Story
Meet Noodle, We spotted Noodle wandering the streets of Memphis, and this poor girl was skin and bones. She was scared and ran off, so we left her food and water and came back the next day hoping shed still be around. Lucky for us, she was curious about another dog being walked nearby, and we were finally able to get a slip lead on her and bring her to safety. No chip. No collar. No one came looking for her. But somehow, this sweet girl is still full of love. Noodle is estimated to be 1-2 years old, heartworm negative, LOVES other dogs OBSESSED with toys No accidents in the house Loves attention and being loved on Sweet, gentle, and ready for a fresh start Noodle went from surviving on the streets to learning what it feels like to be safe, loved, and spoiled. Now she just needs her forever family. Who wants to show this little noodle what a forever home feels like? —- Transport is an additional $185 A few key notes about our Rescue... 1. JUST MILO A Little Different. A Lot to Love. A Soul Worth Understanding. Meet Milo | 3-Year-Old Whippet Mix | Special Needs | Looking for His Extraordinary Someone Dear Future Family, I want to tell you about a very special little dog named Milo. But before I tell you about his challenges, his injuries, or the things that make him a special-needs adoption, I want to tell you about the Milo I know. Because underneath everything this little guy has been through is one of the most intelligent, affectionate, entertaining, and wonderfully quirky dogs I’ve ever known. And boy, does he have a personality! Milo talks. And I don’t just mean he barks. We actually have conversations. I’ll talk to him, he’ll talk back, and sometimes I swear he’s arguing with me! He has opinions about everything, including the dogs on television, and he’s more than happy to share them. His mannerisms are beyond quirky. He’s expressive, observant, funny, and incredibly smart. He pays attention to everything around him, studies the people he knows, and learns from the other dogs in our home. Sometimes I look at him and wonder what on earth is going through that busy little mind of his. And then he’ll give me one of those looks, talk back, and make me laugh all over again. This is the Milo I wish everyone could see first. A Little Dog Who Has Learned to Protect Himself We don’t know everything about Milo’s past, but we suspect he may have experienced abuse or other frightening circumstances. Whatever happened, it seems to have left him believing that he must always be prepared to protect himself. Milo’s brain operates in what I can only describe as hyperprotective mode. He is incredibly affectionate with people he knows and trusts. But sometimes, an unfamiliar movement, an unexpected approach, or even a well-intentioned gesture can be misunderstood. And when Milo misunderstands, he can react before he’s had a chance to recognize that he’s actually safe. Unfortunately, those reactions can include fear biting. I don’t believe Milo wants to hurt anyone. I believe he’s frightened and has learned to respond defensively before he fully understands what’s happening. That doesn’t make the behavior any less serious, and it absolutely requires an experienced person who understands canine fear, reactivity, body language, and safe behavior management. Milo cannot go to a home with children. He needs an adult-only household with people who have genuine experience managing dogs with fear-based biting and resource-guarding behaviors. What makes Milo so fascinating is how much he learns from familiarity. He recognizes movements, voices, routines, and tone. A gentle approach and predictable interaction make an enormous difference. He is not a dog who should be rushed, cornered, surprised, or forced into interactions. He needs people who will allow him the time and space to understand that he is safe. And when he does feel safe, the affectionate, funny, loving Milo comes shining through. His Body Has Been Through So Much, but His Spirit Never Got the Message Milo suffered a serious injury that left his back end paralyzed. Although he has recovered the ability to move and run, he has permanent physical deformities and residual nerve damage. But if you ask Milo, I’m pretty sure he’d tell you there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him! He is energetic, enthusiastic, curious, and always ready for an adventure. He loves to run, and he doesn’t seem particularly concerned that his body looks or moves a little differently. Unfortunately, his injury has left him with some challenges involving bladder and bowel control. Milo can become so distracted outside that he doesn’t take the time to urinate properly. He can retain urine and occasionally release it unexpectedly while running or playing. When this happens, he often looks genuinely bewildered, almost as if he’s wondering what just happened himself. He also occasionally passes small amounts of stool without warning, especially when he’s excited. This appears to be related to nerve damage affecting his ability to completely empty his bowels. In our home, he generally leaves a small stool overnight. These are not behaviors that deserve punishment. They’re physical challenges that require understanding and practical management. I believe a home with more structure, predictable bathroom routines, and consistent attention