Story
Meet Teddy & Tilly ❤️
Teddy and Tilly are an inseparable pair of 8 year old brown Newfoundlands looking for a very special forever home together.
These two sweet Newfys came into rescue after spending much of the past three years living outdoors, including a period of significant neglect. Despite everything they have experienced, they have retained the wonderful, gentle Newfoundland temperament the breed is known for. Most importantly, they have each other.
Their bond is incredibly strong. Tilly often looks to Teddy for reassurance, and when she feels uncertain or skittish, she will move close to his side. Teddy, in turn, seems comforted by having Tilly nearby. After developing such a strong social bond through difficult circumstances, they truly are a package deal and will need to be adopted together.
They are now safe in foster care and beginning to discover what life can be like when they are treated with patience, kindness, and love.
Teddy is a gentle, affectionate boy who weighs about 90 pounds. When he was rescued, he was almost completely matted and needed to be shaved down. His beautiful coat will take several months to grow back, so he currently needs a coat to help keep him warm. As is sadly common with aging large breed dogs, Teddy is experiencing some changes in his gait, but is under the care of a veterinary team to help. This big boy has a very sweet way of showing affection. He likes to burrow his head into you, as though he is saying thank you for being kind to him. He also enjoys gentle belly rubs.
Tilly is a beautiful girl who weighs about 123 pounds and is currently working on a healthy weight loss plan. She needed only a partial shave and was able to keep most of her lovely coat. She has some dental disease, but she is currently able to eat kibble. Tilly can be a little skittish at times and finds comfort staying close to Teddy. She often follows his lead and clearly feels safer with him nearby. Once she feels comfortable, Tilly enjoys gentle human attention and may offer a couple of very sweet dog kisses as her way of saying hello.
What we have learned so far: Although these two spent much of their recent lives outdoors, they have shown some encouraging signs that they may be able to transition to being indoor dogs with patient training and consistency.
They did wonderfully during their van ride to foster care. Once inside the home, they were eager to explore and immediately ventured beyond the sunroom into the rest of the house. No accidents have occurred so far, although their previous owner reported that Tilly had urinated on an area rug. House training is therefore still under evaluation, and she will continue to have opportunities to practice being indoors.
Their comfort with crates is also under evaluation. Because of Teddy's hind end weakness, transportation will need some consideration. He cannot currently get into a sedan, and it would be difficult for Tilly as well. A van with a low floorboard has worked well for both of them.
At this stage, they appear most comfortable with access to a smaller, securely fenced outdoor area and a large doghouse they can share. With time, patience, and appropriate training, their foster family will continue learning about them and their likes and dislikes. Their have yet to be around children, as there aren't any in their foster home. They have had several days to decompress and settle into foster care, and further observation will help us better understand what type of family environment will be the best fit for them- as we learn how they are w dogs, cats, kids, other dogs, crate and house training.
If you have room in your heart and home for two gentle Newfys who are just beginning their next chapter, Teddy and Tilly would love to meet you.
