This adorable puppy Saul is the happiest, silliest, energetic and proud boy you will ever meet. He loves to play, learn new things, and especially loves to always be with his humans. Saul is the most handsome 3mth old Husky mix. Having the Husky breed in him would be the reason he is so silly and chatty.
He came to us from Manitoba, were he was found wandering alone , fending for himself, very skinny and very dry skin. He also had a corneal ulcer from an eye injury. Since he has been with us he has been on high quality food and now is at a healthy puppy weight and his fur is looking much healthier. His eye is all healed up and he is looking great! He is loving being in a safe place where he is eating regular meals and being able to have good quality sleeps. Saul is now full of joy and it didn’t take long for him to warm up to his new surroundings and family members. He shows such confidence; will explore anything you bring his way.
Saul will be a strong medium size dog of approx. 50 to 60lbs when full grown. Saul has the true Husky look with a thick soft puppy coat. He has brown, black, white in his coat, with the bottom part of his body white. His stunning markings on his face make him a dashing boy, has unique ears with black edging all around the outside, he almost got the name ‘outline’ because of them. Saul is such a sweet natured pup and you can see it when you look into his beautiful dark brown eyes that show such a curiosity. Many of the husky traits are shining already, smart, silly, sassy, loyal and proud. He doesn’t have too much stubbornness to him as you hear these breeds have, but he is still a puppy. One thing he does do is like to express himself a lot when he wants something or doesn’t get his way. It is a characteristic that you can only adore.
Saul will need a detached home and would love a large fenced yard to spend time in, he loves the outside just as much as the inside. Since he likes to express himself an apartment or attached home will not be in his or the neighbours best interest. Husky people know and love the wide range of vocalizations of the breed and how they are always talking to you or sassing you!
He is very easy going. He absolutely loves his two foster dog siblings, he certainly doesn’t let his puppy size get in the way of playing, he has no problem initiating play and wrestling with the big dogs. He certain thinks he is one of them. When they are outside and the other dogs are tired of playing he will easily switch his attention to sniffing out those real good scents, find bugs to jump at or just sit and listen to all the noises. Once he comes in he will have some independent play with a toy or chew bone, he may on his own sneak away to a quiet place and nap. He likes to hide as he is not a fan of being in his crate during the day. He has no problem when its night to sleep a full 7 hours though.
Saul will do well with another young playful same size dog for him to expel some energy, but we also think he would do well as an only dog with the appropriate physical and mental exercise.
Saul loves when people come to visit or going on outings where people are present. He has been to his human siblings sporting events and just loves the attention, belly rubs he gets. If another human is walking by he will turn and think he needs to follow them and that they need to give him some attention. He gets so much attention everywhere he goes.
Saul loves to communicate with his humans, whether complaining or just letting you know he is still there. He knows what he wants and will let you know, like when his water bowl is low he will either bark at it or pick it up and move it, a routine will benefit him and you.
Saul is a puppy and fully in the nipping stage, especially if he very excited. He is learning that nipping is not wanted, quick verbal corrections are given. He is getting it but is still a work in progress and will need to be continued with his new people. It is a very normal at the puppy stage, but again unwanted.
Because of his nipping, if there are kids in Saul’s forever home, they will need to be 8yrs+ and well versed with understanding proper puppy play and interactions and be willing to work or train with him. They will need to work on having boundaries with the puppy as well, give Saul a safe place when needed.
Saul is starting to understand the crate, it is not his favourite as he would rather lay at your feet or on the couch beside you. He does go in on his own during the day sometimes, but only lays there for a few minutes then comes out. When we are out he does take time to settle and he will howl. Saul does eventually fall asleep, we have left him for max 3 hrs which 1 of those hours was crying. Hopefully by the time he gets to go to his forever home, he will be satisfied being in his crate while you are out. Crate training is a puppy life skill that they need to get used to and it just takes time. He does go easy to bed at night in his crate, which is in sight of us. He sleeps 7 hours through the night no problem.
Saul has been doing great with his house training, he has had only a few accidents since arriving, however we do have him out on the hour and we make sure he does his potty breaks before we come back inside. He does know to go to the door, but will sit with no vocal warnings yet. We do have a doggy door and he will go out on his own and sit at the top of the steps to go down to the yard.
Saul loves his walks, he does love to sniff but if you want him to walk by your side he will do that as well with very few reminders. When we find he is sniffing to long or just not on a good stride with the pack we give him a little strong tug and say “lets go”, he will catchup and continue with the pack. We have taken him on small trail walks, giving him some length with a very long leash which he loves. He sticks very close and responds immediately with our “lets go” command or “come” command.
Saul currently is getting about 3 small walks daily, about 15-30 minutes long. We just want him to get use to this new environment, the business of the roads and as well let him enjoy the new scents and hear the new noises along his way at his pace.
When he is ready for the big walks, he would love a few 45-90 minute walks daily. He does like to have short quick burst of runs, so if time is restricted for long walks he would love some backyard time playing fetch. As an adult dog Saul will be very energetic and as such needs active, athletic people who can make sure that he is adequately exercised. Husky’s need to run as adults, its what they were bred to do, so simple walks around the block won’t suffice. Please take into consideration the activity needs of the breed before applying and make sure that you can manage that. He will be an excellent dog for running alongside a bike, long hikes, jogging, playing ball in a fenced yard…you name it, he can do it!
Saul is a very well mannered boy and a very proud boy, loves working on commands especially cause they involved treats. We currently use different treats for different commands we are working on.
Commands: ‘Come’ is the command he is the most proud of. He hustles immediately to us and so fast, this treat is the best flavoured one. We work with this one a lot as we do have a cottage with lots of land and bush area that he loves to explore in. If he goes to a new home that has acres he will be prepared for this. ‘Sit’ is just the prettiest, looks so proud of himself. Down’ he is not good for the length, but is good for a few seconds so far. ‘Leave it’ we work on this while walking, as he likes to try and grab everything and anything that falls off the trees on the sidewalks. ‘Off’ of course is the hardest, since he does love the visitors and people so much.
We will require Saul to go to obedience training as it will help him develop a wonderful relationship with his new family. Right now Saul doesn’t show to much stubbornness however when he gets older he may and with this strong working breed a base training already started will be best for him and you.
Saul is happy to go with you everywhere. He may complain for the first few minutes in a vehicle but will settle and have a snooze. We travel two hours to our cottage and he sleeps pretty much the whole way, no sickness at all.
Being that Saul is still such a young boy and does have difficulty with his crate, we will only consider a home for him where someone is home majority of the day. Saul if alone for the majority of the day will not have the full life he wants and needs. He is a people dog and that may have something to do with the early stages of his life being alone and hungry. He wants the comfort with being with his humans. If he is alone for longer than 4hrs, he will not be the happiest dog. We are also looking for a family or persons that is fully aware of the time commitment for a puppy and the work involved. Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy property. They need constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing on anything inappropriate.
As Saul is too young to be neutered at this time, he will need to come back to our vet in Cambridge to have this done at a later date. Therefore we need a commitment from his forever family to take him to our specific vet to have him fixed when the time comes. Saul’s adoption will be conditional on this commitment. His adoption fee includes the neuter. Anyone interested in Saul will need to live within 1hr of Cambridge where our vet is located to make this feasible.
Saul is looking for his forever family with someone who will spend their time walking and playing with him, going to training class, and some who will relate with him at the end of the day. He is looking for someone who will love him unconditionally forever and provide him with a safe and happy home. If this is you Saul will be the perfect addition to your home.
