At home, he’s a calm, cuddly companion who spends most of his time snuggled up, observing the world around him with quiet curiosity. Snow is his happy place—he loves playing in it, eating it, and trotting through it like a little winter explorer. Boise is shy at first, but once he opens up, his personality blossoms into something wonderfully sweet and a little bit sassy. Home is his comfort zone, and he feels safest with gentle routines and familiar people. New places, loud noises, car rides, and overwhelming environments can be very stressful for him—he tends to shut down, shake, or need quiet time to decompress afterward. He’ll need a patient adopter who understands that progress for him comes in small, meaningful steps. He enjoys seafood and chicken flavors, plush toys, and the company of similar&#226&#128&#145sized dogs. He’s good in his crate, nearly potty trained with a schedule, and knows basic commands like Sit, Come, and Go Potty. Boise is not yet leash trained and is a flight risk, so a fenced yard is essential for his safety. He’s also more comfortable with women and may take longer to warm up to men. Boise doesn’t have many teeth, so softened kibble or some wet food helps him eat comfortably. Because of his long back and short legs, ramps or limited stairs will help protect his joints. Once Boise trusts you, he becomes incredibly loyal, gentle, and loving—a reminder that even dogs who have been through hard things can still be kind, patient, and full of heart. He will thrive with someone who can offer a calm home, steady reassurance, and the time he needs to feel truly safe. In return, he’ll be the sweetest, most devoted companion you could ask for. Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. Kala is a 5 year old, 22 pound female Shih Tzu/Bichon mix. She is a gorgeous caramel color and has beautiful long eye lashes. She came into rescue because her owner moved into an apartment which didn’t allow dogs. Kala enjoys going for walks and usually walks about a mile per day. She is very friendly and respectfully greets people and other dogs while on walks. She will sometimes play fetch with a ball or tug a war with one of her toys. She does like exercise, and runs outside to chase the resident rabbits and squirrels around the yard. A secure, fenced yard would be ideal for her. Kala is very sweet, well behaved, housetrained, and knows a few commands such as “sit” and “down”. She loves being with her foster parents and other people and will sit on your lap at every opportunity. She is good around other dogs and children, and would be a wonderful family dog. A family with older children who know how to engage with a small dog will be considered. Kala does require someone be at home with her the majority of the time and who will include her in their daily activities. She rides well in the car, and likes looking out the window, so hopefully her family will take her with them when appropriate. She likes nothing better than to be with her people, and that includes sleeping with them in their bed. These are the requirements for Kala’s new family: 1. Be home much of the day and include Kala in their daily activities. 2. A fenced yard would be wonderful, but is not a deal breaker, especially if Kala will be taken on long walks every day. She must have daily exercise to be happy. 3. A family with older, respectful children will be considered. 4. Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. 5. Try to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Kala is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She has a history of urinary tract infections, which can recur, so her family must recognize the signs of an infection and have it treated immediately. Hi, my name is King, I am five years old and weigh almost seven pounds. I came into rescue from a breeder, where I unfortunately was kept indoors my entire life. So I haven’t been potty trained, or even learned about how wonderful being able to go outside and explore can be. But it’s been a bit cold, so my foster mom is helping train me on potty pads, and will go out for longer periods when the weather is a bit warmer. Because I led such a confined life, everything is new to me so I’m a little scared and nervous. I didn’t know what it was like to have a human touch me gently, but after a few days I let my foster mom pet me. Now I sit close to her and love her gentle touches. I had never walked on a leash before, but now a pro at it and am a fast learner. I enjoy other dogs and ideally I’d like a home with another dog so I have someone to play with. A home with a fenced yard would be super, but I would also be fine living in an apartment because I’m such a quiet little guy and can be somewhat of a couch potato. I’m too little to get up and down from furniture, and stairs are a new thing for me, but I’m a quick learner. Because I’m pretty shy, my new family must understand that I’ll need time to become comfortable in a new home and with new people. But with a little time I’ll be your snuggle bug, and want to be right by your side. I’ll greet you by running in circles and wagging my tail. I’ll also want to sleep with you. I spent most of my life in a kennel; it’s traumatizing for me, and I will cry or bark if you put me in a kennel. These are the requirements for my new family: 1. A quiet, adults only family who is home much of the day. 2. King is not housetrained, and his new family must be understanding and commit to his continued training. They must also understand that he has never been exposed to much of anything and will gradually introduce him to new situations and experiences. 3. Another small dog in the home would be great because King enjoys the company of another dog. 4. Agree to never put King in a kennel. 5. Live within 30 miles of Hopkins, MN. 6. Attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. King is scheduled to be neutered and have entropian surgery within the coming weeks. Once he has recovered, he will be ready to go to his new home. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative.
