- Prefers to explore and do his own thing here in the shelter, but will likely open up more once he's in a home environment and has had time to decompress - Seems interested in toys - Knows sit and likes treats - Young, noisy or busy children may be too much for him (mature home recommended) - May take some time to warm up to new dogs and may prefer some dogs over others or smaller groups of dog friends; would be most comfortable with a slow introduction to new dogs (dog intro recommended) All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. I'm Valentina. I was found running loose on February 13, 2026. I'm waiting to see if my people come get me. They have until the 19th. In the meantime, you are welcome to apply to adopt me. I'm a cutie and super sweet. Hopefully my owners will find me, but if not - - I'll be the love of someone's life! If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2660059##

Meet Joey!Joey is a 2-year-old Shih Tzu mix that is around 10-15 pounds at full growth. Joey came to us as an owner surrender due to him not doing well with the children in the home. Because of this, he would do best in a home where there are no children. We were told that he has done well playing with larger dogs but with smaller dogs he may can be overwhelming to them as he has a hard time understanding that others need a break. He is not fully potty trained and would need help getting on a consistent schedule for potty training, but he has done well using papers at this time. Because he is still learning to trust, a home with a fence will be required at this time. He does have a hard time trusting people coming into his space, so he would do best in a home where there are no visitors or a home that would be comfortable kenneling him when new people come over. We are still learning more about him as he is still very unsure of his new surroundings and constant new people, that he would have to have a few meets in order for him to feel comfortable being handled.If you would like to know more information or would like to be considered for Joey, please feel free to fill out an adoption application online.
