Story
That one was too hot, and that one too cold, but Goldie is... just right! Goldie is a lab retriever mix looking for a perfect home. This girl is house trained, quiet and very cuddly. She does not appear to be destructive if left outside of a crate, but has also been willing to spend short periods in one in her foster home. Goldie walks well on a leash and seems content to hang out next to her people on the couch. She rides well in a car and loved meeting new people! Interested in adoption or fostering? Story
Sheldon is a handsome 3-1/2 year old male Chocolate Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the HSOV on November 22, 2022 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who picked him up on State Route 555 in the Cutler Ohio area. Sheldon was wearing an orange/silver reflective collar but there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on his collar .. And he was not microchipped. Sheldon has a chocolate brown short smooth coat with a white bib on his neck/chest, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, a milk chocolate nose, and short floppy ears . Sheldon has a friendly, easygoing personality and enjoyed his 15-minutes of fame when HSOV Humane Officer Fredley Tynan spent time with him for his outdoor photo session. There was an after-hours dog walk in progress, and Sheldon was very curious about other dogs that he saw being walked in the distant and seemed to want to make their acquaintance. He also 'perked up' when he saw cars being driven into the parking lot as though he expected his owner to coming to look for him. Sheldon appears to be housetrained. Sheldon weighs 59.4 lbs and walks fairly well on a leash. He has a slim trim physique and could easily carry a few more pounds. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Sheldon was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Since Sheldon was not reclaimed, he was neutered on January 11, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. Sheldon was adopted on March 25, 2023 but was returned a week or so later because he was nervous around babies (and perhaps with toddlers/small children) and shows his fear by growling, so we recommend that Sheldon be placed in a home with adults or older children. He is truly a fantastic lovable dog who will be a terrific companion with his new family. We've also learned that Sheldon does NOT do well with cats, so he should not be placed in a home where he would have contact with them. Sheldon appears to do ok with most other dogs. Sheldon went home with a foster family on February 8, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Update: Sheldon was officially adopted by his foster family on February 21, 2025. Unfortunately Sheldon was returned to HSOV on March 7, 2025 through no fault of his own since the family's landlord did not want Sheldon there because of his breed .. So very sad that Sheldon and other dogs are discriminated against in this way. Sheldon went home with another foster family on March 11, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this will be Sheldon's 'forever home'. Update: Sheldon was adopted on March 12, 2025.

Story
Sheldon is a handsome male Chocolate Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier mix who was originally brought to the HSOV on November 22, 2022 by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden who picked him up on State Route 555 in the Cutler Ohio area. Sheldon was wearing an orange/silver reflective collar but there was neither an id tag nor a dog tag on his collar .. And he was not microchipped. Sheldon has a luscious dark chocolate brown short smooth coat with snow white markings on his neck/chest/belly, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, a milk chocolate nose, and short floppy ears . Sheldon appears to be housetrained. Since Sheldon was not reclaimed, he was neutered on January 11, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine. We've also learned that Sheldon does NOT do well with cats, so he should not be placed in a home where he would have contact with them. Sheldon has become a favorite with our HSOV staff and volunteers. He has become a social butterfly who loves to snuggle with his people friends and enjoys 'butt rubs' and short walks. Sheldon is often seen sitting quietly on one of our outdoor benches with an HSOV volunteer and enjoying out-of-kennel time. Sheldon has gained some much-needed weight since we first met him in November 2022. He weighed 74.4 lbs on October 25, 2023 and looks fabulous. Sheldon walks gently on a leash. These updated photos of Sheldon were taken on October 20, 2023 after he had participated in our HSOV Halloween Mini-Photo Session. Sheldon had 'rocked' a cute Bumblebee/Honey Bee costume and looked adorable as a sweet honey bee. HSOV Humane Officer Fredley Tynan accompanied Sheldon for his Halloween pictures that day, and