Meet Aerie...better known around here as "Meef."
Current Club Membership: Girls Club Only.
Aerie (better known as Meef) is looking for a very special home.
This sweet 6 year old hound has made incredible progress in foster care, but she is still healing emotionally. Because she is extremely fearful of men and currently will not eat when one is present, a calm, female-only home is strongly preferred while she continues building confidence and regaining healthy weight.
Aerie is not the dog for most families. She is looking for a quiet home where life is predictable, voices are gentle, and no one expects her to be brave before she's ready.
Please read carefully before applying.
A female only home is strongly preferred. Meef is currently very fearful of men and will not eat if a man is present. Since she is still regaining healthy weight, this is an important consideration.
Aerie is most comfortable outdoors during the quiet overnight and early morning hours. Busy sidewalks, neighborhood activity, loud vehicles, and daytime commotion overwhelm her. Right now, her favorite walks happen when the world is asleep.
Loud voices, shouting, frequent visitors, and noisy gatherings are not a good fit for Aerie. When frightened, she does not become aggressive. She withdraws, hides, and waits for the environment to feel safe again.
She would love another calm dog to show her the ropes, but she shows some food based resource guarding and keeping meal times separated is sufficient. Aerie does not understand toys and does not think they are something important.
Because Aerie has shown a strong interest in chasing small animals, a cat free home is recommended.
She currently does best on soft foods like roasted turkey and chicken; she will eat some softened high quality kibble, but it is not her favorite. Aerie came to us underweight by about 15 lbs and weight gain is very important. A detailed journal will be provided to help her new family continue her progress.
Aerie has never been left home alone since entering foster care, so her comfort with being by herself is unknown. Any alone time should be introduced gradually. Because Meef follows her nose with remarkable determination and can become startled in unfamiliar situations, she should always be walked on secure equipment. A properly fitted harness and collar are recommended.
Aerie doesn't seek comfort when she's frightened. She creates distance. The greatest gift you can give her is allowing her to discover that you're safe on her own timeline.
If you're looking for the life of the party, Meef isn't your girl. If you're looking for a gentle soul who will slowly give you her whole heart, she just might be.
She doesn't need a family willing to "fix" her....she needs one willing to understand her.
