Story
Cash is a 2-year old male dog that was surrendered by his loving family due to an unfortunate change in their ability to continue to care for and nurture their beloved dog. Cash is about 75 pounds. He is mellow and enjoys walks and playing with other dogs. He is used to big children; and due to his size and energy; I would not recommend them to a home with small or fragile people. It is unknown how they might be with cats. He gets along fine with our 18 lb dog & other dogs. I would prefer he is adopted by someone with experience with large dogs.

Story
Meet Bluebelle the Catahoula! Bluebelle has history living with children under 12 years, teenagers, men and women. Bluebelle’s favorite activities in her previous home include running, walks and playing with other dogs. She also enjoys squeaky toys and balls. Bluebelle, like many other dogs, is afraid of fireworks. She finds car rides a little naseauting (literally, sometimes she throws up) so adopters should be mindful of how closely she eats before a car ride and/or work with their veterinarian to help provide Bluebelle with some support to make car rides more comfortable. Bluebelle knows “sit” and “shake”. She has lived with chickens previously and would chase and pin them down if she had access to them. If there are chickens in her next home, they should be securely kept separate from Bluebelle for everyone’s safety. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Are you an introvert searching for a canine kindred spirit? Meet Rose. Rose is a 5-year-old, spayed female mixed breed weighing about 45 pounds, and she is the definition of a homebody. This gentle girl thrives in calm, predictable environments. Her favorite things include peaceful walks in quiet, woodsy areas, relaxing at home, and—adorably—tucking herself into bed each night. (Yes, she grabs her blanket and does it herself. It’s as cute as it sounds.) Rose isn’t interested in busy breweries, dog parks, or loud social scenes. Those things feel overwhelming to her, and that’s okay. She’s looking for a patient, understanding adopter who will respect her shy nature and help her feel safe by keeping life low-stress and enriching it in ways she truly enjoys. In the home, Rose has been an easy and lovely house guest. She happily greets her people with full-body wiggles and often carries a toy in her mouth when they return. She appears comfortable with small dogs and may do well with a smaller canine companion, but she is fearful of larger dogs. A dog-savvy cat could also be a possibility with slow, thoughtful introductions. Rose has been waiting at the shelter since 9/30 and has unfortunately been overlooked. As the holidays approach, we’re hoping to find her the cozy, loving home she deserves. Could that home be yours? Rose`s adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to “Leave No One Behind fund” – designed to adopter’s eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelter’s care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
MEET ROMEO, a handsome, loyal, protective Black Mouth Cur. Romeo is a handsome 6-year-old male, and he weighs about 74 lbs. (His shelter paperwork says shepherd-boxer mix). Romeo is a gorgeous, handsome dog who loves to walk, hike and be with his person or people. He would be a wonderful companion for someone who loves to hike! He's a great guard dog and can be protective with people he does not know, so would do best in a non-congested area where neighbors aren't a concern. Romeo also has a prey drive, so needs a strong owner. He has done great with other dogs in a home setting. He's incredibly smart, affectionate, and will attach to his person or people. His bond is very strong. He is not a big fan of kids. Romeo is easy to groom, is playful, and loves a good belly rub! He will benefit from walks, hikes, and exercise, and people who understand his breed. Please email for an application.
