For inquiries email lynne@compactcaninerescue.org Fee: $500 Location: Chesapeake, Virginia Meet Preston! Preston is a 17 pound, male, poodle mix. He is a very sweet, active guy. He was surrendered to the shelter in Norfolk, adopted, and returned due to work constraints. He was neutered on Monday, August 17. He also had a dental cleaning. Preston is ready for adoption. He would be best served in an active home so he can enjoy walks, and someone home during the day. He enjoys walking and a fenced yard would be a plus so he can enjoy sniffaris in the yard! While it was a difficult decision for her previous family, its clear that Remi is ready to find a loving home where she can truly thrive. Though shes still new and were getting to know her personality more each day, one thing is already certainRemi is incredibly sweet and gentle. She does have some cloudiness in her eyes, but she navigates her surroundings well, and her foster mom does not believe she is fully blind. Remi is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines, so shes ready for her forever family. She has a great appetite (she loves mealtime!) and is making steady progress with house training. She is crate trained, sleeps peacefully through the night in her own bed, and has a calm, quiet natureshe rarely barks. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and has even done well with a rabbit in her foster home, showing her gentle and easygoing temperament. Story
For inquiries email lynne@compactcaninerescue.org Fee: $400 Location: Suffolk, VA Update 5/25/2025:Chester remains happy and is ready for adoption Foster mom says, he is absolutely the easiest boy I have fostered. Hes happy and he loves everyone! He is a joy!   Meet Chester! He is a sweet senior poodle (mix) from the Chesapeake Animal Shelter. He is a sweet little old man looking for a warm lap and all the love he can handle! He was originally in a shelter and adopted to a family but ended up as a stray again. Now he is safe in our rescue and looking for a place to retire. He will need to see an eye specialist and the primary vet then he will be available for adoption. He is vision impaired but he doesnt let that get him down. He is a go with the flow kind of dude! Chester had his dental Monday, May 18th and came through with flying colors. Foster mom said he slept through the night, got up and took his meds like a champ then settled back down for a post op senior snooze! Chester is a very spry little man. What he lacks in vision he gained in heart. He is very loving. His tail wags all the time. Now that his dental is completed and his mouth is feeling so much better, he is loving life. He's just the perfect boy according to foster mom! Chester does have a low functioning thyroid. He is currently on medication for this and will need to remain on it for life. The medication costs about $3 a month from Chewy. He is also on eye drops for a few weeks. He will return to the eye specialist to see if he will need them forever. Chester is the victim of neglect. If someone would have taken him to the vet as a puppy, he most likely would not be blind. The eye specialist said her guess would be he had distemper as a puppy which can cause blindness. Routine vaccines can prevent so many unnecessary issues in dog. Please use this example as a reminder to vaccinate, spay/neuter, microchip, and test for heartworm disease. Simple testing and routine vet care can keep your dog healthy and happy for years to come. Please follow us on social media for the most up to date photos and information. Story
Darla was at a local shelter after being a stray. She's an estimated 2 years old and 12lbs. She looks like mini poodle mixed with schnauzer or yorkie. Update: vet just said Shipoo. 😊I got her out of that environment and started working on housebreaking and her puppy like mouthiness. She is doing great with both and takes direction well. I got her groomed so she looks and feels better. Darla is a very sweet girl. She likes to be near you. Rides great in the car. Good on her leash walks. Comes when called. With continued routine and guidance she'll be a wonderful companion. She's quiet and calm most of the time but does get the zoomies. She does well with other dogs and cats. She would like a home where her people are there most of the time or would like to take her along on their outings. Let me know if you think she's the girl for you!

Story
Meet Thatcher !! The neglect this poor dog suffered is infuriating. We are so thankful he’s a happy boy now and not holding a grudge against humans after the way they treated him!! Thatcher is a 1 year old, male. He is said to be a Golden Retriever and Poodle mix. He weighs 33 pounds and is likely full grown. He will be neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of his adoption. He is thankfully Heartworm negative and on preventatives. “Doodles” ARE NOT HYPOALLERGENIC!! This is a common misconception with the doodle craze. They generally have a mixed hair type of both parents. Sadly many lose their homes when despite they claims, they are allergic to them. They are a mix breed and carry genetics from both parents. He does not shed as much as a regular dog but he does still shed. This guy came to us is absolutely disgusting condition. His hair was so badly matted for so long he looked obese. He had poop and urine matted deep in layers throughout his fur. His feet were swollen from standing in urine that absorbed into the matted fur on his feet. The kind of thing that happens when a dog is confined in an area and made to stand in feces and urine. It’s so hard to understand how anyone could do this. Thankfully he is leaving that hell behind him. He was pulled from the shelter and driven straight to our amazing grooming partner Amy at Pawpular Pets. There he was completely shaved and afterwards he immediately turned into the happiest puppy. Frolicking around the grooming office like he knew he had just been given a new life. We can’t thank them enough for helping us save these abused and neglected dogs!! Thatcher is a a very happy, fun loving guy. He’s easily excitable and has a lot of energy but he’s so sweet. You can tell he’s grateful to have a real life now. Overall he’s an excellent pup. He loves all people but men seem to be his favorite. His foster dad hung the moon in the sky according to Thatcher LOL He is doing well with his house manners and training. He is great in the car. He does pull a lot on the leash still due to being so excited to see everything and greet everyone. He has been really good with his potty training. We suspect he was left kenneled for long periods of time and made to pee and poop on himself. He has never gone potty in his crate here but he still barks for about 15 mins when first put in. Poor guy still hasn’t fully figured out he won’t be left in there forever. He is however learning and doing better each day. Due to this and his energy level he would not be good in an apartment. He really needs a yard to run in. Thatcher is fine with other dogs but doesn’t care much about them. He’s fine with or without a doggie friend. He loves people more than anything. He’s happy and friendly when meeting any dogs and has never shown any aggression toward them. He has never been around cats so we are unsure how he would do. He is sweet and loving to everyone including kids however he’s probably best with older kids. It seems like he missed out on a lot of puppy training. He does jump all over people when excited. He is also still learning not to play by mouthing peoples hands. Those things may bother small kids. Thatcher has a fairly high energy level. He’s easily excitable and gets hyped up at times. He’s super excited about life and playing. He absolutely loves to run around the yard or play with toys. Playing with balls and playing fetch are his favorite things. He also loves being stuck to you doing whatever you’re doing. His new family should be prepared to exercise him each day and keep his mind busy. He’s very smart and learns fast. He would really need a fenced in yard as he has a lot of zoomies and loves to run. Thatcher has not had any issues sharing toys or treats with humans or other dogs. He was also a good boy for both the vet and the groomer. He’s a very loving boy that will make an excellent companion for someone willing to give him lots of playtime and help perfect his training. ♦️GROOMING- “Doodles” are a mix of two breeds and despite the hype they generally have hair from both dogs they are bred from. This causes terrible matting and means they require lots of brushing. They also usually need to be professionally groomed at least every 6 weeks. If you aren’t willing to provide the time and finances toward his grooming please pick a different dog to adopt ♦️ Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (He will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message VillageDogResource@gmail.com directly with questions or to get an application. ***For faster response and to see more pics please visit our facebook page
