Story
Meet Pumpkin & Ginger – Bonded Shih Tzu Sisters Seeking Their Forever Home Pumpkin (black, 9 years old) and Ginger (pewter, 8 years old) are tiny but mighty senior Shih Tzu's, each weighing around 10 lbs. These inseparable sisters are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. We welcomed Pumpkin and Ginger a few months ago after their previous owners made the difficult decision to surrender them. Both girls have chronic skin and ear issues, which are common in Shih Tzu's. Thanks to the great care from our vet and foster family, they’re doing much better—but they’ll need ongoing support to stay comfortable and healthy. Their care routine includes: • Weekly medicated baths (can be done at home). Sometimes 2x a week if there is a flare-up • Regular use of topical medicated sprays/wipes • Occasional ear cleanings • Consistent grooming and haircuts • Special diet/supplements Ginger is fairly cooperative with her care, while Pumpkin has a bit more sass—but both are sweet and affectionate. They both had recent dental work, are spayed, up to date on vaccines and preventatives, and microchipped. They’re great eaters but require a special, chicken-free diet to help manage their skin from the inside out. Their meals include variations of fish-based kibble, peas, carrots, green beans, ground beef, Greek yogurt, omega oil, and probiotics—easy to prepare and not prescription-based. These ladies love (and sometimes demand) the royal treatment: lap time, naps, gentle brushing, sunbathing, short strolls, and lounging on soft beds. They’re mostly housebroken, crate-trained, travel well in the car, show no interest in the resident kitty, get along with other calm dogs, sleep well, and can be trusted alone at home. They will do best in a patient, quiet home with limited stairs, a small fenced yard (both prefer to potty off the leash), and a regular routine. Because of their size and special needs, small children and energetic dogs may not be the best fit in their new home. The cutest thing about them is that they both have an underbite and stick their tongues out. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to two loving, low-key companions who thrive on affection and routine, Pumpkin and Ginger would love to meet you. Story
Peace was born on October 12, 2023. I purchased him from a nice couple that bred and raised pup litters when he was 3 months old. He loves being around people & attention. He follows you everywhere & loyal. He's loves to eat and is food motivated. He is used to higher-quality foods. Dogs his breed and size have sensitive stomachs. He eats either Stella & Chewy or Vital Proteins brand. My family's schedule has become busier. He knows to go potty outside but is not fully trained & does have accidents. He doesn't like the rain too much, especially to potty. He can be mischievous and stubborn at times & will hold it and go inside if he's not watched. Overall, he is very sweet. Although we love Peace very much, my family would like to find another loving home for him to grow in. He is very playful and energetic. A home life with a consistent schedule, preferably with smaller children, would be best, or someone often home that can match his energy.

Story
🐾 Georgie 🐾 Shih Tzu | Neutered Male | Adult (Approx. 2–3 Years Old) Georgie is a sweet Shih Tzu who came to us from the same backyard breeding situation as Lester and Big Red. Because of his past, Georgie is more on the nervous side and takes a little longer to warm up—but once he does, his loving personality truly shines. Since coming into our care, Georgie has made great progress. While he may be shy at first, he has really come out of his shell and now enjoys affection and happily gives kisses right on your face once he feels comfortable and safe. 🩺 Medical & Vetting: • Neutered • Microchipped • Heartworm tested negative • Rabies vaccinated • Distemper (DHPP) vaccinated • Leptospirosis vaccinated • Bordetella vaccinated ✂️ Grooming Notes: Georgie showed some sensitivity around having his face groomed. With time, patience, and positive experiences, this is something he can continue to improve on. Any potential adopter should ensure their groomer is aware that Georgie may be uncomfortable with face handling and could react defensively. A big thank you to Jessica at Hair of the Dog Grooming (Louisa County, VA), who groomed Georgie and is generously offering one free groom after adoption. 🐶 Dog-to-Dog Notes: We were told by the breeder that Georgie may guard humans from other dogs and could potentially be reactive. However, we have not observed any aggressive behavior at the rescue, and Georgie has done well around other dogs in our care. As with any dog, slow and proper introductions are always recommended. 🏡 Ideal Home: Georgie would thrive in a calm, patient home that understands he needs time to build trust. Once he feels safe, he is incredibly affectionate and eager to bond with his people. 📍 Ready to apply? 👉 Apply here: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/HPAW/Dog

Story
🐾 Big Red 🐾 Shih Tzu | Neutered Male | DOB: April 5, 2024 Big Red is a sweet Shih Tzu who came to us from a backyard breeding situation and is now looking for a patient, loving forever home. Because of his background, Big Red was not well socialized early on and can be nervous at first. He is also not fully potty trained yet and will need a home willing to continue working with him using consistency and positive reinforcement. Since arriving at the rescue on December 17, 2025, Big Red has made wonderful progress and has really started to come out of his shell. When Big Red arrived, he had fleas and was heavily matted. He has since been fully treated, groomed, and is now feeling much more comfortable. He is a very sweet boy who enjoys affection once he feels safe and settled. 🩺 Medical & Vetting: • Neutered • Microchipped • Heartworm tested negative • Rabies vaccinated • Distemper (DHPP) vaccinated • Leptospirosis vaccinated • Bordetella vaccinated 🐶 Other Pets: Big Red has done well with other dogs. He has not been tested with cats or children. 🏡 Ideal Home: Big Red would do best in a calm, patient home that understands he is still learning what life in a home is like. With time, routine, and love, he will continue to build confidence and make a wonderful companion. 📍 Ready to apply? 👉 Apply here: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/HPAW/Dog

Story
Kirk may be small at just 6 pounds, but his journey has been anything but easy. This handsome, fluffy Papillon/Chihuahua mix is around 1–2 years old and is learning what it means to live a life filled with safety, affection, and choice — things he never had before.  Kirk was rescued from an extreme hoarding and breeding situation where over 140 dogs were living without proper care or socialization. Because of this, he entered foster care fearful and unsure of human touch. Trust did not come easily — but love has been changing everything. In his foster home, Kirk has begun to soften. With patience and consistency, he is discovering that laps are for cuddling, voices can be gentle, and attention can be something to enjoy rather than fear. He now seeks out affection and loves being close to his people, especially when he feels secure. Kirk is still on a confidence-building journey. He will benefit from daily walks, positive reinforcement, and a calm environment where he can continue learning at his own pace. A fenced yard would be a wonderful bonus, and a home with older children or adults who understand his sensitive nature would be ideal. He is crate trained and continuing to improve with house training. Kirk is not a finished story — he is the beginning of one. A story of resilience, healing, and a dog finally becoming who he was always meant to be. If you have the patience to earn his trust (it won't take long) and the heart to love him through his transformation, Kirk will repay you with loyalty, devotion, and the quiet joy of watching a once-frightened dog flourish.