to his needs could greatly reduce these incidents. Our household is busy, and I recognize that we don’t always provide the level of routine that might benefit him most. His future family should nevertheless be prepared for occasional lifelong accidents. A Brilliant Little Escape Artist With a Few Strong Opinions Milo is extremely intelligent, and sometimes that intelligence gets him into trouble. If there’s a way to escape a yard, he will probably figure it out. He requires secure containment, supervision, and people who understand that his curiosity and determination should never be underestimated. Milo also has resource-guarding behaviors involving food and toys. These can occur with both people and other dogs, so careful management is essential. Interestingly, he also takes behavioral cues from one of my own dogs. He watches, observes, and follows that dog’s lead, which shows me just how capable he is of learning through familiarity and example. Whether he should live with another dog would depend entirely on the individual dog, careful introductions, and the experience of his future family. Despite his boundless energy, Milo also enjoys the comforts of home. He has never been crated while in my care. He sleeps in his own dog bed on the floor and enjoys being part of our everyday lives. He doesn’t need constant entertainment. He needs companionship, understanding, appropriate outlets for his energy, and the security of knowing what to expect. The Family Milo Needs I know Milo isn’t going to be the right dog for most households. And that’s okay. I’m not looking for most households. I’m looking for the one family who understands that some dogs come with experiences they cannot explain and physical limitations they cannot control. Milo needs: An adult-only home with no children living in or regularly visiting. Caregivers experienced with fear-based biting, resource guarding, and reactive dogs. A calm, structured environment with consistent routines and clear expectations. People who use gentle, reward-based training and respect his boundaries. Secure containment and careful supervision to prevent escapes. Thoughtful management of food, toys, and interactions with other animals. Patience and practical accommodations for his permanent physical limitations and occasional bathroom accidents. A family willing to continue appropriate veterinary care and work with qualified behavioral professionals when needed. Most importantly, he needs people who understand that his trust cannot be demanded. It must be earned. What I Hope You See When You Look at Milo I hope you see a dog who survived an injury that once left him paralyzed and somehow still approaches life with extraordinary enthusiasm. I hope you see a little guy whose mind is constantly working, observing, questioning, and trying to make sense of the world around him. I hope you see his intelligence, his affection, his ridiculous mannerisms, and the way he talks back as if he has an entire conversation planned. I hope you understand that his fear and defensive reactions are real and must be taken seriously, but they are not the entirety of who he is. And I hope you recognize that his physical challenges don’t diminish the companionship he has to offer. Milo may never be the dog who happily greets every stranger. He may always need careful introductions, predictable routines, and thoughtful management. He may occasionally leave you an unexpected little present on the floor. And he will almost certainly have something to say about the dogs on television. But I can tell you this: Milo has a remarkable capacity for affection, a personality that will keep you entertained, and a spirit that refuses to be defeated by the things he’s endured. There is something deeply special about earning the trust of a dog who has spent so much of his life believing he needed to protect himself. It’s not something you can rush. It’s something you build, one familiar voice, one gentle movement, and one safe experience at a time. And I believe Milo deserves the opportunity to experience that kind of security for the rest of his life. I’m not looking for someone who feels sorry for Milo. I’m looking for someone who sees his worth. Someone who doesn’t expect perfection. Someone who understands that loving a special-needs dog means accepting the whole dog, not just the easy parts. Someone who will laugh at his antics, enjoy his conversations, respect his fears, and appreciate the extraordinary little soul behind those expressive eyes. Milo doesn’t need to become a different dog to deserve a wonderful life. He needs the right people to help him live the best life he can. Because at the end of the day, he’s not just a dog with an injury. He’s not just a dog with behavioral challenges. He’s not just a special-needs adoption. He’s funny. He’s smart. He’s affectionate. He’s complicated. He’s resilient. He’s opinionated. And he’s wonderfully, unapologetically himself. He’s Just Milo. And somewhere out there, I believe someone is going to love him for exactly that. With love, His Foster Mom ❤️ If you would like to meet this dog, please call Teri at 630-897-7454. The adoption fee is $150. Adoption fee includes: - microchip - spay/neuter - age appropriate vaccinations: Bordetella, DH(L)PP, rabies - heartworm preventive & flea/tick preventive - deworming
