Story
Professor Nikidik aka DOC is an 8 yr old, 5 lb Affenpinscher Mix.  He came to us with an eye injury that caused glaucoma to form.  As he is blind in this eye, the best course of action is to remove it because otherwise he would need drops 4 x's a day for life to keep it from becoming painful.  Since he cannot see out of it, that seems absurd and removing it is the best option.  As of 10/1/25, we are pending a surgery date from our vet.  He will be neutered at this time as well. For now, we are only accepting applications from homes who are willing to take him as he is and provide the needed medical care at your own expense.  Once our vet is able to get him scheduled, we will then open up applications to the general public. Neutering is a requirement of adoption and will be contingent on adoption finalization.  As with his breed, he is confident and spicy!  When he loves you he LOOOVVVEESSS you but he can be choosy about who is an instant friend.  Sometimes he requires bribes in the form of treats.  He does not like being grabbed, so we do not recommend him for homes with small children.  Our best estimate is that he would do best with kids 12+ but all kids are different and we are open to discussion.  He has not bitten anyone. Housebroken is not a title he can claim 100%…yet, but he is improving day by day. He wears a belly band 100% of the time as he waits for his neutering appointment. We believe in his former home, he was using pee pads because he hated going on the grass initially. He walks on the grass now. He has no problem pooping outside if the timing is right but if we take our eye off him for a minute between him being ready and getting that leash on him, well we will find his business in another area. At least he is consistent and we know where to look. We admittedly initially gave him too much freedom to roam around. We are back on supervised house exploration.  We have tried kennel training him but he HATES it. After multiple attempts, each resulting in 4 hours of whining and barking, we gave in and stopped putting him in. His favorites place to hang out is on the top of the couch where he can keep his eye on everything.  He is  very food motivated and we are working on not begging or barking while we are eating and he is making excellent progress.   He is a cuddler on his terms. He is definitely a little shadow to his chosen person and on occasion can be vocal with a protective little growl when someone unexpectedly gets too close to them, but he has never bitten anyone. He tolerates other dogs but doesn’t really play with them. He will protest if they get too close and go find a place where he is left alone.  We are seeing a little more of his personality each day. He wants affection and is spending more and more time on our laps where he enjoys being scratched and  getting belly rubs.  Doc would do best in a home where someone is home a lot. He is definitely a constant companion type of dog and craves being in the presence of someone at all times.     GENERAL INFO:   Housebroken?: Not yet Crate Trained?: NO Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No but low shed Good with cats?: No idea Good with dogs?: Yes Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 12 Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes.  Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet.  Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service.   We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie.  We are on all social media at @umbrellaofhope and we invite you to follow us and share which helps more people see and adopt our pets.  To help our ALL VOLUNTEER team rescue more senior, special needs, medically needy and hospice animals (and a few 'typical' ones along the way, please consider making a tax-deductible (TAX ID 45-4103375) donation online at www.paypal.me/UOH or Venmo @umbrellaof-hoperescue or Zelle beourpet@gmail.com.   You can also buy tees, tanks. sweatshirts, hats and bandannas where all proceeds benefit our animals https://ruff-life-rescue-wear.myshopify.com/collections/umbrella-of-hope We also have an Etsy store where the merchandise is made by volunteers and supporters, changes regularly and 100% of the proceeds benefit our medical fund https://www.etsy.com/shop/Umbrellaofhope Amazon Wish List tinyurl.com/pineapplewish  October 4, 2025, 11:07 pm

Story
Murph was adopted when she was four months old. She is high energy and loves hard. She loves to cuddle and be around her people. She does get along with other dogs once she gets to know them. She needs more training while walking, as she pulls on her leash. She can bark while inside if she isn’t getting attention or needs to let her energy out. She responds well to a vibrating collar which we have and can provide. She is unique and has a very silly personality. She will do well somewhere where she can run around and play with her family.

Story
Meet Joy – Your Future Best Friend! Joy is a sweet, spirited 1-year-old Silky terrier mix who’s ready to fill your life with love, cuddles, and happiness. Weighing just 11.5 pounds, she’s the perfect size for snuggling on the couch or joining you on daily adventures. This adorable girl has a scruffy, black and tan coat that adds to her irresistible charm. Despite a rough start in life—her previous owner moved away and left her behind—Joy’s resilient spirit shines through. Thanks to a caring neighbor, she found her way to AFC, and now she’s eager to find a loving forever home where she can truly thrive. Joy is a bundle of affection who loves everyone she meets. She leans into hugs and snuggles, soaking up love and giving it right back. Her friendly, cheerful nature makes her an excellent candidate for therapy work—she has the potential to bring comfort and joy to many. She’s a quick learner, already using the doggie door and going potty outside on command. Joy is scheduled to be spayed and has been vaccinated, microchipped, flea-treated, and dewormed—she’s all set to become a beloved member of your family. Joy needs- A home where someone is with her most of the time, as she thrives on companionship and may cry if left alone. A home without crating, since she doesn’t do well confined. Lots of love, patience, and gentle guidance as she continues to settle in and learn her new routines. If you’re looking for a loyal, joyful pup who will fill your days with love and your heart with happiness, Joy might be the perfect match. Here is a list of things that should help us answer you in a more timely manner. 1. When you apply please always use the same email address. If we need to look something up later and you used a different email we are often not able to find it. 2. Adopt a Pet and Petfinders ask you to send us an enquiry. This always delays our response. (Why) a. Our biographies are always very detailed. Therefore sending an enquiry asking us to repeat what it says in the biography causes a lot more work and delays our response. b. We are a small non-profit and do not always have the help to answer as many enquiries as we get. c. Again our Biographies are very detailed and if you just click the link near the bottom of their bio you can fill out an application which we will respond to. 3. For the AFC website (scroll down to the bio at the bottom it says (apply to adopt today- click that link) www.animalfriendsconnect.org 4. For Petfinders ( scroll down to the biography then click the adoption link) http://animalfriendsconnect.org/adoption-application-dogs/ 5.
