Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hi, I’m Marble. I’m a shy, soft-hearted girl who’s still discovering just how safe and fun the world can be. I may not show my full personality right away, but once I feel comfortable, my sweet and playful side starts to shine through. I came from a home with many dogs, and when I first arrived here I was very timid. I’ve been through a lot, so I’m naturally cautious with new people and new dogs. Sudden movements or loud noises can startle me, and I may bark at unfamiliar visitors or large dogs at first. Sometimes I’ll even bark through the fence at a neighboring dog or when a new dog comes into the home—but once I realize everything is okay, I settle quickly. With time and patience, I’ve made wonderful progress. I now seek out attention and pets on my own, and I’m starting to really enjoy exploring, playing, and relaxing in the quiet comfort of the house. I love toys (maybe a little too much!) and one of my funniest habits is stealing toys from the other dogs just to get them to chase me. I’m fast, playful, and surprisingly silly once my confidence kicks in. I get along well with dogs of all sizes, older children, and I politely ignore cats. I’ve lived peacefully with multiple dogs and have never had a cross word with any of them. A calm home with a confident companion dog would be ideal for me—someone who can show me the ropes and help me feel secure. I’m mostly potty-trained and do great using pee pads. I have excellent house manners, am very quiet overall, and rarely bark unless other dogs start it first. I’m not crate trained, but I sleep happily on the bed and can be trusted when left alone—I’m not destructive at all. I don’t love the cold, so my leash-walking skills are still a bit of a mystery. I’m independent and not clingy. I’ll come to you when I want affection, and when I do, it’s truly special. I may never be a full-time lap dog, but I am a loyal, gentle presence who bonds deeply with those who give me time and understanding. My previous owner had to enter a nursing home, and the rescue took me in along with four of my canine friends. With patience, stability, and love, I’ll continue to grow into the wonderful companion I’m meant to be. If you’re looking for a quiet, affectionate toy-lover who will bloom at her own pace, I just might be your Marble. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Nicholas is a sweet, happy dog with a gorgeous brindle coat and a heart that is learning to trust again. He was found as a stray in Texas alongside two other small dogs, and it’s likely he’s spent a long time on the streets. Despite his past, Nicholas has a sweet demeanor and shows his love in his own quiet, heartfelt way. He does best with slow, patient introductions to new people and a home that lets him build trust at his own pace. Once he warms up, Nicholas leans into affection, showing just how loving and loyal he can be. Nicholas would thrive in a calm, understanding home that can offer him time, patience, and plenty of gentle love. He would also prefer to have another confident dog in the home so that he can model his behavior off of theirs. Nicholas is from Texas. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* This sweet boy has only been with us a short time, and he’s already showing how special he is—with so much more personality still to come. As he’s gotten more comfortable, he’s starting to show that he’s very much a “choose his person” kind of dog, forming a strong bond and happily settling in for long naps right next to you. He does show signs of separation anxiety when left alone, but leaving the TV on and allowing him to roam (rather than being crated) has helped him feel calmer and more secure. He can be nervous around new people and will retreat to his safe space at first, but in just a few days he’s made great progress, coming out on his own to say hello and ask for gentle pets. A warm heating pad is one of his favorite comforts during chilly Minnesota days. He’s still learning potty routines and has done well using a designated pee-pad area—great progress for such a short time. While he appears to have had limited socialization, he’s improving every day and will continue to blossom with patience, consistency, and a loving home. Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape.
