Little Boomer, a 10-year-old, 8-lb Maltese, entered his foster home a week ago skittish and scared. His foster family has been gently working with him to build trust, and he’s responding beautifully. Just a week ago, he would run and hide when anyone approached him. Now, he waits patiently, knowing that being held feels safe and secure. When his foster mom picks him up, he nuzzles his little face into her neck and his whole body relaxes. Boomer, affectionately called “Mouse” by his foster family, originally came from Mississippi where he was used for breeding until he was no longer valuable. Now he’s looking for a quiet, loving home where he can finally receive all the love he deserves. Boomer is wonderful with other dogs. His foster family has three gentle pups, and he gets along with everyone. He would love a home where someone is around more often than not, as he does get a little sad when his people first leave. He’d be happy with other calm dogs, but he would also do just fine as an only pet if someone is home most of the time—such as someone who works from home or a retiree. When Boomer first arrived at his foster home in Rhode Island, he chose to sleep on a dog bed on the floor next to his foster mom and dad. After a couple of days, his favorite place became a pillow quietly tucked between them. He’s a very considerate roommate and doesn’t make a peep all night. Boomer is doing well with house training, though he’s not a fan of going out when it’s wet. On rainy days, he’s happy to use puppy pads. The ideal home for Boomer will be patient and understanding—people who will give him the time he needs to continue building trust and won’t take it personally as he decompresses from a difficult past. Boomer is up to date on all his vetting and is neutered and microchipped. Name: Reina Nicknames: Reina Marie Breed: Maltese/Maltese mix Sex: Female Age: ~7 Weight: 10 lbs. Before OMD/Medical: Animal Control seized 37 dogs from a hoarding situation (dogs were kept in a barn in filthy conditions) and reached out for help. Reina was one of the last dogs left at animal control from the case and we took her and her housemate, Pancake, into rescue. She saw our vet right away for a mammary tumor and suspected UTI, but x-rays revealed a massive bladder stone that took up almost her entire bladder (we can only imagine the discomfort she had been in..and for goodness knows how long!). She had the mammary tumor removed (and confirmed benign) and stone also removed, along with a dental cleaning. Energy Level: Low to medium. Overall very mellow, but has moments of play and zoomies. Descriptors: Cuddly. Affectionate. Loving. Sweet. Shy when meeting new people, but warms up quick once she feels comfortable. Velco level: High. Wants to sit beside you or on your lap at all times. What we love most: The way she continuously waves her front paws in the air when she is very excited. Her before-bed-time zoomies on the bed. How she loves to be loved. What she loves most: Snuggling with her people. Being outside (although she tries to eat everything in the grass in a rooting fashion). Barking at the TV if she hears a dog. What she doesn’t love: Being left alone(read: she will bark for a bit, and she would not be a good fit for a shared walls environment). The car. Moonlights as: A Seal when excited, an anteater when out in the yard. Basic commands: None tbh, but she knows her name! House trained: Not totally (unsurprising, given her history as a hoarding dog and with long-term bladder stones) but making progress! She does ngo outside and sometimes on pads, but will also go on rugs Crate trained: Nope. Reina does not like to be crated, and is currently left out when alone. Dogs: She loves all the dogs in her foster home, but she needs to eat separately and has been known to resource guard foster mom's lap. Kids: We think she would be just fine with dog savvy kids. Cats: Yes as long as the cat is dog-savvy. Currently fostered with cats and, overall, does very well, but they do get her worked up at times Ideal home: A family who will continue her prescription food to prevent recurring bladder stones. A family who is happy to treat her like a little princess and share their laps. Preferably a home where her people are home more often than away. Everything is new for Reina, so a patient home would be ideal. Reina is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and microchipped. In his foster home, Waffle lives in the midst of a busy, loving household that includes a variety of dogs, cats, and an 11-year-old child. He has settled into the rhythm of family life beautifully and is described as an easygoing, gentle little presence. He enjoys toys, likes to play once he feels comfortable, and is happiest when he can simply be near his people and part of the everyday moments. He would be a wonderful fit for a calm home where the love flows freely and lap-dog love is welcome. With other dogs, Waffle is polite and thoughtful when meeting them and tends to take his time before jumping into play. Once he’s comfortable though, his playful side comes out and he enjoys toys and low-key fun with his canine friends. He seems to appreciate other dogs who respect his space and let friendships develop naturally rather than rushing him. Waffle is a sweet souls, which means new environments and unfamiliar people can feel overwhelming at first. When he is in a new setting, similar to when he arrives at his new home, he may go slow but in no time he will show just how much he leans on the comfort of people. Once he has a chance to settle and feel safe, his soft side comes out and he is happy to climb into a lap and accept affection. With a little patience and time to warm up, he will show the sweet, affectionate personality his foster family knows so well.
