Meet Penny Ruby Rose, a 7 or 8-year-old Redbone Coonhound mix, weighing 80 pounds (as of 2/4/26). This gorgeous chestnut girl was sadly given up by her owners because they sadly don't have time to care for her and don't want to leave her at home for 12+ hours a day. While Penny loves and appreciates their efforts, she's an old girl who's looking to enjoy her days with an easygoing homebody with lots of treats!
Penny is calm and quiet around the house. She's a Southern lady with exquisite manners. When it comes to toys, Penny is not impressed. This mellow girl prefers to go on walks in the great outdoors to sniff around like a detective! If you've got a large, fenced-in area and have time to go on multiple walks a day, even better! Penny's ideal owner is someone who's also enjoying their retirement years so you can both ease on through the day together.
She plays well other dogs and actually tends to prefer smaller ones over the larger ones. She'll even help babysit your kids as she loves them and will give them kisses. What a doll! Penny has experience with crates and rides great in a car if you ever need a companion to go grocery shopping. She might not be able to fit in the shopping cart though.
Penny's not a fan of loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks and will get nervous, so she hopes her future owner will have some patience with her which is fair, because those noises are scary! We'd be afraid too! While she's housebroken, Penny sometimes struggles with accidents and asks that her future family has patience to help her adjust to a new environment. She hasn't had obedience training, but knows "sit, leave it, and down" which, for this chill girl, is probably all you need.
Because of her rough beginnings being tied up (prior to being adopted), Penny's teeth are worn down. She also takes a monthly heartworm preventative medication.
This sweet and chill girl is looking for an equally sweet and chill owner! If you've got loads of time on your hands and want a loving companion (or a companion for your lonely grandparent), Penny is the girl! Adopt her today!
All dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. All dogs require professional training to become the best family member they can be.

PLEASE READ: If a dog is listed, then s/he is currently available for adoption. Their information is correct to the best of our abilities and the information we have been given as of the day of posting. Please note, GDRNE does not guarantee the breed of any dog or puppy unless stated that we have run DNA. All breeds listed are educated estimates. Our dogs are rescued from various situations. It is most likely that both their parents were strays and even if not, mixes of some sort and that their grandparents were mixes as well. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
