This brave little guy was rescued from the streets of Detroit, matted, emaciated, battling a nasty respiratory infection, and full of tapeworms and heartworms. But that was Act I. Now, in his foster home, Hamlet is rewriting his story with courage, charm, and a newfound zest for life! At just 17 pounds, Hamlet may be small, but his heart is enormous (even if it’s still healing from those pesky heartworms). He’s a half Shih Tzu, half hot dog, a long little dude with even longer cuddles to give. While he’s on exercise restriction during his heartworm treatment, that hasn’t stopped his playful spirit from shining through. He plays by batting at your hands, pawing for attention, and giving playful nibbles. He’s discovering toys (though squeaky ones are still a bit suspicious) and is head over paws in love with Kong’s filled with peanut butter or wet food. Hamlet is also a total foodie, so be sure to keep the counters, tables, and trash cans clean, or he’ll happily volunteer for cleanup duty! Hamlet is doing well with crate training and working hard on his potty manners. He’s still figuring out where the right potty spots are, but with consistency and encouragement, he’ll learn fast. He’s even learning that he doesn’t need to guard his food anymore. He’s realizing that love and meals are here to stay. Most importantly, Hamlet adores people. He’s the definition of a lap dog and loyal shadow, whether you’re cooking, watching TV, or brushing your teeth, he’ll be right there, keeping you company. You’ll never have to do anything alone again! Hamlet is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, which includes a few injections and continued crate rest to ensure he heals safely. The rescue will cover all medical costs for his treatment. His future family just needs to provide the love, care, and patience he deserves while he finishes getting healthy. If you’re looking for a silly, loving, and loyal companion, Hammy is ready to wiggle his way into your heart (and definitely onto your lap).  Click here to watch a video of Hamlet - ADOPTION PENDING.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal. Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed. The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label. Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by. December 24, 2025, 3:11 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.UPDATE: Bella 2 yr old Bichon / Maltese, potty pad trained, loves to play with toys. Bella is a jumper! She can jump baby gates with no problem, she stands and walks on her hind feet. Meet the Quartet of Cuteness!   Bella, Nala, Olaf and Max are all Bichon Frise / Maltese mixes.  They may be a mom, dad and two offspring but we aren't certain.  What we do know is they all came from the same home.  Their owner died and the family was unable to keep them.  Each one has a distinct personality:  Bella is described as an 'attention hog', while Nala is more laid back and will not seek attention, but if you are willing to give it she will happily accept it.  Max seems more outgoing than Olaf, who prefers at this point to 'observe' his world.  All are said to be good with other dogs and children. All will need time to adjust to a new home and routine.  Even though they are said to be good with other dogs and children, they have only lived together, so all will need slow and proper introductions to children and other dogs.  We don't know how they are with cats.  They all need basic training, including potty training.  Vet appointments for needed vaccines and spay/neuter are being done soon.  Because of their breed, each will require ongoing grooming, an additional cost to consider. We know these littles won't be with us for long so if interested in adopting any of them please apply soon.     Happy Days Dog & Cat Rescue requires a Spay/Neuter Contract by the adopter if puppies and kittens in our care are too young for sterilization at the time of adoption. This is a form the adopter signs at the time of adoption, confirming that they will get the pet spayed/neutered by a certain date. HDDCR holds a deposit [$50 for dogs, $25 for cats] in addition to the adoption fee until we receive proof from a veterinarian that the dog or cat was spayed/neutered by the date stipulated on the Spay/Neuter Contract. The deposit will be refunded to the adopter if spay/neuter was done according to the Spay/Neuter Contract signed by the adopter. Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue microchips all dogs and cats before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the shoulder blades and are another form of identification should the animal get lost. The microchips are registered to Happy Days Dog and Cat Rescue. The microchip is transferred to the adopter once the adoption is complete. The adopter is responsible for a one-time $15 microchip enrollment fee, paid at the time of adoption.  Microchips are enrolled with AKC Reunite.    Dogs and Cats still need to have collar with tags should they get lost.
