Story
applications at leiashope.org Apple Strudel Teddybear (Shih Tzu / Bichon mix) Male Location: Troy, MO Apple Strudel is a sweet, gentle boy with a joyful personality and a proud little strut to match. He absolutely loves children and thrives when he has playmates, whether that’s kids who enjoy interacting with an active puppy or a young, playful dog. He is social, affectionate, and happiest when he’s engaged with his people and included in daily life. One of his favorite pastimes is carrying around small balls, especially wool cat balls, which he proudly parades with his tail up and head held high like he’s won a prize. Strudel bonds quickly and deeply with his family. He is attentive, emotionally connected, and has a habit of gazing into your eyes with complete admiration. He does best in a home where he is not left alone for long periods and where he can be part of the family’s routine and activities. He truly wants to belong and flourishes when that need is met. Born and raised in rescue, Apple Strudel was raised with Puppy Culture, an evidence-based puppy development program focused on building confident, resilient dogs through structured socialization, problem-solving, handling exercises, and early emotional development. Puppy Culture helps puppies learn how to cope with new experiences, recover from stress, and build positive associations with the world around them. Because of this strong foundation, we highly encourage adopters to continue his education to support the progress he has already made. The recommended program is “With Open Arms and a Level Head,” available at puppyculture.com, and is an excellent investment in his long-term confidence and stability. Strudel was raised on a balanced raw diet designed to support healthy growth and a strong gut biome. He does best on raw, and attempts to transition him to other diets have resulted in constipation and an upset stomach. While a raw diet is not required, it is strongly recommended for him. Raw diets can offer benefits such as improved digestion, firmer stools, healthier skin and coat, reduced inflammation, and overall gut health, especially for dogs who show sensitivity to processed foods. If raw is not continued, the best alternative is a high-quality dog food without fillers such as grain, corn, or legumes, chosen with careful attention to ingredients and nutritional balance. Regular grooming will be required throughout his life, including professional grooming approximately every 6 weeks with consistent brushing in between. Daily eye maintenance is also required; his adopter must be comfortable gently cleaning and wiping his eyes to help manage tear staining. Apple Strudel has been seen by the veterinarian and is perfectly healthy with no concerns. He is fully weaned, microchipped, and has received all age-appropriate puppy vaccines. Rabies will be completed when he is old enough. He is not neutered due to age; a neuter contract is required, and Leia’s Hope will cover $200 toward the neuter when completed between 6–9 months of age. Adoption fee: $600 Applications are processed in 7–10 business days. An approved application is required before a meet and greet. All family members, including resident dogs, must attend, and adopters must travel to Troy, MO. We do not provide transportation. If flying home with your new pet, Apple Strudel must ride in the cabin with his family; cargo flights are not permitted. Puppies are a lifetime commitment of 15+ years. If at any point Apple Strudel cannot remain with his adopter, he must be returned to Leia’s Hope Canine Rescue. Applications and additional information can be found at leiashope.org.

Story
applications at leiashope.org-- Apple Crisp Teddybear (Shih Tzu / Bichon mix) Female Location: Decatur, IL Apple Crisp is a delightful little lady with a big personality. She is tiny, adorable, and absolutely convinced she deserves her own personal staff. If something feels even slightly beneath her, she will let you know—sometimes loudly. Noise-canceling headphones might be a wise investment. She has quickly earned her reputation as the diva of the litter, and she fully owns it. Despite her flair for dramatics, Apple Crisp is incredibly sweet and very smart. She enjoys learning, loves her people, and thrives when given gentle encouragement to work through new situations instead of being rescued from them. When supported appropriately, her confidence grows and she truly shines. She enjoys cuddling, playing with her siblings, romping with dogs of various sizes, and supervising household activity from a cozy lap whenever possible. Crisp is great with kids and loves to play, though adopters should be mindful of typical puppy behavior—including those infamous shark teeth. Thankfully, that stage is temporary, and her play will become much more comfortable as she matures. She would do best in a home with a playmate, either a young, playful dog or children who enjoy engaging with an active puppy. Apple Crisp was born in our care after her mother arrived pregnant and has been raised using Puppy Culture, an evidence-based puppy development program designed to build confident, resilient dogs. Puppy Culture focuses on early socialization, confidence building, problem solving, emotional regulation, and positive communication during critical developmental periods. Because of this strong foundation, we strongly encourage adopters to continue her education. We highly recommend investing in the Puppy Culture program “With Open Arms and a Level Head,” available at puppyculture.com, to help support her continued growth and emotional development. Apple Crisp was weaned onto a balanced raw diet to support gut health and overall well-being. While remaining on a raw diet is not required, it is preferred for optimal health. Adopters who choose a different diet should select a high-quality option and be mindful of proper nutrition. Like all Teddybears, she will require frequent brushing and routine professional grooming approximately every six weeks to keep her coat healthy and mat free. She has been examined by our veterinarian and is in excellent puppy health. Apple Crisp is microchipped and has received all age-appropriate puppy vaccines. Rabies will be required when she is old enough. She will not be spayed until she reaches the appropriate age; a spay contract is required and enforced, and Leia’s Hope covers a portion of the spay cost if completed between 6–9 months of age. Adoption fee: $600 Applications are available at leiashope.org. We are a volunteer-run rescue, and applications take 7–10 business days to process. Approved applications are required before scheduling a meet and greet. Adopters must travel to Decatur, IL to meet and adopt, and all family members, including resident dogs, must be present. Puppies are a 15+ year lifetime commitment. Apple Crisp may not be rehomed at any point and must be returned to Leia’s Hope Canine Rescue if her adopter can no longer care for her. We do not offer transport and do not allow cargo flights. ---

Story
applications at leiashope.org Located in Decatur, IL Carolina Red is a sweet little Shih Tzu weighing around 10 pounds, and her constantly wagging tail tells you everything you need to know about her happy spirit. She absolutely loves attention and is very affectionate with her foster mom. At bedtime, she prefers to sleep right next to her and will make sure to get up close—sometimes nose-to-nose—to collect a proper round of love and pets before drifting off. Carolina is great with other dogs and enjoys both quiet companionship and playful fun. She’s often found curled up beside another dog in a shared dog bed, but she also loves to play, chase, and roll around on the floor with her canine friends. She’s been good with kids and enjoys being part of a lively, loving household. She rides fairly well in the car, though she does get a bit anxious and prefers to sit in your lap for reassurance. Carolina came from a puppy mill, though you would hardly know it—until a man starts to speak, at which point she becomes anxious. We do believe this is something she can work through with time, patience, and positive experiences, but it’s important for adopters to be aware of. Carolina does not know how to walk on a leash, so a secure physical fenced yard is required. She will also need frequent brushing and professional grooming every 6 weeks to keep her coat healthy and comfortable. Carolina’s adoption fee is $400. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on vaccines. She is located in Decatur, IL. Applications can be found at leiashope.org. We are a foster-based, volunteer-run rescue. Please allow 7–10 business days for applications to be processed. An approved application is required before meet and greets. All family members must be present, and adopters must travel to Decatur to meet and adopt—no transportation is provided. Carolina is a young lady with many wonderful years ahead of her and is looking for a family ready to commit to her lifetime of love, estimated at 12+ years.