we took the opportunity to take 'au naturale' photos that day. Sheldon went home with a foster family on February 8, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Update: Sheldon was officially adopted by his foster family on February 21, 2025. We've also learned that Sheldon does NOT do well with cats, so he should not be placed in a home where he would have contact with them. Sheldon gets along well with most other dogs. Loud noises/crowds/new people tend to frighten him. Sheldon was fostered-to-adopt on November 10, 2023 .. Although his potential adopter loved him very much, Sheldon was returned to our shelter on December 5, 2023. That individual felt that their home was not the ideal one for Sheldon since he was exhibiting severe separation anxiety issues, and the family was away from the home too much to fulfill Sheldon's need for being with his people. Sheldon tended to get into mischief (only when he was alone too long) and chew/destroy items in the home. These photos were taken on December 6, 2023 when Sheldon was spending time in our front office with his people friends and assisting shelter staff and greeting visitors .. before being returned to his former kennel. Sheldon is looking for a home (without feline friends) where he could take long walks with his family and snuggle up next to his new best friends .. and where he would not be left alone very long. If you believe you have the perfect home for Sheldon, our HSOV Kennel Techs/Staff/Volunteers would love to introduce you to this awesome dog. Sheldon went home with a foster family on February 8, 2025 who plans to adopt him if all goes well. Update: Sheldon was officially adopted by his foster family on February 21, 2025. Story
Knox (fka Hagrid) is a handsome one-year old male Mastiff/Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on February 24, 2024 by a Good Samaritan who had found him on Boulevard Drive in Belpre Ohio the preceding evening. Hagrid was wearing a collar but, unfortunately, there was neither an ID tag nor a dog license tag on his collar ... And he was not microchipped. Hagrid has a black short smooth coat with white markings on his chest, white toes on his paws, a long tail, and a gorgeous face with dark brown 'teddy bear' eyes, a chubby muzzle, and short floppy ears, This big guy has a sweet, easygoing personality. Hagrid was quite the gentleman when HSOV Kennel Tech Kathryn Rea (Kat) gave him extra TLC while he posed for preliminary photos in front of his kennel in the Holding Area (where new intakes are housed). Hagrid appeared to be ok other dogs in nearby kennels (who were constantly 'talking' to him). Hagrid just wagged his tail and made a quiet effort to make their acquaintance/ Hagrid weighs 76 lbs and is fairly strong on a leash (merely because of his large size). He was a pushover for 'good boy' treats when we were enticing him to go back in his kennel, and he quickly followed the scent of bacon strips which were waiting for him atop his soft pile of blankets. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Hagrid will be held for three days so that his family will have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership. Hagrid went home with a foster family on February 28, 2024 who planned to adopt him after he was neutered .. But Hagrid did not get along with the foster family's dog, so Hagrid (now known as Knox) came back to HSOV on March 15, 2024 and is available for adoption. Knox went home with a foster family on December 24, 2024 who plans to adopt him after he is neutered. Knox was returned to HSOV on December 27, 2024 due to an unfortunate incident and was placed on a mandated 10-day bite quarantine. Update: Knox was neutered on January 13, 2025 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Story
Hoss is a handsome 2-year old male Labrador Retriever mix who was brought to the HSOV on April 30, 2024 by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff who had picked him up on Brush Road in the Marietta Ohio area. Hoss was not wearing a collar, and he was not microchipped. This good-looking boy has a black short smooth coat with a patch of white on his chest, white toes on his paws, a long tail, and a sweet face with dark brown eyes, a splash of white on his muzzle, and large floppy ears. These photos of Hoss were taken on the afternoon on May 3, 2024 when HSOV Volunteer Emma Dahlgren accompanied him outdoors during a break in the rain which had deluged the mid-Ohio Valley during the past week. Hoss was a well-behaved boy who looked to Emma for guidance and (literally) leaned on her for reassurance (smile). Hoss weighs 58 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Emma. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Hoss was held for three days so that his family would have an opportunity to reclaim him with proof of ownership .. But nobody called or came looking for him.
