Simba (A499625) is an 8yo, 98lbs, grey fawn and white, presa Canario mix. Simba has been at the Prince George’s County Animal shelter since December 22nd 2025.https://24Petconnect.com/DetailsMain/PGEO/A499625I met Simba briefly when I helped him get his second shot pics taken by Happy Paws Photography. I’m kind of a sucker for a big boy with some white whiskers and Simba definitely checks all the handsome boxes! Simba was ready to go when I saw him in his kennel and pulled hard on the leash to get outside and then used the bathroom multiple times in succession, making me think he’d possibly been holding it for a while. He was definitely in need of stretching his legs and we took a full walk before his photos and Simba was intently focused on the smells on the ground and seems like he would enjoy more frequent walks than he’s currently getting at the shelter, especially while outdoors time has been limited due to cold temps and the snow storm.Simba was a little timid of the whole photoshoot setup, but the pro team at Happy Paws Photography still got an incredible shot of him. Simba will come over and cuddle with you if you sit on the ground near him, but he’s not demanding of attention or treats and has an independent spirit that seems to say, “I’m glad that you’re here so we can take a walk together but also I don’t need to be all over you every moment”. Simba was not jumpy and not mouthy at all during the time that we spent together.Simba has previously been in playgroup but did not do well in that setting so has a sign on his kennel indicating he is not a candidate for playgroup. He was introduced to another male dog by volunteers and displayed avoidance body language and no aggression with that dog. He might prefer to be the only dog in his home or be matched with a similarly respectful and tolerant canine companion after he gets a chance to decompress from his shelter stay. Don’t let her name fool you, Big Momma is a compact 60 pound snuggle bug! She loves to live the lazy life and take naps under the window in the sun, sleep in on weekends, and take more naps while watching Food Network. In between napping, she loves to play fetch, destroy toys, and go for walks around the neighborhood. She currently does well in her quiet foster home with one human and another mellow, well-socialized dog. While she doesn’t seem to understand how to play with other dogs, she loves to take naps with her resident dog sister and has started to show more signs of understanding or wanting to play. Big Momma can be hesitant around new people and can be dog selective. She has recently warmed up to strangers a bit more, though! High-energy environments can be too much for her, but she will thrive and live her best life in a quiet household. She’s crate trained and knows basic commands (sit, off, wait, on your bed) and is learning more. She’s very smart and picks up on new things quickly. Big Momma would make a great companion for someone who wants a mellow canine friend who lets them sleep in on weekends!
