Story
Rufus and several other Chorkie/Shihtzu type mixes were rescued from terrible living conditions. They lived in an outside pen in the dirt, mud & feces. Animal control was able to get the owners to surrender the dogs. They were all smelly and covered in caked on dirt. After a good warm bath and lots of scrubbing they felt so much better and was so happy. They were taken to the vet for a check up and shots. Rufus is playful and social, good with people and other dogs. He has not been around any cats that we know of. Rufus is about 1 year old and just 10 pounds. Please help Rufus find the loving home he deserves. We do NOT ship our animals. All adoptive families must travel to us to meet their adoptive dog/cat. Applicants must live within a 2 hour radius from Sparta/Andover (07871/07821). Please understand that we are an animal shelter and thus unable to say whether the dogs are housebroken as they are not in homes. Story
Chloe is the sweetest tiniest little schnauzer girl who has been through a lot in her young life. She is epileptic and suffered from some violent cluster seizures that went untreated for a while, making them a bit more complicated to get under control. She had some reverse reactions to some of the seizure medications and sedatives after seizuring and took a while to calm down and return to normal, but now she’s been stable after a full neuro work up and MRI to rule out other underlying conditions. She does have a slight deformity to her skull that may have been causing some of the issues when her brain was inflamed from seizing. But since adjustment of her meds she’s bounced back and no further seizures. She’s the sweetest tiny little schnauzer, 10lbs, loves to cuddle, plays with other dogs and is just perfect. She does require medication longterm every 8 hours so needs someone with a consistent schedule home more often than not who will be diligent about her care. Email njwoof@cs.com if you are committed and would like to adopt our sweet perfect little schnauzer girl 😍 Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Schnauzer lovers, meet Macy 🥰 This very special girl was used for breeding her whole life and initially terrified of everything. But once she bonds and feels safe, the cuddly playful spunky schnauzer comes out. She’s still working on housebreaking and learning to walk on a leash, but she watches and copies the other dogs around her and definitely needs at least one other little doggie friend in the household to guide her as she adjusts to a real home. Preferably another schnauzer, she definitely knows her own kind. She’s a tiny girl only 10lbs, has only 3 teeth left in her mouth due to premature dental disease we commonly see in puppymill rescues, and is probably around 6 years old. She’s looking for a calm adult home that will keep her safe and make sure she doesn’t spook and have a chance to bolt and get loose especially as she’s adjusting, and give her time to bond and trust her people. It’s hard to tell unless her coat is shaved shorter, but she has cool blue Merle markings on her back and very soft fur that’s great for cuddling. Story
Meet Choco! This little 4 year old schnauzer/Shih Tzu mix (according to his owner) is a cute tiny lion-hearted little one who thinks he’s much bigger than his 9lbs. He was surrendered because of moving/landlord issues through no fault of his own. Choco sometimes barks and acts fierce at first but quickly bonds and then is a cuddly little guy who enjoys watching tv and playing with his family, a loyal and lovable little companion. He is non-shedding and needs regular grooming He’s been neutered and updated on shots and is ready for a forever home deserving of his devotion. Story
We love a schnauzer, and we love a challenge, so Hunter is lucky he ended up with us! If he had gone to the city shelter as planned, things definitely would not have gone well for him 😞 This 7 year old has been quite a project and we have been working with him behind the scenes for the past few weeks as we try to figure each other out. He came to us a matted terrified screaming snapping mess from a home in the Bronx. They took him in when he was left abandoned tied to a pole a couple years ago but couldn’t really take care of him either. He shut down and starved himself for several days before finally taking some chicken from us- we can usually make friends with even the most aggressive and feral schnauzers pretty quickly but he has been most challenging by far that we have ever had. We had to have him completely sedated to be shaved and he wouldn’t let us pet him for weeks, but he finally is starting to trust and give us a happy greeting and letting us pet his head and shaved-off whiskers. His saving grace is that he’s more comfortable with dogs than people and has even started playing and flirting with them, so he’s finally learning we aren’t so scary if the other dogs like us. He’s gentle and sweet with dogs of all sizes so we know despite the fierce show he puts on toward people, deep down he’s not a bad guy, just terrified and has been let down by humans over and over again. We still can’t pick him up and petting has to be on his terms, and he panics about leashes/collars going over his head but we will continue to go at his pace and on his terms. He is still very much a work in progress but we see a lot of potential in him and he’s much more relaxed and happy around the other dogs at least so we will continue to give him time to figure out his place in the world. If you also love a project schnauzer, have a friendly dog or pack of dogs, and would be interested in giving him unconditional love (at a distance to start), respect, and understanding for life, please reach out to us at njwoof@cs.com. Until then he will remain in foster with us in Northern NJ as we continue to work to earn his trust and we will continue to post updates on this scared little boy 💜 When you support our rescue, in addition to helping the many sweet adoption-ready dogs we take in get vet care to prepare them for homes, you also help us give the gift of time, space, and acceptance to some of the most traumatized little dogs like Hunter. Dogs who have been disappointed, abused, neglected, or misunderstood and aren’t quite ready for society, but are just as deserving of a second chance Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Rocco! This special complicated little guy is about 4 years old, less than 15lbs and some type of floofy terrier/poodle type mix we are guessing. He may bark and put on a tough act when meeting new people, but is lovable and happy once he bonds and loves walks and car rides with his favorite staff. He prefers to dine alone and is looking for a calm adult home with people who will give him his space and let him come over for attention on his terms. He was never socialized with other dogs either and will loudly try to scare them away first before they can scare him. Medically, he's also a complicated little dude. His owners never brought him to a vet, even when he had a severe back injury and was temporarily paralyzed. Luckily with rest he was able to mostly recover on his own from a suspected disc injury, but is still a bit ataxic and wobbly in his hind legs. He does best walking on grass and softer surfaces with traction, and shouldn't be allowed to jump on and off furniture or do stairs as there is more of a change of re-injuring his back. He's had some GI issues on and off as well and was diagnosed with IBD after an endoscopy and GI biopsies: he's doing much better on a strict prescription diet and medications now and is well-managed We know this guy isn't an easy sell... he's not perfect, but the bond that comes with taking the time to get to know and love quirky little dogs like him is extra meaningful. If you can be that special person for Rocco, please submit an application to meet him Primary Color: White Secondary Color: Grey Age: 4yrs 7mths 1wks
