Story
Ohhh Chicken Little. This girl has main-character energy and she knows it. Once upon a winter freeze, when the streets were icy and the world felt a little too big, a tiny puppy was found wandering alone — cold, confused, and trying her very best to be brave. That brave little explorer was Chicken Little. Scooped up just in time, she traded shivers for soft blankets and discovered something wonderful: humans who keep you warm, feed you snacks, and tell you you’re a good girl. Now safe in foster care, Chicken Little is ready to find her furever home — but she’s bringing her full personality with her. She’s a classic Jack Russell Terrier through and through. That means brains, boldness, and enough energy to power a small city. She doesn’t just have zoomies — she is the zoomies. This spunky girl needs an active lifestyle and a family that understands that if she doesn’t get a job, she’ll assign herself one. (Interior decorating? Sock relocation? Supervising yard patrol? She’s versatile.) Chicken Little can be a little bossy — but in the charming, pint-sized CEO kind of way. And that face? The kind that makes you forgive absolutely everything. She’s smart as a whip and currently working on her potty training. With her quick mind and eagerness, she’s well on her way to mastering it. She would thrive with other playful, active dogs who can match her energy and keep the fun going. Cats are a little trickier — she can be very “in your face,” so a home without cats is preferred. However, with an older, confident cat and a patient adopter willing to manage introductions carefully, it could potentially work. And let’s not forget her ultra-sensitive ears. A leaf blows outside? She knows. A squirrel three blocks away blinks? She’s on it. Congratulations — you now have a built-in security system. Chicken Little survived the cold on her own, but she doesn’t have to anymore. She’s ready for a home that will keep her busy, love her fiercely, and appreciate the joyful whirlwind that she is. If you’re looking for a tiny dog with a huge personality, endless enthusiasm, and the confidence of someone who has already conquered winter — Chicken Little might just be your girl. 🐾

Story
OZZY and his brother ELVIS were born on Christmas and are almost 8 weeks and ready for adoption this week! We've got them vetted to age, and although we don't know who Dad was, we do have their Mom, who is a 19 lb floofy terrier mix, with a little longer body and shorter legs. Ozzy has a little more of his Mom's floof and is more of a low-rider stubby-legged pup like she is. Both are super playful, friendly, and fun puppies who love to snuggle once they tire themselves out. Good with dogs, cats, and school-aged kids and up. 👉 Adoption fee INCLUDES: all vetting to age (including deworming, flea & tick etc), spay/neuter and microchip (if the dog is under 6 months, alter and chip will occur after they're 6 months, covered in full at our clinic or reimbursed partially at a vet of your choosing). If the dog is older than 6 months and not yet altered, we will schedule ASAP (normally within 30 days) at our clinic . We also provide as an incentive a $60 rebate for completion of positive-based training classes. Adoption also includes lifetime support of the rescue. 💜 Please click PURPLE BUTTON above to apply or go to www.secondhanddogrescue.com/apply ! ✍ APPLICATION PROCESSING: We do most application processing virtually and dog meets will be individually by appointment with ONLY APPROVED APPLICANTS. We are not a shelter and are completely volunteer foster-based, so there is no central place to come see all of the dogs available. 📌 IMPORTANT NOTES: ** Housetraining with rescues is sometimes a work in progress and even if a dog is 100% in a foster's home, it should be expected there will be an adjustment period as a dog adapts to a new environment. This is even more true if the dog has not by chance had their altering appointment at time of adoption. ** Also, we highly recommend some form of 2-week shutdown and decompression for dogs going to a new home for best results. --> Lastly, breed guesses in rescue are just that (GUESSES!!) 99.9% of the time. We do not do DNA testing and our breed guesses are based on appearance and sometimes other traits, but we know the dog breed guessing game is a fool's errand even for those with LOTS of experience. 🗺 ADOPTION AREA: several hour radius of Rochester, NY (Canada within 3 hours IS allowed, except that young puppies need to be old enough to have gotten their rabies vaccination to cross the border - usually around 16 weeks)

Story
Lady is a 7 year old spayed, microchipped Jack Russell mix. She is housebroken, good with people and most dogs. No cats please. She's on a diet and exercise program and has lost almost 10 lbs! She is a great walker and would make a wonderful companion. Lady is currently at the Shelter Volunteers For Animals periodically pulls dogs from other shelters to free up space; this helps avoid euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals. We are able to do this through the generosity of many people such as the originating shelter staff, transporters, foster volunteers and others who help with pulling fees, vet bills and finding good homes once they are here. The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the rescues animals can range from $100 to $450 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If you are interested in any of the Rescue dogs, please Contact Us. Do not call the Shelter regarding rescue animals - they have no information about these dogs. All rescue animals are in foster homes with volunteers - NOT at the Shelter - unless otherwise noted.  Here is the adoption process:   To adopt an animal you must complete an application and be approved. There is a $100 fee for any county animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered, there is a $35 deposit which will be returned upon proof of surgery. All dogs must be licensed before leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that issue dog licenses are not open on Saturdays and Sundays. All cats must leave in a carrier.   Thank you for considering a homeless animal.January 17, 2026, 2:15 pm

Story
Meet Lizzie, a resilient survivor with the softest coat and the sweetest heart. Lizzie’s story began behind a Piggly Wiggly in Camden, AL, where she and her friends Buster and Belle were struggling to survive. Severely emaciated, covered in ticks and fleas, and frightened by the busy world around her, Lizzie’s chances looked slim. But with rescue, safety, and care, she blossomed into a healthy, happy pup. Now her true personality shines. Lizzie is endlessly snuggly and sweet, the kind of companion who loves nothing more than curling up close. Her short coat is silky soft, and her gentle nature makes her a joy to be around. Lizzie has made a full recovery and is thriving, but her heart still beats strongest when she’s near her best friend Buster. Ideally, these two inseparable companions would find a home together, where they can continue their journey side by side. If you’re ready to open your heart to a loving, resilient pup (or maybe even two), Lizzie is waiting to meet you.
