Story
A504887`Bruiser`3-year-old neutered male houndBruiser was relinquished to the shelter by his previous owner and requires training to refrain from pulling on the leash, which that can be addressed with the use of a corrective training collar. Additionally, Bruiser needs guidance on spatial awareness, as he tends to be unaware of his size. Upon arrival at the shelter, Bruiser was overweight, prompting the kennel staff to implement a restricted diet. It is essential for prospective adopters to have a comprehensive understanding of the hound breed.Adoption hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00-3:30, and Saturday, 8:00-11:30. If you have another dog or children at home, meet-and-greets are mandatory.

COURTESY POST PLEASE CONTACT BARBARA at 910-538-7474 Meet Mazie — A Gentle Soul 🐾💛 Mazie’s story began with survival. Nearly four years ago, she was found wandering — thin, tired, and heartworm positive. No one knows how long she had been on her own, but what we do know is that despite everything she had been through, her spirit remained soft. With love, patience, and treatment, Mazie healed. She gained weight. She gained strength. And slowly, she learned to trust. Today, Mazie is about 6 years old, fully healthy, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccinations, including rabies, heartworm prevention, and flea & tick prevention. Her body has recovered beautifully. Now she just needs the right place for her heart to land. A Quiet, Tender Personality When Mazie first came into a home environment, she was very shy. For months, when visitors came over, she would quietly slip away and hide. She wasn’t fearful in an aggressive way — just unsure. Unsure of people. Unsure of her place. But with time — and without being pushed — she blossomed. Once she feels safe, Mazie is incredibly sweet and gentle. She has never shown aggression. If corrected, she stops immediately and moves on without holding onto it. There is something deeply soft about her — a quiet goodness that shines through. She bonds closely to her people. She doesn’t demand constant attention; she simply wants to belong. With Other Animals & Children Mazie gets along well with other dogs. She may not jump straight into play, but once bonded, she will happily interact and play with canine companions she knows and trusts. She is neutral around cats and small children — calm, observant, and not reactive. What Mazie Truly Needs Mazie is a Treeing Walker Hound — a breed built to move, track, and explore. Her instincts are strong, and her need for space is real. She thrives when she has room to roam safely and securely. She would do best in a home with a secure yard where she can stretch her legs and follow her nose without putting herself at risk. A family familiar with hounds — or one willing to understand her breed’s natural drive — would be ideal. Mazie doesn’t need perfection. She needs space. She needs patience. She needs someone who sees the beauty in a gentle, steady companion. She survived being alone once. Now she deserves stability, safety, and a place where she can finally exhale. If you have room in your home — and in your heart — for a sweet hound who will offer quiet loyalty and unconditional love, Mazie is waiting.

Story
I need to re-home my treeing walker hound, Mazie. We live on a small piece of property in Kure Beach and she needs a lot more room. Since adopting her, she has constantly escaped, despite our continued efforts. It isn't her fault, she just needs a lot more land than we have. She came to us 3.5 years ago when she was found in Columbus County, skinny and heartworm positive. We and the people who found her, treated her for heartworm and she is currently up to date on her vaccinations. She has been spayed, micro chipped and her approximate age is 6 years. She has a very sweet temperament, we have never seen her mad or aggressive. If we have to fuss at her about something, she stops and quickly gets over it. She gets along with other dogs, but will not really play with them. She does play with our other two dogs, so perhaps she has to be bonded with the other dogs. As for cats and small children, she doesn't seem to care, one way or another.

Story
Meet Zeus — short legs and a big heart 💛 At 3 years old and 55 lbs, Zeus is the perfect blend of Labrador Retriever charm and Basset Hound personality—think classic yellow Lab good looks, but on adorably shortened legs. We like to say he’s built for comfort, not speed! Zeus is incredibly sweet and loving, with a gentle soul that just wants to feel safe and adored. He can be a bit shy and timid when first meeting new people or in new environments, but give him a little time and patience, and you’ll see his affectionate, loyal personality shine through. Once he trusts you, he’s all in—quiet companionship, soft tail wags, and those soulful eyes that say everything. He would truly thrive in a home with another confident, friendly dog to show him the ropes and help him build confidence. Having a canine buddy makes him feel more secure and brings out his playful, happy side. The good news? Zeus already has all the basics down. He’s crate trained, quiet, fully vetted, and neutered—ready to settle right into his forever home. If you’re looking for a low-key, loving companion with a unique look and an even sweeter personality, Zeus might just be your perfect match. After all, even the king of the gods deserves a cozy couch and a family to call his own 🐾

Story
Hi all! My name is Texas and I am a chunky low rider! I am a really smart girl and even though I am 7 yrs old I still have alot of energy! I do like taking naps in the home I am pretty chill. I like to play with toys and keep myself amused. I am super sweet and do get along with most dogs. But I do not need to be in a home with cats or chickens since I have that prey drive thing going on! I am houestrained, I know sit, stay and wait. I love going on walks. And I love to give kisses! I need a fenced yard where I can run and I need a strong leader! I tend to want to be the alpha dog and would do best in a home with no young children. I do bark so apartments are not going to work for me. Make sure to watch my cute video!
