Story
**Cody, a male Dachshund-Corgi mix. Charlie and Cody are gentle, reserved brothers, about 13 months old, and both have been neutered. They arrived at the shelter with their two sisters and their mother. After being separated from the females, the brothers became very close. Now, they are showing more affection and are starting to enjoy life in the Pacific Northwest. Cody weighs 15 pounds. Cody is a little more shy than Charlie and is slowly learning to trust people. We can now gently stroke his face, but he is still getting used to being touched. Cody's daily routine includes regular feeding times, rest periods, and gentle playtime with his brother and other dogs at the rescue center. He spends much of his day relaxing in a comfortable spot, then goes outside to the fenced yard with the other dogs to explore, sniff, run, play, and receive quiet socialization from the staff and volunteers. Cody is safe, well-fed, comfortable, up to date on his vaccinations, and has no known health problems. All five dogs from this family are ready to find new homes. Cody is cautious but also curious. He loves having another dog as a friend and will follow that dog everywhere. Cody has always lived with other dogs, first with his mom and siblings, and now with other rescue dogs. While he is shy at first, we believe he will become more confident with one-on-one time with patient people who want to help him build trust. It helps if you have experience with shy rescue dogs and are willing to let him grow at his own pace. For adopters, we recommend establishing a consistent routine so he feels secure, providing a quiet place where he can relax, and gently introducing him to new people and experiences. Allowing Cody to approach you at his own pace and rewarding him for trying new things, such as taking treats or exploring new areas, will help him gain confidence over time. Cody has settled in at the rescue center. Since there are many wild animals nearby, we have not been able to train Cody to use a harness or go for walks on a leash yet. Once in a new home, Cody will need a gentle introduction to a harness and leash, starting indoors or in a secure yard to help him feel comfortable. Adopters should be prepared to take leash training slowly and use positive reinforcement. Many shy dogs need several weeks to adjust to wearing a harness and walking on a leash, so it is important to go at Cody's pace and celebrate small steps. We will provide guidance, tips, and resources to help with Cody's leash and harness training, and our team is available to answer questions during the transition. We would love it if the brothers could be adopted together into a home with a fenced yard, so they have a safe place to go outside and can learn to walk on a harness and leash. A securely fenced yard is required for Cody's adoption, as it helps ensure his safety while he builds confidence and explores. If you already have a friendly dog who can mentor Cody, he will do fine without Charlie. Cody really needs another dog for friendship and mentoring. In their foster home was a larger, very gentle dog whom the boys befriended and followed everywhere. If you feel your home may be suitable but do not have a fenced yard, please reach out to us to discuss exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Cody may be shy at first, but he is curious and wants to connect with people. Cody loves treats and will take them from your hand. Cody also enjoys being spoken to and responds well to a gentle voice. With time, patience, and love, Cody will become a loyal companion. We prefer adopters who have experience with shy or untrained dogs or who are open to guidance to help the Cody adjust to his new home. Our rescue offers a range of support and resources to help adopters through the transition, including advice by phone or email, check-in calls after adoption, printed and digital training guides, and ongoing guidance from our experienced staff. We are here to answer any questions and offer help as you get to know Cody, so you can feel confident as he settles in. We are not sure if Cody has been around children, so we suggest a home without kids. The Corgi-Dachshund mix, also known as a “Dorgi,” was first bred by Queen Elizabeth of the UK. Because they have a prey drive, they should not live with small animals or cats. *Adopting Cody: The adoption fee for Cody is $450. (If you adopt both Charlie and Cody together, the fee is 595), which includes neutering, all vaccines, and a microchip. After we receive your application, someone from our team will contact you to talk about Cody and answer any questions. We may also set up a virtual or in-person home visit to make sure it is a good fit for you and Cody. If all goes well, we will help you with the final steps of the adoption process.
