The LA city shelter is beyond capacity and is asking for help for dear petite Kaval who came in as a stray. While he has been uncomfortable with some people, he has done well with other dogs per playgroup notes and as seen in multiple video with both males and females, including but not limited to this one: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/B3-BEQNpjJc Kaval is perfect size at only 39 lbs and said to be 1 year old now. He was recently neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. A volunteer told us “when we came to the kennel door he was the sweetest little angel , so gentle and calm “. However, because he has been growling at times, likely out of fear and trust, and or just not feeling well, a chow savvy home is requested. Kaval was also noted as having bloody diarrhea shortly after coming in, which has since resolved with medicine. While he is adoptable, due to his behavior with people, the shelter has now put him on the euthanasia list and needs out asap. Shelter notice just emailed status! "Reason for euthanasia: This dog displays a very stiff body posture and is wary of new people and handling. Additionally, the animal is avoidant and growls when approached. At Risk Category: Y2 Last day to take animal: 8/29/26 Scheduled euthanasia date: 8/30/26 This animal is available for New Hope, adoption or foster." We were also given more detailed behavior and medical notes, which can be shared, and should be requested if interested in adopting or fostering. It is noted he “Walked well on leash, Mingled around the yard very appropriately, no corrections given or taken, ignored assertive intact male puppy trying to push him”. Was easy to leash, accepted pets, non reactive to other dogs passing by, please see detailed notes RESCUE ONLY for being a chow! POPCORN" is a very stunning chow boy weighing only 37 lbs and estimated to be only 2 years old. He was made Rescue Only for basically acting like most friendly chows would in a scary shelter environment. However, he can be seen sweet and calm in several videos we have, just a little shy which is to be expected. Shelter notes from state, “ 7/31/2026 Dog was a front of kennel, ears perked, tail wagging. Accepted treats, easy to leash. Walked with light pull, stop and go to sniff. No issues directing to main yard; handler attached extended line before dropping leash. Dog kept distance, exploring at quick pace, panting, chuffing. No interest in handlers, would not approach when called and only occasionally made eye contact. Dog had no reaction to another dog being walked outside of fence. Handlers continued to call to dog, attempting to coax, but dog would not approach, kept distance. Handlers were able to call dog into catch pen to retrieve leash; dog stood at gate, wagging tail, whining. Once leash was picked up, handlers walked dog back to main gate. Dog allowed some petting on top of head. Light pull on return. Dog would not enter kennel wing, pulled back and bit at leash. Handlers walked dog to outside gate, attempted to lead dog in, dog continued to pull back and thrash at leash, biting it occasionally. Would not follow treat trail. Dog yelped, whipped head. Handler gave dog a few moments to settle. Dog was panting, wagging tail. Second handler used sort board to block pathway, then used second sort board to guide dog forward as first handler applied moderate leash pressure. Dog stepped into kennel, began eating treats. Leash removed via clip lead. Dog turned towards handler, wagging tail, panting.” Even though Popcorn’s behavior notes were not bad, and he had no further evaluation, on 8/5, he was suddenly made Rescue Only alleging, “8/5/2026 15:56 Canine has shown low tolerance for handling and resistance to returning to the kennel with associated concerning behaviors. Placement with a New Hope Partner is required by close of business 8/10/26 to facilitate further behavioral evaluation and support. May be at risk for euthanasia 8/11/26 or sooner if warranted.” So sad and ridiculous! Owner could no longer care for him, said was good with small children, small dog, potty trained. please see detailed notes and sweet video RESCUE ONLY for basically being a chow! He lived with a family for the past 3 years who sadly surrendered him to the shelter after they could no longer care for him. However, they said many great things about him such as: “HE ALLOWS THE SMALL CHILD TO PET HIM. OWNER STATES THAT HE HAS NEVER SHOWN ANY AGGRESSION AROUND THE CHILD. OWNER HAS ANOTHER SMALL DOG - CHI DOG. OWNER STATES THAT THIS DOG WAS PLAYFUL WITH THE SMALL DOG AND SHOWED NO SIGNS OF AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THE OTHER DOG. OWNER STATES THAT HE IS A GOOD DOG. OWNER STATES THAT SHE FEELS HE WOULD DO GOOD IN A HOME WITH A FAMILY AND HE WOULD ALSO DO WELL AROUND SMALL CHILDREN. OWNER STATES THAT HE HAS HAD SOME TRAINING TO HELP WITH HIM NOT BEING SO AGGRESSIVE.” The owner also mentioned he lived indoor and outdoor, was potty trained, and that he loves to run around in a yard. He has no reported bites. Like many chows, he came in a bit nervous in the shelter. However, shelter notes from 8/1/2026 state, “Dog was closed outside for cleaning, curled up at front of kennel. Stood slowly, tail raised to flagged position when coaxed by handler. Handler continued to speak softly, dog appeared to settle, tail up but no longer flagged. No interest in treats. Handler opened gate, called dog by name, dog wagged tail, approached cautiously, backed away from leash. Handler attempted to lasso leash, dog retreated back. Dog would have moments of softening, wagging tail, but tensed when leash was presented. Briefly flashed teeth, then settled. Handler opened gate wider, called dog, dog approached, handler was able to secure leash with large loop. Dog exited, walked with light pull, no reaction to neighbors. No issues directing to play yard. Dog explored on own, relieved self, kept distance from handler. Handler tried calling dog, clapping hands, but dog would not look up at handler, continued to sniff around yard. Handler sat on bench, waited a few minutes, tried calling dog again. Dog had no response, only looked up if handler moved closer. Handler walked around yard, parallel to dog at a short distance. Dog continued sniffing, occasionally looked up and side-eyed handler, then continued. Handler tried getting closer to retrieve leash, dog would quicken pace and avoid handler. Handler was able to retrieve leash while dog was distracted, sniffing. Walked dog to gate. Dog tolerated light petting on back, skin-crawled. Allowed handler to place clip lead. No issues on return. Dog wagged tail, calmly sniffed a few non-reactive dogs in kennels. Entered own kennel with light guidance. Leash removed via clip lead as precaution.” Medical notes indicate owner reported an eye infection in one eye left untreated, and that he may have mild lower lid entropion that could be addressed by a rescue. Exam notes show he was calm and tolerant of exam/handling. Despite positive owner notes and okay shelter notes, Lil Bear was made Rescue Only for basically acting like most friendly chows would in a scary shelter environment. However, he can be seen sweet and calm in video we have, approaching the fence to greet a stranger.
