Story
Meet Oakley, our resident House Pony
Oakley came to us when his owner had to move into a nursing home, and we somehow managed to make room for all 134 pounds of him. We suspect Oakley may be part English Mastiff which helps explain both his impressive size and his calm, steady presence.
Now let’s talk age. Oakley’s vet records say he is 12 years and 7 months old. His mobility, playfulness, vertical jump, and teeth suggest he’s more in the 9 to 10 range. Oakley believes age is more a suggestion than a fact.
Oakley has no mobility issues. He can jump, run, and manage stairs without trouble. He is used to living in a home with carpet. Slippery floors make him uneasy because keeping all four giant paws under him can be tricky on slick surfaces. Area rugs or wall to wall carpeting are his idea of four paw drive and help him feel confident.
Our big guy is on a weight loss journey, mostly because he doesn’t have thumbs and therefore cannot open food containers. The good news is he has already lost over 10 pounds and is doing great. His ideal weight is probably about 95 pounds. He has had a full blood panel done, and everything supports continuing his slow, steady progress. Oakley also has about 10 lumps, which we believe are lipomas, they do not slow him down or dampen his spirit.
Oakley loves people and attention. He is used to having someone around most of the time. Oakley doesn’t try to climb into laps. He respects both physics and furniture warranties. He does love leaning into hugs and backing up politely for butt scratches. He does well with other dogs and is very respectful of them.
When it’s time to relax, Oakley is all about soft, sofa-sized dog beds. The bigger and squishier, the better. He’s also a quiet guy who hardly ever barks, preferring to communicate through meaningful eye contact and gentle leaning.
Oakley enjoys wandering around outside and would love a fenced yard where he can patrol, sniff, and enjoy life at a calm, dignified house-pony pace.
If you’re looking for a gentle giant with excellent manners who just wants love, rugs, and a very large comfy bed, Oakley is ready to move in.
Oakley is housetrained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and heartworm tested. If you’d like to meet Oakley, please fill out an adoption application at www.furfunrescue.org. If you have questions about Oakley you can email rox@furfunrescue.org or call 319-929-6657.
