Story
**Meet Scruffy on Saturday, October 10th from 10 am to 1 pm at Dublin Petsmart west, 6960 Amador Plaza Rd.** Scruffy is an 11-month-old, 64-pound Aussie/doodle mix who is basically a big, goofy puppy in a mostly grownup body! Scruffy has a soft, non-shedding-like, brown coat with black and grey markings, floppy ears, big beautiful brown eyes, and a fluffy tail. He was recently shaved down for the warmer weather, but that fluffy tail gives you a pretty good idea of what his coat will look like once it grows back! This boy is silly, playful, smart, and full of personality. He definitely takes after the Aussie side of his family. He loves to romp, roll and roughhouse play with toys, chew on dog-safe, stuffed animals, and be part of whatever his people are doing. Scruffy enjoys his daily walks, loves going for car rides, is house trained, and sleeps through the night in his crate. He is friendly with people and has done well living with other dogs. Now for the important part: Scruffy is still VERY much a puppy! Scruffy originally came into rescue after a senior couple realized that raising a large, energetic puppy wasn’t the right fit for them. Unfortunately, he didn’t receive much of the basic training or structure that puppies need during those early months. So while Scruffy may be 64 pounds and 11-months-old, sometimes he still thinks he’s a silly 12-week-old puppy! Which can be not very cute. He can be mouthy, bouncy, goofy and rambunctious, and he is still learning appropriate puppy manners. He’s not a bad boy: he’s simply a big adolescent puppy who needs someone willing to teach him what is expected of him. The great news? Scruffy is SMART. He picks up new things quickly, wants to engage with his people, and genuinely wants to be a good boy. With consistency, structure, exercise and continued basic obedience training, we think this guy is going to make an incredible companion. Because of Scruffy’s size, energy and pushy, puppy personality, he would do best in a home with adults who are ready to treat him like their baby, while also providing firm, consistent guidance. He needs people who understand that his playful, mouthy behaviors must be redirected and managed with patience, structure and consistency. Scruffy’s ideal home is with an experienced, active family who is comfortable with a larger, energetic dog and understands the needs and behaviors of an adolescent puppy. He will need a home with a yard where he can play and burn off some of that puppy energy and maybe even with a large, fur sibling or two. His family should be prepared for daily walks, hikes, adventures and plenty of enrichment. Most importantly, Scruffy needs someone who understands his mouthy, puppy behaviors and is committed to giving him the training, boundaries, structure and guidance he missed early on. Scruffy isn’t looking for perfection, he’s looking for someone willing to help him grow into the amazing dog we know he can be. If you are an experienced, large dog person who is willing to set boundaries and be consistent with them, but one who loves big, goofy, intelligent dogs and doesn't mind putting work into the puppy stage, Scruffy might just be your guy. If you're interested in Scruffy, please submit an application by clicking on the APPLY FOR ADOPTION box located below his photos on the right side.
