Meet River: A Gentle Giant with a Heart Ready to Heal 🐾 River is a 2–3 year old male Great Pyrenees with a quiet strength and soulful eyes that speak volumes. Weighing around 70 lbs, he was found as a stray in Boone County, severely matted and in need of care—likely on his own for quite some time. He’s since been shaved and is slowly regaining his dignity and grace. 🧬 True to His Pyrenees Nature: River embodies the classic traits of the Great Pyrenees: calm, sensitive, and deeply loyal. He’s good with other dogs and even cats, and while he enjoys human companionship, he’s shy and cautious—especially around new experiences. He flinches when someone reaches to pat his head, a heartbreaking sign that he may have endured past abuse. 🏡 Ideal Home for River: River will thrive in a home that understands the Pyrenees temperament: - A secure, fenced yard where he can roam and feel safe - A family with experience in the breed or large, sensitive dogs - A calm environment with older children (12+) or adults only - A canine companion would be a welcome friend River is housebroken and crate trained, though he prefers quiet freedom and gentle routines. Like many Pyrenees, he values independence but bonds deeply with those who earn his trust. 🩺 Health & Vetting: River is: - Fully vetted - Neutered and microchipped - Up to date on vaccinations - Heartworm negative and on year-round preventative 📍 Adoption Info: River is being fostered through BAARK Dog Rescue in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Story
Meet Nellie Nellie, a Great Pyrenees, joined BAARK when her owner was no longer able to care for himself, much less her. As such, she was in pretty rough physical condition when she was surrendered, but clearly had received plenty of attention and love. Nellie is estimated to be 7-8 years old and weighs about 80 lbs. When meeting new people, Nellie is a little shy at first. We believe that this is because she had very little exposure to new people when with her previous owner. However, in her foster home, with patience and, in following the lead of her new canine friends, Nellie has really blossomed. She now gives kisses and lots of tail wags when her foster mom and dad get home from work. She gets along wonderfully with dogs of all sizes. In typical Great Pyr fashion, she loves patrolling the fence line and she is especially in tune to large birds flying overhead. Her foster family appreciates her level of alert, as Nellie watches over her much smaller foster brother and sisters in the home. Nellie is housebroken and is just fine being un-crated at home by herself. Nellie joined our rescue organization back in June. She is just becoming available for adoption as she has a long recovery from a mass removal on her paw pad (benign). She has 3 toes on that paw but gets around just fine. Nellie is in overall great health. She’s spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on preventative. She’s befriended dogs of all sizes, enjoys the company of respectful children, and even gets along with cats.
