Story
Buddy is a Great Pyrenees (possibly Mix), about 3 years old. He was found lying in a ditch along the road, in Louisiana. Who knows how many drivers passed him by as he lay there, suffering for days before one person stopped to help him. He was barely able to walk, he was so emaciated and dehydrated. And it was obvious that he had a bad injury to his right hind leg.The Good Samaritan took him to her home to nurse him back to health but recognized she could not keep him. Thankfully we learned of her need for help for Buddy and, he was able to join us early this summer.Upon his arrival, Buddy was found to be heartworm positive. He’s been undergoing treatment and his final treatment is the end of August. We expect him to be cleared and heartworm-free thereafter. This is only one of the medical challenges faced by Buddy.Buddy has been doing great, gaining weight and beginning to look healthy. He currently weighs 87 lbs. He can afford to gain a few more pounds; we anticipate his idea weight to be 95 lbs.So all is good with Buddy in moving toward his heartworm-free status and his gaining weight…and strength. However, as noted above, Buddy does have a bad leg injury; he may have been hit by a car and that injury/fracture was never addressed.As such his right hind leg is “frozen” into an elevated position. An initial vet exam concluded that Buddy is not in pain due to this injury but we’d like to still have him examined by an orthopedic surgeon to be sure that keeping the leg will not cause future problems…vs amputation as another option.It seems Buddy has gotten use to the positioning of his right hind leg; he gets around fine and, now that he’s getting plenty of exercise at his foster home, his left hind leg has become much stronger and he’s become very agile with no trouble getting around. He can manage a few stairs in his home but cannot run up an entire staircase.Buddy is a true lover of nature! He loves to be outside at all times and sometimes his foster mom has trouble convincing him to come inside! As such a secure fenced yard is an absolute MUST in his forever home, so he can spend as much time as possible outside!! It would also be beneficial to allow Buddy to come in and out whenever he wants (i.e., a doggy door). Buddy does well, home alone. He is not crated but is allowed to be free in the home and is not destructive in any way.He absolutely love the attention of people especially if those people are females. As such an all-female household is best for Buddy. He seems scared of men which likely is a result of past mistreatment. Buddy is also very good, and gentle, with children.An ideal family for Buddy…Great Pyrenees experience, a female-only household, a secure fenced yard, and a willingness to allow Buddy to spend lots of time outside! And, of course, plenty of attention and love!!!Buddy is up to date on all vaccinations, and will soon be heartworm negative (last treatment end of August). He must be on year-round heartworm prevention as should all dogs . Buddy also benefits from a daily joint supplement as well as a good-quality source of omega-3’s and 6’s.
