Story
ABOUT ZOOMIE & RUSTY Zoomie is a spunky 6-year-old Jack Russell mix, and his best friend Rusty is a 9-year-old Shih Tzu mix. These boys came to HAP when their owner was no longer able to care for them. Despite being in the shelter, Rusty and Zoomie remain an inseparable, spirited pair who love adventures and attention. Both are affectionate, food-motivated, and full of personality. They’re sweet with each other but show classic sibling competitiveness when it comes to getting pets. Rusty may vocalize for attention, while Zoomie is the quieter one. After playtime, they’re happy to curl up, cuddle, and even snore themselves to sleep. They’ve done well meeting new people and even thrive in our Doggy Day Out program! Here's what our volunteers had to say about them: "We had a wonderful time with Rusty and Zoomie! They were practically attached at the hip when we took them for a walk at Carousel Park. Then we took them home for toys, cuddles and treats. Rusty loved the stuffed toys we had lying around and Zoomie is a tug of war champion! After a while they started falling asleep snoring!" - Avery "Since we started taking them out 2 weeks ago, they have greatly improved on the leash and are well mannered. They settle very quickly in the car now, and are smart cookies who have learned the route we take. We even took them to a little playground and rusty is great at figuring out little obstacles. Zoomie is fantastic at sit with and without a treat, and they are both very food motivated so I’m sure they can both learn so much!" - Allison "We had a great Thanksgiving day with Rusty and Zoomie! They're the cutest little guys. They love each other but are also a little competitive, like true brothers - if you were petting one then the other one had to come by and get his fair share too. Rusty would even whimper and bark a little if he didn't get tended to immediately, but zoomie never barked. They also enjoyed all the treats except our baby carrots. Zoomie wasn't as much of a fan of the chewy stick though. We also found out that zoomie loves to play catch and even catches the toy midair sometimes! He will play catch for as long as you will throw the toy. They enjoyed exploring our backyard. And we did eventually have some (short lived) quiet time too. They are such spunky boys and I hope they find their furever home soon!" - Wes If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! This friend has just arrived to us on transport from a high-intake shelter partner! When our friends are new to us, we are often unsure of their full background. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and update their bio with more information as we learn. They are pending interactions with animals until they have been cleared by our vet. Please note that we often are unsure of house, crate, car, and leash training status upon arrival. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Story
Breed: Chihuahua mix Sex: Male Age: 2 yrs. (dob 10/27/2023) Weight: 6.9 lbs Medical Needs: Neuter date is December 9th at the DOVER BVSPCA (Horsepond Road). Keeping this appointment is a condition of adoption. Applicants must either live in Delaware, or within 1 hour of where the appointment is scheduled to be eligible to adopt this dog. (Drop off for spay is 8-8:30am– nothing to eat or drink after midnight). Housebroken: Yes. He whimpers to let you know when he's ready to use the bathroom. Crate trained: Yes. Good in the car: The only times he's been in the car was upon picking him up to transport to his current foster home and he was in a crate when going to the vet, and at that time he was in a dog carrier (and he wasn't very happy about that). Good on a leash: Yes. He enjoys walks. Energy Level: With being 2yrs old, he's been laid back, until he gets around the resident dog and then his energy level goes into high gear for "play time". Need a fenced in yard: No, with how small he is, he does not need a fenced in yard. Personally, I would never leave him alone in a fenced in yard, if you have one. Dog Friendly: Yes, he's currently in a foster home with another dog. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its new home? No, Bento does not need another dog in his new home. If there is another dog in the home, we have discovered that Bento has "resource guarding" issues. We don't know what trauma that Bento experienced before joining the GRR Family, but he does not like for anyone to take his food once it's in front of him. In his current foster home, his foster mom continues to feed him and the resident dog separately to prevent any feeding issues. Cat Friendly? Unsure, with Bento being in a home without a cat. Kid Friendly: Yes... absolutely enjoys belly rubs. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Due to his size and the "resource guarding" issue, it's recommended that Bento shouldn't be with any child under the age of 8, without close supervision. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Mr. Bento may be tiny is stature, but has a very strong personality that lets you know his feelings straight up front where I don't think he realizes he's of a tiny stature. He may look like a "purse dog", please don't attempt to place him in a "purse" or any bag. He's definitely not a fan. He enjoys being around the family as much as possible. He's willing to relax by your side, if you want to relax and watch TV or take a walk outside to enjoy a beautiful day. Don't be scared by his reverse sneeze that happens sometimes, when he gets excited, it comes out of nowhere. Unfortunately, we don't know about Mr. Bento's past life before coming to his current foster home, so his new family will definitely need to have patience with him. He is looking for a family that will love on him, adore him, and give him the needed attention for him to introduce himself, grow with his new family, and into being his most, amazing self. Fosters Location: Clayton, DE Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app. ##2565859##
