogs and would do best meeting other dogs with careful and conscientious introductions. We have noticed Surrey does best with male dogs.Due to her very large size and protective nature, she should not go to a home with small children. She does not like being left alone and will sometimes bark when lonely, so she’s best suited for someone who is home often or can make arrangements to minimize long stretches by herself.Like many guardian breeds, she needs plenty of mental stimulation to keep her happy and balanced. And yes—she sheds! Regular brushing at least once a week (which she loves) is a must.On the plus side, Surrey is potty-trained, knows how to sit on command, and is eager to please her people. With the right home—one that appreciates her breed traits, gives her structure, and lets her be herself—Surrey will be an incredibly loyal, affectionate companion. If you’re experienced with large guardian breeds and ready to open your home and heart to a devoted dog who’s finally ready for her next chapter, Surrey is waiting to meet you. We currently have Surrey at our offsite facility in Ravenel where she has much more space- please email TransitionCenter@charlestonanimalsociety.org to set up an appointment to meet Surrey.
