Story
Meet Flint and Ivan! These 1 year old BONDED brothers have faced a lot of adversity in their short lives. Their foster mom and BTKR never gave up on them, and now they’re ready to share their story…and take the next step in their journey - finding a FOREVER home TOGETHER!
They boys came to their foster home with their sister at about 7 weeks old. They were feisty little babies, hissing and spitting! It took a lot of time to earn their trust and you can still tell Ivan is hesitant with people. After a few weeks, they both got sick - little did their foster mom know how long of a journey they had ahead of them! They fought nasty upper respiratory infections, then we discovered they had a virus that was tricky to get rid of. So they battled mycoplasma, Calicivirus, and herpes virus, then finally seemed to have gotten past that.
But Flint was an interesting fella - his little immune system was very low, so he would finish a round of antibiotics and be fine for a few weeks, only to come down with more respiratory issues. One evening his foster mom noticed he wasn’t able to walk well, so she rushed him off to the emergency vet to find out he had a very high fever and was battling that stubborn virus AGAIN! In her gut his foster mom knew there was something else going on, but it took a lot of digging to figure it out.
While nursing Flint back to health and running back and forth to the vet, Ivan got very sick. He started with a very high fever and started meds, and the boys were quarantined separately while trying to get them healthy again. Ivan then presented with a swollen abdomen, and his foster mom’s heart sunk! She knew what the vet was going to find and her heart was broken - positive for FIP (Feline infectious peritonitis). Don’t google it! Everything points to fatal, BUT fostering with the most amazing rescue we were able to provide Ivan with a life-saving drug that saved him!
As Ivan started on this medication, Flint’s bloodwork showed that he also had FIP, which explained all the sickness and low immune system he has dealt with in his little lifespan. 10 days after diagnosing Ivan, Flint started on the same life-saving medication. After 84 days of FIP treatment and 84 days of observation, they have finally been cured!
These boys have been through it and their foster mom has for sure fallen in love with them through all the ups and downs! Now that you’ve read their story, we’re hoping the right people will come along and give these amazingly resilient brothers the forever home they deserve. Someone who will promise to spoil them and never let them go!
Their foster mom loves Flint’s playful personality and Ivan’s eyes! The boys’ personalities really balance each other out. Flint has adorable long wispy gray hairs all over him. He’s a little attention hog! Ivan is more nervous of people, although he will come in for pets when he feels like it. His foster mom keeps a bowl of water in the sink for him because he loves to play in it, and he’ll sometimes come and sit by the sink while she’s filling water bowls or washing dishes.
They are generally pretty chill boys, but it is very cute when they get a wild hair and zoom around the foster room! Ivan will get wild at night and have the zoomies. These boys LOVE the little toy springs AND cat tunnels! Flint also loves his feather wand. These boys will sleep anywhere! You can find them up high on the cat tree or on a comfy floor bed. Neither of them enjoy being picked up and carried around - Ivan hates it but Flint will tolerate it sometimes.
Not surprisingly, their tummies do best staying on a consistent probiotic and not switching up their food. They are currently eating canned temptations and gravy lovers - just chicken! They also get Churu treats, and they always have Purina One dry kitten food available to munch on. The vet has recommended Lysine daily to help prevent viruses, and it’s important to watch for initial signs of sickness. Flint especially will have chronic URI issues and may periodically need a short round of antibiotics, so he will be a medical adoption through Billy The Kidden Rescue. Ivan seems to be very healthy since completing his FIP meds but does have chronic runny eyes. It’s nothing to be overly concerned with but sometimes having windows open can make it worse.
Flint loves all cats! Ivan takes a little time to come around but will get used to other cats and eventually accept them as friends, so slow introductions are a must!
