Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Coco is an 11 year old, male, Shih Tzu mix who acts like he is 5 years old. He weighs 15 pounds. He is energetic and playful and has a real zest for life. He was surrendered to the rescue after his owner had health issues and could no longer care for him. It appears Coco was loved and well cared for until the last year, when his owner’s health seriously declined and Coco was very neglected. Coco came into the rescue, not having not been groomed for over a year and needed veterinary care. After Coco received the care and consistency he needed, his foster parents have found that he loves to snuggle, enjoys his walks, food and toys. He is making up for the last year, experiencing the good life in his foster home after being neglected for so long. He really enjoys the company of his people, but also is okay with some alone time hanging out in his kennel. He feels secure in his kennel and goes there as his “safe” spot if the door is left open and he can go in and out as he pleases. He also prefers to sleep at night in his kennel. Coco enjoys car rides and is a great, calm traveling companion. The best home for Coco will be: - Coco is a very active dog and needs an owner who will enthusiastically engage and play with him, and can be home most of the day. Even though Coco is 11 years old, he has lots of energy and likes his walks and going outside on a daily, regular basis. This is a must for him to keep him happy and healthy. - He is accepting of another small dog in the family, but would be fine as an only dog. Coco is rather protective of his toys and food and this should be taken into consideration if another dog is in the home. - Coco’s new family will need to be patient in understanding Coco’s previous neglect situation, comfort him and help him acclimate to his new surroundings. He will need to re-learn, with his owners’ reassurance, that he can trust his owners to provide food and toys without him having to guard or protect them. - Coco would probably okay with kids that are respectful and who have had experience with small dogs. A family with children over the age of ten will be considered. - Live within 45 miles of Lakeville, MN and agree to attend the annual rescue reunion held each year in September. Coco is neutered, has had a dental, and is current on vaccinations and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $170.00 plus sales tax of $14.49 for a total of $184.49. To meet Coco, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Petco Southtown Center in Bloomington, MN.

Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Petey is an 8-year-old male Shih Tzu mix that weighs 15 pounds. He has beautiful curly black hair with a small white mark on his chest. Petey came into rescue when we were contacted by a veterinary clinic, where he was taken to be euthanized because his owners didn’t want him anymore. The vet thought Petey was a sweet boy and wouldn’t, in all good conscience, euthanize him, so the owners just gave him to the clinic. Petey had been badly neglected by his owners, was horribly matted and had no previous veterinary care. When he was evaluated by the veterinarian, Petey was found to have chronic kidney disease. He is now on a very specific prescription diet for kidney disease and is doing very well. He cannot have any other food or treats because his kidney disease will return and he will prematurely die. But if maintained on the prescription diet, he can live a long, healthy, happy life. No other medications, other than the diet, are necessary. Petey is a loving, happy guy. He follows his people and wants to be by you or at least always be able to see you. He likes to spend his evenings sitting with you. He enjoys going outside and loves a fenced in yard. Petey is pretty well house trained, and his foster parents continue to work on that by letting him out every couple hours during the day, and by having piddle pads available for him at night. He sleeps contently in his own bed at night. He gets along with his foster siblings so a small companion dog would be fine.. An adults only home would suit him perfectly, although older children (older than 12 years), who are quiet and respectful would be okay. These are the requirements for Petey’s new family: • An adult, stay at home family, although older children would be okay. • Petey does not do stairs so he needs to live in a single story home. • A fenced yard is a plus.t. He loves to explore the outdoors, but as importantly, he must be let out every 2-3 hours to urinate, and a fenced yard would facilitate that. • Petey needs a family that can willingly afford his prescription kidney disease diet, and be vigilant about feeding him ONLY the prescribed food, including treats. He must stay on this for the rest of his life in order to remain healthy. • A family within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. • Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion every year in September. Petey is neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is scheduled for a dental January 3rd at Rice Creek with a recheck of labs scheduled a month later in February, also at Rice Creek. Petey’s adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total cost of $293.02. To meet Petey, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Meet Maude, a happy, sweet Shih Tzu girl. She was found as a stray and is estimated to be 7-8 years old and weighs 12 pounds. Maude apparently lived in a home before because she is potty trained, but her new owner can expect there to be some accidents as she adjusts to a new environment. Maude loves the simple things, including time with her people, back scratches, and a warm blanket. She is very curious, especially if food is involved, and she is starting to explore more as she is getting comfortable in her foster home. Maude had some digestive issues when she came into rescue, maybe from eating whatever food she could get as a stray, or perhaps due to neglect in her previous home, and she is a bit of a picky eater. Her foster mom is working on finding a nutritious food that she likes which also agrees with her digestive system. Maude does well being left alone for short periods of time during the day and for the time being she hangs out in a puppy play pen when she is left alone. There is another Shih Tzu and cats in her foster home, but she hasn’t shown much interest in either and would do fine as an only dog or with other pets. Maude has trouble walking on slippery floors so she needs a home with carpet or area rugs to enable to her navigate the house. She can manage a few stairs, but would do best in a home with limited stairs and with someone who is capable of lifting her up and down the stairs. It seems that in Maude’s previous life that she did not go on walks, since she was was not familiar with walking on a leash. She is learning to be on a leash and is getting used to walks. But she goes wherever she chooses, which is okay, because she is now beginning to enjoy being on walks, thoroughly taking in the sights and smells of the neighborhood. She would love a family who will take her on frequent walks so that she has a chance to explore and enjoy the outdoors. These are the requirements for Maude’s new family: - An adults only home, and one who is active enough to take her on a couple long walks every day. She would do okay with older children (teenagers), but young children would be too much for her. - She would do well as an only dog or with another small respectful dog. She is not a playful dog who will interact with another dog, but will accept being with another dog. She has shown no interest in cats. - A family that is experienced with dogs and Shih Tzu care. She needs regular grooming and to have her eyes and face cleaned every day. - Maude has trouble on slippery floors and needs either a mostly carpeted home or a lot of rugs to help her navigate her home. She cannot go up and down many stairs, so her family must be able to carry her on the the stairs as well as on and off the furniture. She loves to be on the couch next to you, so this is a must! - Attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue reunion held in September each year. - Maude’s new family should live within 30 miles of the south metro area. Maude is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $270.00 plus $23.02 sales tax for a total of $293.02. To meet Maude, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph.
